He'd played both forward and midfield in his under age year and even in his limited games in his top age year and looked OK at both moreso on his under age year.

I think most saw him more as a forward though especially with the concerns over his lack of endurance which might still be an issue?
But he hasn’t turned out to be a good pick has he? Other clubs steered clear and we took him. Another one to add the Hamish’s list of dud first rounders

Hang on you said he drifted because he was injured and clubs didn’t know if he was a forward or mid, so either we had some special psychic abilities and knew or we guessed. Given his form as a KPF has mostly sucked, we got the pick wrong either way.
No, I said they weren't certain whether he would developed into KPF or midfield but he played in both those position U18. His first year showed he could played as the 2nd KPF.

Maybe so but we were always taking him if he got through to us that I have no doubt on.

My hope from a long way out was always Hunter Clark getting through to us at our pick but when the Stingrays switched him to full time midfielder after the Nationals and he blitzed the TAC Cup that became increasingly unlikely.

You clearly don't know how draft works, read more to gain more basic football knowledge is my advice to you Elite Crow. You didn't do that under your previous alias account and not doing it now. Very disappointing.
Listen Mickey, when a highly rated junior slides, it means clubs overlooked him, we now know with good reason. We picked him and it hasn’t worked out. So who are the smart ones? Us or them? Use your basic knowledge to work that out

Like I said Mousey, he was proven to be a 1st rounder KPF in his 1st year wasn't he? Statistically, last year he was quite good and that's an interesting statistic for 2022.

With Fog, you can at least understand why he was taken early. There is something there, some elite football traits, but just hasn't gone as we hoped. McAsey and Gallucci were genuine headscratchers at the time however and time has not changed that.
Why was Gallucci a head scratcher?
Went around where he was expected to go in the draft, had played outstanding footy in the TAC Cup for Eastern Ranges in multiple roles midfield/half forward/half back and for Vic Metro at the Nationals, captained the Eastern Ranges and Co-Captained Vic Metro, 2 year member of the AFL Academy. Outstanding athletic profile and absolutely lit up the AFL draft combine.

Imagine Curnow with our development and fitness programs at that time ? He'd have needed his legs amputated because we wouldnt have put him in for surgeries.

And id still take Thilthorpe over Logan Mc now and likely at any stage in the future. Of the 4 single digit picks, 3 of them are in our best 22 players.

Anyways..... Tom Browne (LOL) thinks GWS are likely to lose one of Taranto or Hopper, surely we can get in on that ??
Hopper please.

Do you think teams put as much time and effort into scouting players not available to them?

Do you think they should?
Interesting question, but I think it depends on the hype around the player.

Daicos was considered a top 5 lock a year out, and collingwood would never let him go. So for him there’s little point in doing interviews etc.

But if we rate a player with fewer expectations higher than most and we bid early, then we have a greater chance of success.

Pretty sure the club was confident of getting Harry Himmelberg because the bid came earlier than expected.

What was our confidence on Himmelberg worth?

The way the draft rules currently sit, where a pick can be traded out after a bid comes in, unless you are bidding a round earlier than where they are generally rated, it's unlikely a team will pass on them.

That said, clubs need to continue to pick NGA/FS as soon as possible, to keep the draft as least compromised as possible so should still be scouting them. However, know you 99% won't get them (particularly in the first two rounds), probably one interview is enough and then just watch their games.

He certainly hasn't done anything in the VFL this year from what I've seen to make me think he'd of turned out to be a good player.

He'd still be a marginal half forward for us if we kept him.
Perhaps claiming he'd lock down a spot was a bit strong. But the standard for marginal half-forward in the Adelaide Crows from 2020-22 is an exceedingly low one.

Gallucci is a character fail. someone who just didn’t have the full package of traits to do what’s necessary to make it.

It’s not an uncommon story. His lack of instincts and footy IQ made it more imperative that he was the type to accept coaching, be humble, work hard etc that just wasn’t who he was though

I think he was one of those guys who liked being a footballer more than he did working towards being a better one

I'm not so sure about that.
What elite football traits did Fog have? He was an undersized key forward that dominated juniors because of his physical strength compared to opponents. That was never going to be enough at AFL level. The question marks around whether he could also become a midfielder were because it was unlikely he could be a key forward at AFL level. He didn't have enough other traits to play any other role.

He actually reminded me of Matt Allen when WC drafted him. Matt was a key forward who wasn't tall enough for that role. The question was if he could play midfield. He now does, albeit in SANFL. Matt played wing for the SANFL State team and did very well.

Matt Allen has more midfield ability than Fog.

For me, Fog was always a big concern and a big mistake.

Gallucci had AFL traits, but not the mental side. He instantly thought he was better than he was and didn't put the work in to get to his best. It's a miss in terms of draft, but at least it was mostly understandable.

McAsey is a real head scratcher. Looked a dominant defender at U18 level, but from the minute he arrived, he looked slow, fell over constantly and didn't seem able to read the ball in the air well at all. Clearly it was an awful drafting decision.

Hindsight is an amazing thing.
