FWIW I like Barnett as a 25-30 selection, if it means giving up a single second rounder (preferably ours but I don’t really care in the scheme of things), I’m all for it

I like Verrall a lot too, I’m more in the camp that Verrall is underrated rather than Barnett is overrated. They’re pretty close I reckon, with Barnett a bit ahead
FWIW ....IMO Barnett has better hands ...true one grab, and aggressively attacks the ball in the air

Verrall dominates U18 level, due to his height .....not sure how that'll translate at a higher level against big bodied Rucks ......IMO seems to be beating up on kids currently .....sorry Jeffcrowe ;)

Agree that Barnett in the air is very strong. It’s why you see him able to clunk marks around the ground on a pretty regular basis

Re: Verrall’s height, though - I believe he’s only 199cm, barely a tall ruck

From the games I saw Verrall was able to go forward and pluck marks and look a natural forward inc the champs game against WA

Verrall is only 199cm vs Barnett 202cm which is a bit of a negative for Verrall although Verrall has the better vertical leap at centre bounce , this was also proven at combine testing

It’s a good debate but I’m just trying to temper expectations re Barnett … won’t be unhappy to have him at the right price but he’s not a special player or anything ( at this stage )

It'll be interesting where Verrall & Barnett go respectively in the Draft .....post draft, it's all about how these guys develop in Club environments

I like Barnett, he has good athleticism and a nice height but i cant see the Crows picking him.
It would be a massive change of tactics for us to get a ruckman before the rookie draft
Lets hope we put a bit more value on a developing ruckman than we have in the past
I reckon we are into him , which I’m ok with at right price

Will take some time to develop but that’s ok

Yep good summary

I’ll go with Barnett pick 30-40

Verall similar range , maybe some question marks on his height and 2km time trial at combine might hinder him

Extra 2 picks? Isn’t only 1 after Max?
Two list spots that can either be senior or rookie list

I suspect we’ll trade back into the main draft for one selection (whether it be early or late), then take one new rookie

I think Turner might come back on the list for Seed as an SSP

I reckon they're not entirely sure themselves which way the draft will go, and whether or not they're better moving back in to the main draft or staying in the rookie.

There's no massive advantages for us this year in keeping full rookie numbers - the advantage is the discount against your salary cap, but we would be struggling to fill the salary cap anyway.

It has made the draft suddenly more interesting.

10 Gollant
11 Hamill
12 Hately
13 Himmelberg
14 Hinge
15 Jones
16 Keays

How tall is Luke Jackson, how tall is Paddy Ryder?

It's more about the leap, reach and athleticism.

Of course Barnett goes way earlier than Verrall mostly because he's been more high profile and had more exposure especially given Verrall was dealing with osteo pubis during the preseason and the early part of the season. Really only got going at full rat power mid season before forcing himself into the last Nationals game where he played mostly forward (2 goals) and in his limited time on ball was SA's most competitive ruck in that game.

It was a reply to Wayne’s comment re: how his ‘height advantage’ allowed him to beat up on smaller opponents. Just highlighting that he didn’t have a height advantage at all

Clubs aren’t silly and will also have thoughts about that

Interestingly Barnett isn’t in Cal Twomeys latest top 30 after being in teens or early 20s in the prev ones ( a quick scan of some other mock lists still have him in 18-23 range )

Wouldn’t completely surprise to see Verrall taken in similar range to Barnett on the second night

Agree, can see him being a ‘bolter’ from a public perspective

Kinda amazing to see how much Sculley, Lemmey, Keeler, Verrall and, to a lesser extent, Barnett have slid down the pre-draft rankings. 12 months ago you would hardly believe it.
SA has gone absolutely backwards in the last 15 years from a sports development perspective.

We barely have a competitive state cricket team, and we wouldn't have a competitive state of origin AFL side.

I have no idea how that can be addressed.

Our cricket team hasn't been competitive for 30 years, it's not just the last 15.

Our U18 team won the nationals only a few years ago. We don't have the population of Vic or NSW, so we are always going to be up against it year on year.

Not in soccer we haven't.

Agreed. Also Netball, Basketball - both men & women (2017-18 partly excepted for men), Adelaide United, Baseball, Hockey - men & women, Ice Hockey, anything cricket ….. we are meh at best, shite at worst.

Can’t remember the last Adelaide team to win anything significant other than the Crows Women … The Reds in 2015-16?

We used to like to think that we regularly punched above our weight in national team sporting competitions …. not any more.

If you look at the AFL players coming out of SA over the last 20 years and compare it to the previous 20 (or 30, or whatever), you can see that our talent production has absolutely fallen off a cliff.

It really needs attention.

Strikers have won big bash at least once recently
