Because at the time it's what we needed. Unfortunately gameplans and coaches changed, that's also what he cost. Even though he hasn't been a top 50 player, he has always been one of the best wingers.

Everyone in the media and on bigfooty said we needed a winger with excellent skills to deliver to Max and we would be on our way.

You're smarter than this Gringo. I think you just carry on because you like the reaction and heat you get from the others

No it wasn't
List was never ready for a player like Hill at that stage

What's his headspace like .... seemed pretty fragile recently
No idea I don’t know him. But keep in mind he was playing for Norf…
Losing by 10+ goals weekly and having instability within the club, on top of his grandma passing away late in the season.

I think he’d be fine in a new environment though. Has plenty of talent

I still remember the media and all the talk about the saints needing better delivery into the forward 50 to take us forward. There was heaps of chatter about it for weeks and plenty of "footy experts" saying brad hill would fix that.

Unfortunately in the end it hasn't happened

Not just inside 50, but better ball use overall. Hill was definitely seen as the type we needed at the time to help improve that area.

I've got a soft spot for Long...

He's fearless with and without the footy, tough and unconditionally aggressive.

He makes us a better team, would hate to lose him but could easily see why he would be feeling tempted.

You get what you reward as a club, I think the coaches might need to reconsider what they reward but as it stands we could be losing a bloke who gives us exactly what we lack

And plenty said he wasn’t what we needed

And who is the media Jon Ralph - Caro ?

Watching Southampton last night .... a young supposedly inferior team beat up Chelsea was glorious ..... they absolutely hunted them down and a showed mental willingness to never give up and they didn't and probably should have won 4-1

We were definitely lacking a mental edge in the 2nd half of the season and even at times in the 1st half of the season we seemingly lost or lacked concentration and commitment

It's one area we could improve upon immensely
We've been good value for those giantkilling suprise wins against superior opposition over the recent years. It's probably where we do best and sadly, probably the reason why the more optimistic of us have accepted the endemic failure of the past 12 years.

On the other hand, calm professional wins against lower grade opponents are definitely not our bag: either we struggle and just make it after making the game a lot tougher than it ought to have been, or we outright lose and calamity/melting follows. I'm sure I don't need to provide examples for you to agree with this claim.

What kind of mentality is that?

I like Long but he is extremely replaceable.

If he has a better offer from North, he should take it.
He is not that replaceable. He might not always be in our best or dragging the team over the finish line, but he sets the tone in a way few of his teammates do and I'm sure they love playing with him. He reminds me a bit of how that mongrel Darren Milrburn (?) was at the Cats. Potential ceiling could be Toby Greene level.

Additionally, since he's come to the club he's been a leadership type person - I think he brought the whole team up to NT in his first year and got them fishing and whatnot, he's definitely embraced being an indigenous leader at St Kilda for a while too.

I love the guy, he frustrated the hell out of me last year with all his errors, but this year he's turned the corner and I would spew if he bailed on us now.

If that skip chicken Clarko gets him, he'll turn him into a star, 100% certain. We need to keep him a Saint. Could finish an icon of the club if we develop him properly.

Utterly bizarre if Connelly is desisted. His strengths are two areas we cry out for, run & carry at speed.

Hill on the other hand gives us minimal of both and has looked disinterested during parts of the year. Good decision to get on the front foot regarding him being contracted.

Brisbane's points will be interesting as ashcroft could go top 3.

As for picking off players, couple at essendon look gettable. Otherwise gws might be good to raid.
Ashcroft will go number 1

I suspect what's happening with Long is that he has had a good end to the year and his management will be pushing for a three year deal on half decent coin. Now he can also leverage other teams against us. I'm confident he will re-sign but we will have to come to the party.
I would not give Long 3 years. Some of his games were terrible

Like Darren Minchington?

Long simply doesn’t get enough of the ball. That last game but huge stretches of games over his career he just goes missing. No great loss
I agree. No great loss if he goes

Interesting point.
Ryder - retired
Hill - rumored to move
Nasish - rumored to move
Long - rumored to move
Her own son - prefers to go to another club

Time to earn your corn, Kath.
Is that her job?? (I can’t tell if this is a joke post or not, but I’ve seen a couple of posts regarding this now).

Heard nothing but good things about Aunty, and last I checked she’s not responsible for list management.

Ryder (34 years old), Hill (potential reuniting with Clarko), Nasiah (homesick), and Long (OOC, been thrown around) all have legitimate reasons as to why they are not or may not be on our list next year. Amon almost certain offered a better contract at Hawthorn.

Don’t think we’ll lose any more then Ryder this off-season, but sure, there’s possibility some if not all go. As far as I’m concerned though it has nothing to do with being indigenous or the work of Aunty Katrina.

At most you could say that a section of our fans have been racist in their ongoing vilification of players like Hill, but, it’s not like his position in the team has been that stable anyway. I’m sure Aunty has been well earning her coin with some of the flack our indigenous players have been subjected to, but on a brighter note, we’ve really led the way in that area this season. Loved seeing the indigenous gift giving at the start of most games, and the various flags in the change rooms, and everything else that goes on behind the scenes.

Anyhow, since this is a trade thread, truly hope we keep Long and Nasiah, they could both be awesome next season and beyond. And as long as Brad Hill is on our list I’ll support him (and the coaches) to get the most out of himself.

Media - Another team has approaches some players

It's the silly season, it's the same thing every year, speculation is rife until we know what the list is for the next season. You watch, when we get the 2023 list finalised, we'll be back to being a top 4 contender.

Long gone, NWM gone ( likely), Hill gone ( not bad but still a mess).
And people wonder I am down grading my membership.
The club, with its false dawns, it's weak mentality, it's haphazard game style, its lack of ball skills etc etc, now losing ,( possibly), the one of a few hard nuts in Long, and a talent ( maybe) in NWM, shows the club never learns.
Let’s play this out if what you’re suggesting does happen as well as what else is speculated.
NWM - 1st rnd (9-11)
Hill - 1st rnd (19-20)
Long - mid to late 2nd or early third
Bytel - 3rd
Byrnes - late 3rd to early 4th

All of a sudden our hand is starting to look like we can go all out and build a foundation around our core talent kids.
