Gold Coast last year was at the centre of salary cap space being moved, with Darcy Macpherson and pick No.19 offered to North Melbourne to take his salary off the books at the Suns before Macpherson decided to stay at the Suns.
Players traded against their will beginning? Put them at a club they don't like or that wont play them, sending club frees up salary for encouraging a trade (or just a better list situation) and the recieving club (probably a lower club not using up salary cap) gets draft pick rewards.

Didnt we try this with the saints re brad crouch where it was suggested the crows take a salary dump player or 2 to get a better offer for crouch and the AFL pooha'd it..iirc?

Edit. When is danihers huge short term contract that got the bombers band 1 up..i am hoping it didn't get renegotiated quietly back to a longer term at a lower amount per year that would be a straight up rort of the system to get a better compo pick

Brad, but yes. The issue was around the compo pick

Nothing to see here.

Joe deal in limbo: AFL probes Daniher contract, rivals ask questions

It did, this year, against the "rule" they invented when Buddy went to Sydney which was "if the player is a RFA, you can't change anything in the contract, it is locked in stone" So Buddy's $ per season were locked in for every year of the 9 year contract causing the Swans some grief that they couldn't move $ around to different years.

Then this year the big Daniher contract was apparently "smoothed out" over more years. Other clubs queried it but it was signed off by the AFL in typical corrupt AFL fashion. Absolutely no doubt that the AFL was complicit in getting pick 7 for Daniher compo.

We of course got shafted on Crouch because we are not a favoured club of the Old Boys in AFL House. It's why we need to tread carefully with our Rankine trade, the AFL is watching as we've lured him away from their special assistance club. If we try and short change GC, the retribution will be painful.

Edit: just saw your reply Thetrader15, AFL was not transparent about the Daniher contract shenanigan's, it's a law unto itself!

As a quick response to the above ...
  • I think Ned has upside, that is what I said ... I still believe that. He is like Sholl in that way - not well-rounded, but has potential in certain attributes that count. Will he step up? I dunno, just think he has improvement in him that the others I mentioned do not.
  • I'm not weighing in his first rounder at all. I think he deserves a spot on our list, maybe that sits outside of the best 22 next year ... maybe he sits just inside that.
  • I would not play him as a permanent small forward, no. He needs to be a small utility player that can switch into the middle, on the wing and some time up forward,
  • I believe other clubs would want him, but trade value is not a good guide to worth. Ben Brown? Peter Wright? Nakia Cockatoo?
Look, I am not arguing that he was a well spent pick when drafted ... I am saying he has some upside - could become an AFL level player - and I would not throw him out with the bathwater.

What is his upside? You haven't specified it at all, just that apparently he has it.

If that's the case Grundy won't be going anywhere. Still can't see what Melbourne is thinking when it comes to trading in Grundy.
Guess with losing Jackson and Gawn turning 31 soon the Demons might be a bit worried about taking a step back. Think the plan is for Gawn to be a more permanent forward and let Grundy carry the majority of the ruck duties.

Given Brisbane are going to need a lot of draft capital - picks and points, to bring in everything, not to mention a very tough salary cap situation, could we possibly make a late steal attempt?
I'd be interested in:
Bailey
K Coleman
Berry
Raynor
Berry
Robertson

Throw enough money and a pick or two and you might be able to shake one free.

What's the point of him saying anything?

I don't think there's a single thing that anyone on this board would agree with, whether it was reasonable or not. It's a pointless discussion.

Why do you assume they would have cap or points issues?

They'll get second round compos for McStay and Gardiner, and will trade two firsts for Dunkley and a 2nd. That should give them enough points for this year.

Gardiner is leaving too?

Why would they get rid of a gun to get another one in?
Makes no sense.

Wonder what that would mean for McStay & Hill...
Yep, Pies are already committed to bringing in players using the money they are saving by pushing Grundy out the door.

As a flag competitor in upcoming years, I've got no idea why any contending club would provide Pies with cap relief by taking Grundy.

What picks do we have to throw at them?
