Women's Footy 2022 AFLW Season Discussion (now Player Movement)

A big difference in pouring money into Suns and GWS which resulted in a much bigger media revenue deal
So pretty much paying for itself not to mention growing the game for the future

However when you get a big line of credit and use most of it to keep the game afloat that debt does not indirectly pay for itself
It has to be repaid. How the AFL do that is sort of mentioned in the above article. So less to clubs & more to banks to repay debt but no timeframe
We still have 2022 to get through yet, and if things go sideways they may have to borrow more from that line of credit

Personally i thing this AFL year will right itself by March but i could be wrong

Women's game is a growth market too and as people here know the numbers of women & girls playing the game have grown massively since the start of the women's league, especially in Qld.

Yes it’s a growth market, but it’s not even earning enough money to pay for itself at the moment. Not even close.

What's not sustainable? The AFL already pour massive cash into the likes of the suns and they don't seem to want to put an end to that. Your arguments do not convince me that the AFL can't put more cash into the AFLW.

Wasn't it a $500m overdraft? Some of that can definitely go the AFLW's way.

The men don't have to sacrifice coin because the AFL has plenty of cash. Why they won't just give the women's league a financial boost is beyond me.
I did not say the AFLW game isn't a growth area
Among other things you were also talking about debt
briztoon replies pointing out the overdraft and pouring more from the overdraft for AFLW is "not sustainable" and a link to an AFL article on how that debt may get repaid
I was pointing out the big difference between Suns & GWS coming into the AFL at different periods of time
You were stating the AFL has plenty of cash. Like any business you need cash & cashflow to run that business so yes they had/have a fair bit of cash
However not enough to cover what was predicted to follow during Covid 19 outbreaks
So they took out a line of credit for around $600 million of which they used a large chunk
This has to be repaid

I don't really want to go back and check the AFL Annual Reports in the years the Suns and then GWS came into the competition
However as each team came into the comp new media deals would/will have been negotiated
This would have resulted in cash from the AFL going out from their reserves and monies coming in via media deals
Resulting in possibly some debt but easily manageable and repaid swiftly. Same when GWS came on board
Same could be said about the AFLW. But an unknown market so the media rights were given for free. So only cash going out
I believe the AFL now receive some monies from the media deal but i doubt it is that much. More like a token amount till the next deal comes around
briztoon is also correct in that the AFLW is not close to paying for itself.
Hopefully in the future it will be. But i see AFLW for now as bringing more families on board to get involved in game of AFL

Do the ladies deserve more money. The answer to that is yes
However the AFLW is still trying to find it's way
I think it is still about 10 years away from ALL players getting a sufficient wage to classify it as a full time job
They got an increase this year and i believe the AFL will continue to pay the ladies more money over time

Up until this year i have attended all AFLW games with my daughter that were held in Queensland. So not a hater of AFLW

I hope you are correct about March but the WA premier has thrown a curve ball with the continuation of the border restrictions. I hope it is only the early part of the AFL season that is affected. But you would have to think West Coast Eagles players will resist moving (even short term) to one of the eastern states, if WA borders are still closed come the start of the season.

Unfortunately for the AFLW they are trying to build a brand that will be attractive to sponsors and to spectators during COVID. I would like to see in a few years the AFLW players be paid at least similar to the Super netball players. I believe that is realistic and will hopefully lead to a better product and eventually a semi professional/professional league, playing curtain raisers before the AFL games.

Interestingly the QRL is paying its female state of origin league players the same as the men this year around $50K for the 3 matches. When you consider that the women play at Nth Sydney oval and Kawana Oval and attract crowds of around 10K, the men consistently attract crowds of of 50K at Suncorp, 80,000 in Sydney and sell games interstate eg MCG, Optus, and well as TV audiences over a million viewers, this is an interesting development by the QRL.
Just found this article dated 16-01-2022 that people may find interesting regarding Australian sportswomen wage

I like that you added that last bit right at the end 😁

Not that I said you were......

That last bit "So not a hater of AFLW" was not directed at you. So apologies if you took it that way

People on this forum from previous years could come to that conclusion regarding my opinion on paid entry to AFLW games
Just for the record i am still against paid entry to AFLW games at this time. Even though i have paid for it via my membership
The only thing i have changed my mind on is the grand final and possibly the other finals games.

No Sophie Conway? Must be caught up in the COVID protocols.:think:
Confirmed
BRISBANE will turn to debutant pair Zimmie Farquharson and Ruby Svarc to help cover for stars Kate Lutkins, Dakota Davidson and Sophie Conway.

The Lions have not played since losing both players to an ACL and foot injury respectively in round one, sitting out round two due to AFL health and safety protocols.

Winger Conway is the sole player from the round one side to still be missing under those protocols, with Svarc, sister of Cathy, set to slot into her position.

4 day turnaround should make Saturdays game interesting, would have almost no doubts of beating the cats if we had a 6-7 day rest between games. Didn't look tired and the girls ran harder in the 4th so that's an encouraging sign.

A bit more detailed stats for those interested
Interestingly so far wherever i look all the stats are listed only in player number order
I am sure this particular site was put together from someone that posts on Lions bigfooty

I like our chances of beating the cats. "Anytime, Anywhere" is our unofficial motto for a reason.

Mildly awkward to say the least for both the AFLW & the Giants.

We have a ground breaking role model player, who is boycotting the round due to the pride jumper.

The article states that her team mates are understanding. Well, I guess that article has to say that, but I'm sure that's not quite the truth.
