7. Gold Coast – Max Ramsden (Sandringham Dragons)

Ruckman/Forward, 202cm, 86kg

Chris says: Ramsden is still quite raw and is considered a long-term project player by recruiters, but is an athletic freak who has some X-factor about him and shapes as an exciting future prospect. The 19-year-old has averaged 14.3 disposals, 17.5 hitouts and 6.7 score involvements from six NAB League games for the Dragons this season and the Suns would be looking for a future No.1 ruckman beyond Jarrod Witts, who turns 30 this year.

You can only laugh. A rebuilding club selecting a 25 year old mid who probably doesn't get drafted elsewhere for the short term sugar hit to keep them all looking slightly better in their jobs with no real regard for the long term, while a couple of ok long term prospects (inc a pretty reasonable ruck!) sit on the draft board.

Embarrassing. But should not have been surprised. Avoiding the bottom is more important to this club than reaching the top.

You always have to ask why the MSD players were not selected in the National Draft .....in Turners case, he's played 65 games at West Adelaide .....so the 4 games he has played this year must have been real head turners .....a purple patch of form, or his new norm ??

Nothing against the guy but for where we are at, this was a dumb pick as he would almost certainly been available at our second pick.

We had a golden opportunity with pick 4 and failed to take it.

I'm mystified, but then again it's what our recruiters do every time. I'll now be watching the players taken after pick 4 with interest

Not anymore mate, I've been out of the game a few years. Working from the same coverage/highlights as you all are.

So my feedback isn't a reflection of Turner or his talent at all. I wish him all the best as a Crow and hope he plays 100 games. I have no doubt he's a very solid player.

My issue is with the direction. Players like Turner are easy to find - there are lots of them floating around state leagues. Carlton picked one up too. They're solid, they add value. But their ceiling is generally lower and floor higher. They're the 18-30th best players on a list, and even if they 'reach their peak' - they've only got 3-4 years at it.

I much rather we take a flier on someone who has the 'benefit of the unknown' attached to them. A ceiling we can't yet project. The scope to be a top 5-10 player on the list if the cards fall his way. Even if the likelihood is that they bust.

A top 5-6 player on a list is worth 10x more value than the 25th best player. How many McPherson's would you trade to get a Dawson? That's kind of how I see this. What's Turner going to be? A Dunstan-tier player? Ok, so if we wanted that, why wouldn't we have just gone and got Dunstan for free; because that tier of player, while by no means shit, aren't hard to find. Top 5-6 players on a list are. So take every chance to get one.

If I was in Haggis's chair I'd probably have gone for Ramsden and stashed him as a development ruck for when ROB/Strachan are cooked.

Failing that, I like the upside of Sebit Kuek or Mutaz El Nour. Carmichael offers the benefit of the unknown more than Turner does. But don't love him.

Turners selection and Ogilvies comments reek of an admission that he’s drafted a shit midfield and he needs a top up. “A point of difference, speed, left and right”. Ok Hamish, why are we devoid of this type of player given you’ve been in charge for 10 ****ing years that we had to grab a 25 year old state league player?

He questioned our drafting, he went hard on Doedee because he really wanted Burton. Doedee is a good player but so is Burton. He had other examples like over looking Graham. He went on about relying on Tex because we didn’t have any forwards and he was right there too. Pretty sure he bagged the Jones and McHenry selections at the time too for being short people. Funnily enough he hasn’t been around to see us draft more smalls.
