Kent having 4 touches and one tackle
Max kicking 1goal 3 had more to do with the loss then the umpires
Don't talk to me about Kent. Never been a fan and would be happy to see the back of him.
Max was disappointing considering his kicking improved so drastically back end of last season.

Friday night was a shocking loss for the club had the spot light on them and given the time spot we wanted.

Was it as bad as the north loss not in your opinion but we all have different opinions but apparently it’s hysterical to think other wise, same poster had a crack at StC from WA the other day which was just another cheap shot, if gringo ,St C or I reply to people like that @Geaorge would be telling us to pull our heads in and fair enough

Surely we can discuss the good and bad of the club without people taking offence on views either way

From an overall where we are as a club perspective, Friday's loss was as bad as I have seen from the club. Not in performance, have seen worse, but if they wanted to displace and preconceived perceptions of list and chances of a decent season, they certainly didn't. In fact they reinforced the prevailing view that we are the new Ninthmond, just a MoR team with the occasional winning season.

Didn't even have the energy or enthusiasm for the club to get angry on Friday night, just thought, meh, what else is on TV?

Surely it's only a matter of time before Higgins kicks a massive bag.
After the bye when we are 4-7 and we steam home to win 8 from 11 games and only just missing finals, papering over the cracks, getting Ratts another 3 year contract and us a middling late top 10 ten pick that is pushed out to 12 or 13 by academy, F/S and compo picks, and we will waste on a HBF'er with 'potential' ;)

Don't forget to add that we beat a top four side against all odds in round 21 to keep us in the finals race only to lose to an injury ravaged bottom 4 side the next week to dash our hopes and dreams yet again. The dead rubber in round 23 sees us comfortably win to go into the off season with optimism for season 2023.

Can't tell me that bevo is not a dad type to his players. He's a bit weird with stuff outside the game and team but he's absolutely a cuddle type of coach not a task master. Not really any of the old taskmaster coaches around anymore

He reminds me more of the nuts uncle that you used to like talking to growing up because he was wild.

Made you laugh. Feel empowered etc.

The thing that hurt most was the lack of effort and energy. I felt like we were going to lose from 10 minutes into the first quarter. You can tell when they don't give a shit. Even when we came back you felt like luck was going to have to intervene get us over the line.

Pretty much like the North Melbourne marquee game. They gave no effort or pride in their performance. I'd rather go down in flames trying our arses off than have to watch 18 players getting paid to jog around half interested.

I expect them to play better this week because it's hidden from view.
We'd run 11ks more than Collingwood as a team at half time. I'd say structure, cohesion and voice were the bigger issues.

I just don't thin there is a correlatoin either way. The reality is. A persona of the field is not indicative of the persona on the field and even so one is not necessarily better then the other. Lastly I don't think we ever had a policy of avoiding those types of players.

The arguement is just so flawed on so many levels. Sam Walsh is another example
Agree with this. Barry hall a good example. Gentle as a lamb off the park

King + Higgins kicked 1.7 between them. In fact even including Members it was 4.9. Not too many hard shots in those, could easily have been 9.4 and then we win easily. Disappointing that those guys converted poorly.

Throw in Higgins' infamous pass to Butler which he really should have converted into a simple goal, and he could have had 5. As I've said, he is going to kick a bag sooner or later. Just gets himself into so many opportunities in front of goal.

My dad said he's got to the point where watching us makes him angry and he's finally got to the point where he thinks he's got better things to do with the rest of his life. This loss has most of my Saints mates really disillusioned. I don't know why but this one hurt. Maybe because we were all hoping that this might be our Melbourne year and that little bit of hope has been taken away, we are pretty much starting 2022 like we started last year.

Yep exhausting
Given a home Friday night game full house and do that again
It's the effort that gets you.
I leave work, drive to some other station because of trackwork, get the train, go to the game then head home at close to midnight. All for what? One of St Kilda's greatest hits.

The hysteria from this loss is getting to ridiculous levels.
I think people are sick of going nowhere while watching everyone else fly past us. Melbourne did it, Western Bulldogs did it, Richmond did it and if the first two games are anything Carlton will do it.

Nah, my brother and lots of cousins, brother in law etc but my old man is a Sainter.

Except we started last year with a great win.

We expected them to come out fired up, or at least I was hoping that this year we'd be breathing fire with something to prove....instead we looked lethargic and disinterested. We rallied for a quarter and then got tired again. Oh well next year.

