Does make you ponder how good he'd be with a bit more time to work on his explosiveness and power
I could be famously wrong but Phillipou looks more like Kyle Langford than Bontempelli to me.
I see the upside and talent but I'm just not as bullish on him than others. I don't really like too many in this draft to be honest. A lot will come down to how teams develop these kids rather than picking obvious consistent talents like the last couple years where even players taken in the second round like Motlop were ready to go.
Outside of that blind turn in the highlights reel above, dead ringer for Ben Lennon.I could be famously wrong but Phillipou looks more like Kyle Langford than Bontempelli to me.

I'd prefer someone fast and good overhead/forward leader for our first pick, not a Ben Lennon all Aus. junior that played a 40 odd game AFL career type.Outside of that blind turn in the highlights reel above, dead ringer for Ben Lennon.
2013 Draft Profile: Ben Lennon
Ben Lennon (Northern Knights) Height: 187 cm Weight: 79 kg Position: Utility Player comparison: Jamie Elliott Strengths: Overhead marking, strength, positioning Weaknesses: Athletic ability Ben Lennon is a unique prospect who has often been forgotten when discussing the top picks in the 2013...central.rookieme.com
Good overhead, good height, dynamic.
I've said this before, but I really don't like hybrids; smalls who play tall, rely on marks to kick goals. We've already got marking targets inside 50. What I'd like is either players breaking clear of a stoppage outside 50 receiving the ball and going bang on the run from 45, or crumbers that can be front and centre to harass the exit or snap the goal themselves.
We need to add an element of speed on the ball, give opposition reason to doubt whether they should stay with Curnow/Harry to run at the ball carrier to prevent the shot. At present, teams can play a goalkeeper-like role behind the ball and hold someone in the hotspot or a leading avenue, and it functions both as extra number and offensive pivot.
Run the ball in from 60, and that player is irrelevant and we're harder to shut down.
Nowhere near his “entire footy craft”. Hate the one or two minute highlight reels, particularly ones like this which only focus on the glory of goal kicking. The boy is a complete midfielder with excellent forward craft. Good disposal, two way running, effective overhead as well as on the deck and a great athletic profile.I don't know if these highlights reveal his entire footy-craft, Phillipou looks strong overhead, but shows little explosiveness or fast leading patterns.
Would this be exposed by quality AFL defenders?
I provided the basis for that in that post.I'm confused. Did Ben Lennon fail to cement an AFL career because he was a "hybrid" or because he was 'Ben Lennon'. Forgive me for thinking it was the latter. It's the same for every AFL footballer who doesn't make it.
How do you view his speed and agility? I note he ran sub 3 seconds at the combine and remember some highlights early in the season of him bursting out of packs. If he uses his speed in game and has high-level agility to go with his endurance running, ball winning ability and forward craft - it's adds up to an exciting package.Nowhere near his “entire footy craft”. Phillipou is ultimately a mid first who has traits in the ilk of Bont or a better kicking Fyfe. He can go forward and possibly could become a focal point, but will be a midfielder with maturity. Has the bonus of having a secondary role which should get him early games.
Everyone also needs to be aware that he has a late December birthday and is likely to be the youngest draftee. His upside is enormous. If he is available at our pick, we absolutely must take him in my opinion. Arr0w has advised privately and on these pages that he is a flight risk. I do not suggest fabrication, but I read the vast majority of material on impending drafts and have not seen it elsewhere. I like to think that in any upcoming Carlton draftee’s initial contract we will be seriously contending for a flag. We have some good SA connected youngsters in Durdin and Motlop on the list for support as well. I am not concerned by any go home conjecture.
I am very high on Hollands and suspect young Hewett was not at his best during the carnival with injury and a Covid “hangover” so would support his acquisition, but Phillipou is “the dream”. He may go higher, but plenty are hyped and no SA teams pick before us so there is a chance(I hope). If indeed there is a “go home” suggestion, it would absolutely deter the northern teams more than VIC teams. Jackson and Kelly are pretty much outliers wanting to move from contending teams, I would backup in, and if he does go home expect a high first rounder or more back in return down the track.
I get people quickly adopt or dismiss draftees on a whim, I like to think I am impartial, but certainly concede like others, I can latch on to a player just as others can. It is the posters who like to then set about affirming or “potting” them based on minimal real knowledge who annoy me. Highlights packages are a tool which can display ability or potential. I watched every U18 championship game. Some multiple times. The Foxtel broadcast games (read VIC games) are available. The earlier games were streamed, but are poor quality productions and not an easy watch. They do however give us an insight in to the non Victorian prospects. The very first game showed two standouts early Phillipou who had some press and exposure and less publicised team mate, forward/ruck Phoenix Foster (played “out of position” ahead of some hyped key position types and was (almost) dominant against some highly rated opposition).
Crazy to think there’ll be 9 more dangersfield in betweenI'd prefer someone fast and good overhead/forward leader for our first pick, not a Ben Lennon all Aus. junior that played a 40 odd game AFL career type.
But most seem to rate Phillipou, and if he became Dangerfield 11. than you'd be mad to go past him.
And MP is already 5cm taller!Outside of that blind turn in the highlights reel above, dead ringer for Ben Lennon.

Dec 27th birthday - born 5 days later and he would be in next year's cohort. You answered your own question. Again remember, youngest on the draft (to my knowledge)
Yup, misses next years cohort by just 5 days. Huge upside to Matteas really don’t think he’ll drop slip passed top 5 or 6 picks. You answered your own question. Again remember, youngest on the draft (to my knowledge)
Think this game showed the best of Busslinger. Later in the season he was hampered by the shoulder he ended up having surgery on and didn't look as assured in the air.
The commentary on wanting a key defender is interesting.
Wonder if it’s just Fox Footy putting 2 and 2 together or a genuine chance of happening?
If we trade up or add an early second rounder I could see us balancing out our list needs with Busslinger at 10 and grabbing someone like Konstanty at whichever pick we manage to bring in.
Konstanty looks like a beauty, Mot's and him could be a dangerous combo. The commentary on wanting a key defender is interesting.

I suspect that is going to be the case anyway.Wonder if it might be a case of leaking some misinformation and hoping to spook WC into taking Busslinger early?
That would be an astute move and definitely Busslinger , agree to trading up a few levels to secure him, but not involving our fwd 1st rounder, next years top 12 /15 youngster are very good indeed, Delian, Curtin, Stevens, Reid, Sanchez Dursma quality youngsters. The commentary on wanting a key defender is interesting.

Bit of Matty Lappin in the way he launches at the ball - doesn’t seem express quick but he’s good at getting aerial separation.Konstanty looks like a beauty, Mot's and him could be a dangerous combo.

Busslinger at 8, then Hewett at 12 if not Ginbey.
Perhaps Hayes is actually the one we’re wanting another club to take?
