TBH I don't think we would consider accepting Bonnar. The way I see it, Port are shopping him anyway because his place in the team is slipping and they're trying to slowly raise the offer for JHF and hope we bite.

Ultimately I think they will keep buckling, because if we hold JHF to his contract then even if he still wants out next year suddenly Adelaide have trade capital again. Plus, just quietly, I think Mr I Want To Go Pick One would crack the shits a little if they undervalued him at the trade table and as a result it then doesn't get done. Yeah, he'd crack them at us, but them too.

If we got butters it would only be him and 1 pick. If bonner was Involved it would be him and 2 picks. The key is the picks need to be lover than what port have. They'd want to get them lower or deal a better player.

All things aside I think bonner is a decent player and would suit us. But not if it's what it looks like on face value.

I don't even know how it will work logistically...

Archer, Atu, Bonar, Hall, Turner, Bergman, Young, Perez, Goater, McDonald... how many back flankers do you need? A quarter of our list are back flankers already.

How is it within the rules that a chairman of another club can contact a player, manager, and his parents multiple times in the first year of his AFL rookie contract? AFL absolutely lacks in anti tampering rules.
Surprised he admitted it,
Isn’t that exactly what player managers are for, to be one step removed from the process.

AFL integrity probably shouldn’t be ticking this type of behaviour off.

Don't be sneaky and throw Turner in there to distract from your inability to list them alphabetically.

lol i was going down the list from footwire, even they don't believe we have so many flankers.

Ah eventually some logic. Totally agree

To my uneducated eyes, Riley Bonner and Jack Bowes seem to have remarkably similar playing stats. Means nothing of course

Agreed, but there are caveats on 2/3rds of those blokes. Unsigned, recently drafted etc etc. Hell, Clarko might not see half of them as back flankers.

Archer - yep but very raw
Atu - delist surely
Bonar - medium defender and may not be part of long term plans
Hall - near the end
Turner - same as Atu
Young - ideally depth
Perez - yep
Goater - I think wing will be his best bet long term
McDonald - yep

So really out of that lot we don’t actually much much long term running half back types with pace, solid defensively and skills. So I’d say it’s still a need - albeit not at the same level as small forward or KP

If Bonner is the player that unlocks this deal with no change to the draft picks on offer than we should pack it up and shut the gates.

Bonner is a fringe player who adds depth and nothing else. The deal will end up being pick 8 in a weak draft and pick 10ish for the the best young talent we have had walk in our door since D Wells.

Hold firm on Port throwing in a very good player with the aforementioned picks or tell Jase he is to report to pre-season session #1 and show him what happened to Cam McCarthy after he sat a year out....

I'm seething at the prospect of us rolling over on this.

I may have my supporter blinkers on, but I see Goater as a wing, otherwise agree.

If we make him sit out next year in Adelaide while he gets his wage there is a fair chance his s**t attitude will see his training standards drop and with any luck he turns into a fat slob who no one wants.

Tough for him but we need to start standing up for ourselves. They were taking the puss with this, they abused our good faith and they need to pay. We may miss a pick 8 and pick 12 but no one will * with us again.

That is worth more than picks given how this unfolded. No way Wardlaw or whoever else we might take tries something similar next year if we do that.

We need to make a stand here. Otherwise who the * are we anymore?

It does get a bit awkward if no deal is reached, but I think it is far worse for PA than us. Getting him and his management to agree to demand to be traded only to PA, less than a year after declaring he wanted to be the number one pick and while still contracted, creates a massive expectation on them to get the deal done.

We may not get the same value in twelve months time, but it would still be better than folding this year, it would set a precedent.

PA would rightly cop a lot of heat from JHF's management, having promised him the world and then not having the stones to even get the deal done. Forcing a trade for a contracted number one draft pick, was always going to be expensive, they can not shy away from that if it doesn't go exactly the way they want it to. Their name would be damaged when trying to recruit other players going forward as well.

In terms of what his value is now compared to when he was drafted, PA don't get a say in that. Like every draft pick, he was selected on potential and through no fault of our own, we haven't had a chance to see if that potential is the real deal or not. You can't bang on someone's door, demand to buy their house, then when told the price, tell them they have to give you a discount because they haven't finished the renovations.

Unbelieveable !
Screw 'em over North. Hope you've posted this in other threads ?

He hasn’t proven he’s even close to a generational talent. JHF was honestly underwhelming this year and I think I’d a fair chance of being a big body who beat up on kids at underage level
You clearly were not watching or you just have no idea. My money on the second part.

The difference is Bowes unlocks another top ten pick and is a midfielder playing defence where Bonner is a defender whacked in as steak knives with two average picks for the best prospect we’ve had through our doors since Carey.

Please don't take my previous post to mean we should take Bonner as part of the trade for JHF. (They can throw him in as steak knives if they want to.)

Irrespective of what has happened over the last 12 months, JHF is referred to as a "generational" player. To me that means he is able to win games off his own boot, to be able to pick up others and carry them on his back to victory. He is or is going to be a Dustin Martin or Patrick Cripps or Patrick Dangerfield type. Who knows, in 5 to 7 years time he might have emulated Dusty and won threes Norm Smiths, in a threepeat.

That's what a generational player should be able to do in my estimation.

So, Port must pay the price. For me that price is one pick in the top 5, plus another pick between 6 and 10 this year and another top 10 pick (their problem to arrange) next year if they finish in the eight. Then they can throw in Bonner as the steak knives.

Make it happen Euge.
