I'd imagine the only reason any club would leak their draft preferences this early would be to try and create a 'red herring' on draft night.
I hope that's what 'New Carlton' would do. 'Old Carlton' would leak it because magical thinking dictates that it's worth boasting about. "We've already worked out we have the best player at pick 49, you suckers!"

Foxsports has us taking either buss or hayes so who do we believe no one

Strangely those are the two other names I've heard linked to us. There's someone else as well but I have no clue as to whom.

Now that the Hollands news is public I'll be open and claim that I pm'd a couple of posters here yesterday (our key draft watchers) that a little birdie that lives closer to me (I'm in Brisbane) that Hollands apparently nailed his interview with Carlton and that he left with the impression that we were as keen for him as he was for us (didn't know the connection until it was published, just know Elijah and that his Dad played for Richmond).

Until it was public news I didn't want to post here in case it was sensitive information on our end. Now that's out the window I'll share that info

Might be silly - I generally believe clubs have a fair understanding of which way other clubs are going ahead of the draft and know who they need to get in front of (look no further than Austin's drafting of Durdin) to get their players.
.
However, I wouldn't be shocked if the club had half a dozen names in mind right now for 10 and that the player we do draft hasn't been spoken about just yet. Still time for the draft to shake out differently.

This is true but it serves no purpose to let it out and does not magically make the decisions more potent because of your confidence. It just brings home the fact that other clubs have already made 'X' amount of selections before you get the chance to get 'your man'.

l would be highly surprised if we had indicated to any player eg Hollands that we would take him, way too early and our choice to a large extent is going to be controlled what other clubs decisions.
Right now up to 6 players you would think would be in the mix.

I hope people haven't taken it as that.

What I took out of it?

Carlton has spoken to him. It went well.

That is it.

I'm sure we'll speak to most kids in the draft pool. Some more highly rated than others (round/selection dependent).

I just found it coincidental - nothing more or less - that this was published within the same 48 or so hour period.

Sounds like Hollands is on our radar, but you can't deduct much from a good interview. It's only one part of the equation, and naturally in the moment a player and club can feel good about the way things panned out. We know he can play at a reasonable level, it's a bonus he's a good kid who also happens to support the club - those are all great things.

That being said I had a mate who was drafted a while ago and he was convinced he was going to Freo. They had 2 or 3 selections in his range and they spoke to him a couple of times leading up to the draft. On draft night they passed over him at each pick and he went a bit later to St Kilda.

On the other end of the spectrum my cousin was good friends with Alex Brown (went like Pick 80 odd to the Swans) and he thought he interviewed badly with Sydney and especially thought Longmire wasn't interested in the slightest.

If other clubs think we're set on Hollands that can sometimes lay the ground for him to be taken earlier (social proof) or allow them to cast their eyes elsewhere and re-evaluate their order.

He's definitely not my first preference, but I can see reasons for taking him. Funnily enough his brother is the exact type of player we'd love to add to our list. I wonder if that is also factoring into our thinking?

NB - I just watched 6 minutes worth of junior highlights for Elijah Hollands thinking this bloke looks better than I remember, before realising my mistake.

Just an armchair expert here…

But, this is what I’m afraid of.
Some kids are further developed than other kids - in size or fitness.

Where will they be 3+ years from now, when they are all going to be in a professional environment? Kids can put on muscle & fitness, but there core skills can only be refined.

We need players with innate good skills, pace and huge upside - for all our picks, particularly as high as #10

I'm another who sits in the armchair just reading when it comes to this thread. No idea about any of the kids except what I consume here.

In regard to the bolded above, maybe we have been burnt a bit by the likes of Stocker and Dow? It is assumed most AFL standard draftees can reach the necessary level of aerobic fitness, but the reality is it is getting harder all the time.

I'm quite happy if we pick a bloke who knows how and where to run and can find the ball. We don't have an abundance of that type.

Don't worry too much about Hollands. From all accounts he is very driven. His skills are pretty good now and will only get better.

Just think of someone with Sam Walsh's running ability with excellent leadership skills and driven to get the best out of himself.

Personally think that gold coast might take him before we get the chance but he looks like a 200 gamer to me.

Actually wouldn't be the worst pick for GC.

Brother already up there, less connection to Melbourne, given their poor retention they really just want to take bring in any talented prospect who is likely to stick around.

This is also why I'm optimistic some really good players are going to slip through to our pick and potentially beyond.

Or we could take him and his brother haha

I might be harsher on Hollands than most, but at this stage I see him as lacking in some areas and not confident he can rectify them to warrant an early pick

Strengths:

Can find the ball with easy, great competitor, massive tank, works hard defensively

Weaknesses:

Not overly clean by hand or foot, delayed in disposing, seems rushed, which hampers movement and or team exits, lacks scoreboard impact, lacks burst, not strong overhead.

At this stage, I see him more an inside type, where we have ample options, but given his tank he may transition to being a solid wingman if he cleans up his decision making and disposal by foot

If I am taking a non tall here, I want more composure, better footskills and someone that can rest forward and be a threat

Not overly clean by foot?

I would have thought he is one of the better kicks in the draft.

crippa was still there at 11, I recall..........
Interesting draft 2013 in hindsight.

Tigers thought that Ben Lennon was better than Cripps allowing us to get him at 13. Blake Acres went at 19. We traded pick 32 (which we got for Sean Hampson) to Sydney which got us Andrejs Everitt. Swans used that pick on George Hewett. We traded pick 33 to the Lions for Sam Docherty.

nice context putting in of!

Whoever we get I want a big bodied footballer. Enough smaller sized players ffs

Geelong showed that big bodies win footy, as did the only team to defeat my team this year..

Gimme big strong bodied footballers.
