Can't see Fletcher going 1st round, my guess would be mid 2nd round
Potentially zero spots - if we change list structure from 37/5 to 38/4, put Seedsman on the rookie list (as a prelude to putting him on the inactive list), and retain Turner.
We're walking a very narrow road this time around, dependent upon trading contracted players just to meet the AFL's mandatory minimum requirements.
I thought he had another year, but you're right. However, he's not a free agent, so they will probably have to trade for him anyway.
Jaspa Fletcher is this years draft though. So they will need points for Ashcroft and Fletcher.

Well it's not a massive stretch of the imagination.
GC are reportedly in a massive salary cap hole not only going into next year, but in their ability to hold onto anticipated high draft pick academy players in the coming years, as well as trying to hold onto all the stars they currently have.
The question is which players are GC trying to get rid of to alleviate their salary cap pressure? In a perfect world they get to choose who walks out the door, but when it comes down to it their salary cap needs to be reduced one way or another. Hollands wouldn't be on minimum chips with his current contract set to expire 2024, and by the sounds of it their cap issues are going to be around for the foreseeable future.
We should be absolutely up to our eyeballs in asking the question of just about anyone on their list in terms helping them relieve their cap pressure, and Rankine should be considered amongst those (despite the fact he's uncontracted, us taking him is one less headache for their salary cap)

Correct. That's the beauty of a salary cap dump, because all other teams will be circling like vultures. The great thing for us is that we're already tied up in discussions with them because of Rankine. GC might say 'we want you to take X player', and we say 'no how's about we take Y player'. Ultimately GC have to relieve that pressure one way or another

At certain stages early season Bowes was in GC's top 6-7 players .....then something happened, and he's in the reserves
I know he had an injury ....but IIRC his fall from grace occurred b4 that injury

Gold Coast playmaker Jack Bowes has emerged as a trade target for Hawthorn as he weighs up his future with the Suns.
The No. 10 pick from the 2016 draft has attracted interest from several clubs including the Hawks and Crows after an injury-marred season.
Talks on his future are expected to ramp up next week as the Suns prepare to make some aggressive moves in a bid to prime the list for a shot at a finals berth next season.
Gold Coast has been forced to pay premium price for its slew of high draft picks and are prepared to be bold in next month’s exchange period to help free up some salary cap space for other strategic targets.
Bowes has shown a lot of promise as a silky defender-midfielder across six seasons and remains contracted to the club until the end of 2024.
The Cairns product is on a healthy wage for the next two seasons and could be part of a salary dumping exercise which clubs including Collingwood and Greater Western Sydney have performed to help reset their lists.
He would be the ideal back pocket for us.

Could taking on Bowes’ full salary allow us to pay up less for Rankine?

Draft Prospect: Jack Bowes
The draft gets a layer of class with Bowes. He makes smart and quick decisions, and does everything with extra polish.
Bowes is a midfielder who shapes games. He is one of the neatest users of the ball by foot, and can spot up teammates over short and long distances. He makes life far easier for forwards leading at him, and is careful in placing the ball in front of them and letting them run onto the ball.
He's also good overhead, and moves well through traffic. There is a calmness to Bowes' game: he doesn't get rushed or flustered, and never seems panicked. As a midfielder, he is also of modern size and shape. His 187cm height allows him to mark well above his head, and push forward and hit the scoreboard, which he did in the division two carnival.
Bowes is a professional, a leader, and a player his teammates warm to. He also has strong senior experience up his sleeve, and picked up 31 disposals, eight inside 50s and eight clearances in a NEAFL elimination final for Gold Coast's reserves side late in the year. He backed that up with a quality display in the NAB All Stars game with 23 disposals, where he showed he is a class above many in this year's crop.
Bowes won't be the type to burst out of a stoppage with an explosive run, but he tested well for pace at the draft combine, registering a time of three seconds in the 20-metre sprint event. That placed him in the top 30 per cent of competitors, dispelling any real concerns over his leg speed.
By his own standards, Bowes was down on form for the Allies in the division one championships compared to his stint with Queensland at the division two carnival. Bowes dropped from an average of 33 disposals to 14 disposals for the Allies, and was outbodied at stages against some of the better midfielders, and he will need to add a bit more strength to his frame before being AFL ready.
There's some Trent Cotchin qualities in the way Bowes plays. He moves swiftly between stoppages, he doesn't fumble, and he doesn't waste his touches. The Queenslander plays in a smooth and uncomplicated way; when he's got the ball, you can trust he'll do something good with it.
Bowes looks set to cost the Gold Coast one of their suite of top-10 picks and it is expected they will match an early bid for the classy midfielder. Their cross-town rivals the Brisbane Lions could place a bid on Bowes at No.3, but if they don't, it won't take much longer to arrive.

Hasn't really played there at AFL level however. Draft bios are pretty useless after 60-70 games.Not sure if we're truly looking at him it would be with that role in mind?

He's played 83 as a Backman.
We would be looking at him as a small defender with Luke Brown's retirement. We are short in that department, and Parnell plus Jones don't fill me with confidence taking that on in 2023 if we truly want to start winning more games.
Hinge is more of a half back. Doedee better suited to being intercept medium.
Future first for both and a future third.

Ben Keays was drafted as a midfielder but played a hell of a lot of half forward/forward pocket for Brisbane especially the last couple of years before we gave him a shot.
He played 30 games before coming to us. He was just behind a lot of Brisbane mids, for good reason too.
He is attributes are clearly better suited to midfield (Keays) and his lack of AFL was a result of Brisbane's list at the time.
Otherwise he would have been playing forward for them.
