Nothing against the guy but for where we are at, this was a dumb pick as he would almost certainly been available at our second pick.

We had a golden opportunity with pick 4 and failed to take it.

I'm mystified, but then again it's what our recruiters do every time. I'll now be watching the players taken after pick 4 with interest
I am starting to dread what we are going to do in the national draft, what were they thinking taking turner over a few others who looked a much more pressing on the face of it fit for our list. Who are the small mids available or who are the slow kpd's available come November..look out boys

He wasn’t wrong about Ogilvie and hes the biggest issue we currently have.
He wasn't at the time though... as we had other issues.

This board is better for being Marty-free.

Think for a moment about what the first thing Roo said today when defending the club against Blight’s claim our rebuild isn’t working - “…we’re strong in the SANFL” or words to that effect. I find it hard to believe that’s coincidence - I reckon they need something to hang their hat on in the face of crap at AFL level and results at SANFL may be it and this pick may be (even in part) designed to further that objective.

It gets better when turner takes SANFL midfield minutes off the young guys we drafted as mids. Again this is not a crack at the person, its the type of player and age bracket that just seems so out of wack

He never said Ogilvie was the biggest issue, he didn’t rate him as recruiter and said he needed to go, he was right. The results are on the board.
A broken clock is right twice a day...

Our pick in the MSD reminds me of when some random no-name depth player absolutely dominates our side out of nowhere and everyone thinks "who is this guy? Looks like a gun, wish we had him!"

Here's Turner's last two years in the SANFL, I've highlighted his round 3 game against us.

I really hope our recruiting team watched his other games and weren't dazzled by his game against us

So what you're saying.. is.. we drafted Dennis Armfield.

He questioned our drafting, he went hard on Doedee because he really wanted Burton. Doedee is a good player but so is Burton. He had other examples like over looking Graham. He went on about relying on Tex because we didn’t have any forwards and he was right there too. Pretty sure he bagged the Jones and McHenry selections at the time too for being short people. Funnily enough he hasn’t been around to see us draft more smalls.
Both are good disposal but Doedee is a much better contest and intercept mark and move better than Burton.

That 38 disposal 4 goal game against us will never be replicated whilst playing for us. It's an outlier and one that we've pretty much bookmarked as this guy's level when in reality it is probably the best game Brett has played in his life and will never play a game as good as that ever again and our dumb club was seduced by it.

He will probably come into the side and play the non statistically role and suffer the same fate as everyone else who's ever played there.

Which is still at least 3 weeks away because we selected and injured player.

Assuming they grabbed Turner on a 6 month contract, it makes sense. He's a body to fill in for Sloane and Seedsman, then can be moved on at the end of the year. Draft a guy on 18 month contract, it's not a "free hit", it's picking a guy NOW rather than using the spot on an 18 year old from the national/rookie draft because then you've got to find a list spot for them next year. Our list spots are pretty tight given the amount of extensions we've handed out, I doubt we're going to open up many more list spots than 3 for the national draft and try to consolidate them in the top 35, so if you have to decide if you want to use a spot now or see if you can find a similar level of talent in the rookie draft later when you have a clearer picture of your list management needs.

Rightly or wrongly, they selection committee have decided they want a base line of maturity in the team at all times because they think they can't win without it. So Turner is a fill-in for this sort of age bracket that we don't really have a lot of.

Well I was commenting on the passing of the 2nd pick & you replied to my post... yet now you are agreeing with me that it made little sense lol.

Ok KM, I saw this post ...

Perfect opportunity to get 2 of the best available young talent in given we are in rebuild mode... & this.

Which referred to us getting "2 of the best available" and thought it was a bit of a lash out at the recruiting team based on more than what we did / didn't get in the mid-season draft.

Hence the el Guapo reference.

I don't really blow a gasket on who we pick in most drafts - so to me, Turner is a "we'll see" as much as any mid-season draftee.

The not picking someone I don't understand, I would need someone to explain it to me ... as having someone on your list that has even a small chance of turning into a player, seems worth the cost of them turning out ordinary.

Looking at your posts in this thread you seem to be fired up about not only the pass - but also the pick, which I'm guessing is most probably a flow over from our poor results at past drafts. Could be wrong.

I'm baffled as to what the plan was from the club. We opened up two list spots just in case.

Turner would have been available at the 2nd pick. No doubt about it. So why two spots? Were we so committed to Turner that we had to pick him no matter what?
Was the extra spot just in case the clubs above us didn't pick Culley? Is that it? Was that the entire plan?

We could easily have had Derksen or Ramsden and still had Turner. Derksen and Ramsden would both have been longer term projects, but both would have been worth the risk.

Now we have a bloke who, if everything goes perfectly, plays AFL for a couple of years in a midfield with Laird, Sloane and Keays, and takes time away from the guys we actually need to be developing.
Nothing about this selection suggests we have a long term plan for the club. Nothing.

Picking Turner reminds me of when we traded in Daniel Schell on the back of having 1 good game(against us as well)

Oh well, i guess since we wont be competing for a premiership anytime soon, at least it gives us another thing to occupy our footy minds with
viz; following the progress of Ramsden v Turner.

Seems to me that our Club likes being a middle of the road club, the home of "a dime a dozen" type midfielders.

Hopefully our reserves now win the SANFL premiership (defeating the Bays in the GF) and subsequently (along with poort reserves) get booted out of the SANFL.

I don't disagree with a lot of what you've said, but the thought process is stupid (club, not you).

Picking a 25yo for age profile when he has less experience at AFL (0), and is very probably below AFL level physical conditioning does not meaningfully address an age gap.

To use the cliche, age is just a number. He may fit the quota of 25 year-olds that we apparently now have, but he adds no real ability to mentor, train, or other value-add for our younger group.

He only adds to the probability that their development will be delayed as they move down the selection order.

That and he won't be playing for a while anyway. I can't see him being better than a potential draftee at ND, and we are tight for list spots, so frankly will be disappointed if he's still on the list beyond his 6 months.

TL;DR

If he's a long-term project, there were much better options.
If he's a 6 month place-holder he's going to get very few games (especially while injured) and will if anything be a net negative in terms of developing our midfield.

I don't rant often, but this club sometimes makes it hard to hold it in.

In his last 23 games (excluding games v Crows), he's kicked 10 goals. I thought I read somewhere he was a goal kicking mid, but perhaps not.
