? From memory we bid on him in his draft year and he just hasn’t hit his stride consistently at North and was dropped this weekend. Need to be confident of unlocking his potential but he fits our needs perfectly.

I think the ideal trade target a lot of the time is someone we rate who is having a poor year. More likely the club will be open to losing them and costs less although with less surety of their quality.

We did it well with Betts, a lot of people were suggesting we overpaid at the time, if he stayed another year and showed the form he did at the crows would Carlton have fought harder to keep him?

Quality players have poor years, no one makes the AA side and just plays at that level for the rest of their careers, it’s tempting to just focus on wanting the ones playing well right now but they are harder to get and cost more.

A WA side could have gotten a better deal than usual on Cripps if he left last year.

he's said different though. pretty sure whilst he was haggling for a better deal they dropped the offer that they'd put on the table. He said he went back to them and would sign for the original amount, which was less than both us and Roos had on the table. But they refused.

The Players who I would like to Target

are a extra tall for our Defence. Payne of Brisbane,(197cm) or Cox from Freo.(195cm)
I would look at Day(191cm) from Hawthorn (which would release Dawson to the Wing) and i think in time will make a good Mid.

And maybe Graham of Richmond,(Solid 181cm) would be a big improvement in our Midfield, runs both ways

crouch gets us nothing, I'd be happy keeping him as depth and trade out one of Keays or Laird. I know we won't do it and nor would we keep crouch out of the side for any meaningful stretch of games. But i reckon that's our optimum rebuilding move.

The thing with keeping someone like Crouch as depth is he's only depth until we're beginning to panic (really, this isn't an Adelaide issue, it's a bottom four issue). After all, no one at the club can afford a long stretch of poor results (nor can the club itself if we're being realistic seeing it's been at the bottom for three-four seasons and eventually that's got to hurt the bottom line), especially if it's against the other flotsam in this league. After all development is a whole lot easier when a side is winning, as confidence is tied to it.

Optimally, the likely best path is to not trade out any of our senior players who are best 22 at this point in time. We've certainly looked like we've burned too much of our list at this point (seeing we're really inexperienced, even compared to other rebuilding clubs) and we do need to move away from the bottom four in the near future seeing how long we've been down. Laird/Keays are a solid pairing to help with that on the inside and likely the best pairing we could get our hands on at the moment without expending a fair chunk of draft capital. On the other side of the coin, we're not in a position where we need more first round picks, as we currently have 30+ kids on our list, and likely neither are attracting (or are interested in going to) clubs who have that top 5-6 pick we're in need of. Our list isn't short of prospects at this point in time. Crouch wouldn't be worth anything in a trade, but is a lot more expendable owing to the fact he's a really poor fit in our line up with that Keays/Laird pairing, and we are wholly committed to Keays/Laird as our senior mids.

There is potentially a point coming in the near future where we need to ask what are we doing with Ben Keays. Whether we reinvent him as a half forward/back end of a rotation mid (my pref. as it could be an upgrade on McHenry if he doesn't find a stronger offensive game in the next year) or trade him, however, that's not a question for this offseason. Likely it's going to be the season Sam Berry breaks out into a top line midfielder (if he does), as Berry will probably end up an upgrade on Keays and both are similar players.

dont think their CEO went on radio boasting how they'd stitched up the deal 18 months out. Which according to Eddie's own words is rubbish as he tried hard to remain at Carlton.

i think you're right, he told Malthouse as a brag who then went on radio. Obviously they had a good working relationship. It's funny though, Betts' version about when he decided was very different.

I think the point of him saying we "stitched" Betts up 18 months prior is we had ID'd that position as a big need and knew we were going to make a serious run at him when he became a FA.

I'd also guess the only reason the AFL had to do even a cursory investigation was because of Trigg's record with Tippett. But yea, Betts begging Carlton for just $50K more a year to stay and looking at taking a deal worth $900K less overall should tell you how stitched up the deal wasn't.

it's a bit weird given Billy got a go back there. And this is meant to be a rebuild, so what's to lose by seeing how he goes as a KOD at AFL level?

It's like the coaches are so wedded to their structures as being the best, that if they change it up, it could never work, so lets not try it.

We are at the stage where we probably need to consider trading out some of our young talent & trading in a couple of mid aged players to fill gaps. Ie. A key defender. Given we have by far the youngest & most inexperienced list.