You attach too much importance to one game. It's like we should just give up because we lost round one.

We has a great win in round one last year. In 2020 we had a shocking loss.

Let's see what happens. The fact is we don't know what will.

We shouldn't give up but we should be disgusted by the lack of effort. They have been thrown a gift from the footy gods playing a massively depleted Freo off-broadway over there. They have a chance of redemption and I'll be the first to get carried away if they do. The club has exhausted a lot of fan's patience and need to turn it around. Lose the first two games and it becomes historically very unlikely that we play finals.

We just want to see progress. So far it seems like we're e either learnt nothing from our failures last year or are powerless to stop it. I don't even care if we win, if we get lucky or fall across the line against a pathetic opposition I won't believe. I want to see a plan in action.

I agree with this. The loss last week sapped away a lot of my optimism.

We were rubbish for two and a half quarters, flicked the switch and turned it on, hit the front, then retreated again before a late surge.

Our ball movement was as slow as treacle. We didn’t seem to work back hard enough like Collingwood did. And there didn’t seem to be a game plan that was positive and readily identifiable. Maybe I’m missing something.

We show what we can do in bursts, which was far better than what Collingwood produced. But we reverted back to mediocrity and lost the game. That’s what frustrates me to point of going ga-ga.

I just don’t think we are well coached and haven’t been for over a decade. If things don’t improve then I hope to god we don’t persist with an underachieving coach like we did with Richardson. I’m sick of us rewarding mediocrity with contract extensions.

And we need to develop a few more younger players from the National draft. It’s something we have been poor at for a decade now. Not sure why, yet we do amazingly well with minor drafts or speculative selections used to top-up the list (eg. Wilkie, Sharman and Hayes).

The reason we don't defend well is due to our ball movement. Watch next time we transition the ball from back to front.

If it's not a fast break, we push numbers forward to provide options and get numbers to the ball, but all it does is congest space in front and limits leading lanes for forwards to present to the ball, resulting in stagnant ball movement.

The flip side to this is by moving numbers forward of the ball, we leave our defense exposed on the turnover, which is why fast break teams have such an easy time scoring against us. Our midfield is all ahead of the ball, and unless we can scrap for a stoppage, we don't have enough time to work back to help our defenders.

The alternative approach (which most successful teams use) is overlap run, counter attacking from the back half in waves, which stems from working with numbers BEHIND the ball. Rewarding the lead up forward but then having the next wave move past him for the quick hands and so on.

You can see how this approach is supported defensively as numbers are already behind the ball, and workrate back in defense is seen not only as the imperative from a defensive perspective, but also translates to offensive play also.

This has been my biggest concern with our game plan. Even in 2020, blind Freddy could see our rebound and run and carry from defense was dreadful, and it's no wonder we have looked to Hill and Sinclair since to try and rectify this (should have been Hind!).

We have zero forward nous built in to our game plan. When was the last time you saw space created in F50 to lead into through dummy leads? Or teammates blocking for one another to create separation and a mismatch? Or heaven forbid only one player flying for the mark?

It's because we move numbers forward more often then not, and because of this, don't have options presenting to the ball, so the only option we have is to kick long and hope.

This is what frustrated me so much about Round 1. We have been seeing this for close to 6 years. Not only our entire game plan needs to be reconsidered, but our general philosophy and principles need to be reviewed AFAIC.

(the above relates to ball movement when in possession / defense when not in posession, and not around stoppage work, of which has generally been our bread and butter over the past 3 years when we have looked good)

Excellent tactical analysis.

Perhaps they have pretentions of Gegenpressing, but without the technicians to get it through midfield (not withstanding it's a totally different sport). They saw Hill as our Alexander Arnold, Howard as our Allison, King as our Firmino, etc.

Gegenpressing only works if the whole team works together in tight synchronisation, you saw what happened to Liverpool last season once they lost key personnel and replaced them with less drilled components; teams defended like crazy then opened them up easily to nick a goal. That frustrating period of Liverpool getting done time and time again, that's what we are looking at right now.

Someone on SEN was talking about Carlton and their pressure and defence. Pointed out the way they pressure the ball carrier but always cover the receiver as well which stops the Dogs getting their weapon going. That's the opposite to us where we all run at the carrier like an under 9. It was very noticeable in the Pies match.
