Peak Andrew McLeod was so damn good and made 23 look so damn cool, it's a no contest for me.

32 is a clear 2nd, but if you gave me the option of drafting 1 Andrew McLeod or Roo, Danger and Fog in the same year. I'm pretty sure I'd still take Bunga.

The Andrew McLeods of this world are as rare as hens teeth! We've not come even remotely close to replicating him since.
The number probably should have been retired. McLeod is our best ever player. It is nice that it's become tradition to give the number to indigenous players though. It's hard to find a better person for young indigenous players to try and emulate than McLeod as he was such a professional.

I feel sorry for the younglings in here who missed the genuine midfield Mcleod years.

His peak was watching a player change the game in front of your eyes. Someone who could slay you in ways you didn't even know existed on a football field.

Just imagine if he had 2 healthy knees throughout his 340 games. It would have been cheat mode!

Rewatching McLeod finals highlights right now. What a player. It hurts though. That 97 team was something else. Our current list isn't fit to tie their boots.

Jesus number 6 is cursed after Modra. Leaver, Griffin & Gibbs.

I blame Malcolm Blight. Modra never should have been traded and the number 6 should have been retired.
I don’t get the whole retiring numbers thing.

It's like a mark of respect. Sort of like they get to own that piece of the club. It's a pretty common thing in sports.
I understand that, just not a fan of it I guess.
In 200 years there might not be any numbers left.
Then you have the issue of should 32 be retired if 23 was.

It was reported Doedee had been carrying injuries for at least half a season ......didn't stop many wanting to trade him, or saying he wasn't much chop ....try taking overhead marks with a bung shoulder

Yet other favourites who are in bad form .....oh, they must be injured ...
It is funny how some players are a forwarded the benefit of the doubt and others not so much...

Even putting aside the doomerism, it's not something I'm afraid of. We don't produce players of McLeod and Ricciuto's quality often enough that we're going to run out of numbers.
So what numbers in your opinion have been worthy of being retired?
Ie what’s the standard?

From the Crows just McLeod & Ricciuto imo. Modra is debatable. He was freakishly talented but he didn't hang around as long as the others.
Who gets to decide if it comes back?
You’ve got collingwood with Nick Daicos wearing his dads number because they give it to all thier first recruits (presti rule?)
He’s supposed to be giving it up next year but wants to keep it.

The head of the retired guernsey numbers committee

Father son situation seems like a fair reason to make an exception. He has two sons though so that might make family dinners awkward.

It was absolutely disgraceful of the club to play a guy injured when it's clear we weren't making finals. No wonder his form dropped off.
Many of us were calling for Worrell to play ahead of an injured Doedee for much of the season.

We could have got half a season into Worrell & fixed up Doedee earlier.

Crazy stuff.

And Rocket Maynard with a stranglehold on best ever non-indigenous player to wear 23 :p
