How many of Mitchell's disposals from those 40 possessions will be clangers, that's the issue for me.

About 10%, ie 4.

Screenshot_20220901-131508_AFL.jpg

At his best he's more than just an accumulator though.
He racked up heaps of ball AND did damage with it in his brownlow year (and to a lesser extent in 2021).

He hasn't played much fulltime mid this year (stuff all centre bounces), so his stats for 2022 are a bit misleading.

Last year's stats are a better indicator of where he's at since coming back from his post brownlow broken leg. (Because he played fulltime mid)

Getting the 2021 or better version of him would be worth trading him in for- but only if he came cheap in a firesale type situation in term of picks.

The hawks tried selling him off for top dollar 12 months ago and had zero interest.
They need to meet the market and accept a 2nd/3rd rounder type deal if they really want him gone.

A kicking efficiency of 55% doesn't say much. It would be interesting to know his metres gained as well. He doesn't come across as a run and carry player to me. Not sure he can play another position either.

His efficiency has been particularly bad this year as he has been forced out of the midfield and has been a fish out of water playing fwd etc.

Last year and in his brownlow year his kicking efficiency was at a far more respectable ~65%.
His meters gained this year has been 'average' 326m.

Last year as a fulltimr mid he was 'above average' 388m and in his brownlow year 'elite' 446m.

He really was the total package before he broke his leg- heaps of ball AND damaging with it.

He showed last year that his brownlow form is probably past him... but he's still capable of being a decent mid who can do a bit of damage with the ball.

Those inside ball winners are back in vogue now though. You can train them to take the dish off option rather than one two stats padders too. The Hawks have Newcombe, Worpol and Ned Long who can win their own ball but are going to be there when they challenge again.

Mitchell finished last year's Brownlow in 7th place. To suggest that he won't make us better in the short term is probably a bit rich, it's more just very temporary than a long term structural thing. Like Paddy Ryder we can use him but it's a patch job.

We really struggled when Steele and Gresham went down. To me it means reshuffling players around but realistically putting more meat in the pan is going to help us play finals so I think we'll go hard at anything that can move us forward next year.
Yeah, I don’t mind a play for Mitchell at all.

Adding him and De Goey gives our midfield a nice balance that could compete and beat any other midfield out there (it’s been a long time since we could say that as a Saints supporter).

Pure inside mid/extractors: Tom Mitchell, Brad Crouch, Jack Bytel

Inside/out mids: Jack Steele, Marcus Windhager, Mitch Owens, De Goey/Gresh

Windhager and Owens are the game changers for us. With a bit of (long overdue) luck, we’ve landed 2 dynamic young mids with potentially very high ceilings that, injuries permitting, are likely to explode in the coming years and push us up the ladder.

You could start a combination of the above midfield and confidently expect to win the battle most weeks in the AFL.

We need to be aggressive in continuing to improve that area of the ground and Windy and Owens have given us a solid platform to be aggressive and pursue a bloke like Mitchell.

We ended up with 3 very good players in Draft just gone and 2 were a huge bonus(played like 1st Rd picks) at the picks that they went at .
2 of them have re-signed with us,and one supposedly wanting out with a year still left on his 1st AFL contract.
If we can somehow get another Round 1 pick this year and hope that Milera has.a very good 2nd season,
That allows us to have at least 2 1st Rd picks in 2023.
If Milera does go well in 23,then we chase 2,x 1st Round picks for him, with 1 being a future 1st.
That's at least another 2x 1st Rd picks in 2024.
That's basically 6x1st Rd picks from 3 consecutive Drafts for us.
Surely some success would come from this, but we are St.Kilda.

clearly we are under-rating the combo of long and hill

He came 7th in the Brownlow last year. Not sure he's that far off it.

North’s #1 pick on the table.
Do we try?

Nah, basically Ashcroft is gone and picks 2 to 6 are pretty even. Then after that another 5 or so aren't heaps behind them. It's the kind of year one team could rate a player at 2 and another at 12. Guys like Sheezel and Humphrey look good but not so good that I'm stumping up overs for them.

I knew I could count on the stay at home dad to come through with the well researched response.
Cheers little fella x

But what if it’s Mitchell without De Goey, or vice versa?

Reading some of these posts, geez you'd think de Goey has already signed up with the Saints. I wonder what our plan is if he stays at the Pies? Do we have a Plan B? I must say I'm not filled with confidence that we do.

Plan B - Tom Mitchell and Matt Crouch.

🙄

He is one we are keen on talking too.

Way to early to call it anything other than that.

Hawthorns price tag will also have a big say in it.
I'm not sure why we would even want to be talking to him unless Brad Crouch has asked for a trade?

Both play the same role, both 29-30, both would be taking away midfield minutes from the players that we need to develop if we are ever going to be a threat.

Seems like 2-4 is pretty even,

Then 5-11 is the next tier where they could fall anywhere.

Agree that next tier isn't far off though by the sounds of it so not worth trading up

I reckon we are in a good spot

So Hawks are happy to let Mitchell go and back Newcombe, Worpel and Long

But we want to bring Mitchell on to take midfield minutes away from Owens and Windhager

This kind of recruiting is probably playing a fair role in why we struggle to develop out own
