he's no legend
you're no legend.

What did he say that got you so worked up, that we don't know what a winning culture is? ... we've finished in the bottom half of the ladder for a decade (apart from one slight outlier), what he's saying is a hundred percent correct, you're just too sensitive to accept it. We're a crap team, we've been a crap team since about the time we pushed him out. Watching the saints over the past 10 years has been by and large a slog, with a lot of false crests. Just when we start to believe we get shaken back to reality. It's tiring. Hearing what he has to say is a breath of fresh air, because it's the truth.

I watch pretty much everything he does on fox.
His language and football knowledge specificaly around expectations and driving high performance culture would be exactly what we need.

Ross wasn’t the only reason we were so good from 2008-2011
Roo was a superstar , but the last few years of his career did he really help in the development of the kids coming through , suppose they were all spuds and you couldn't inspire dead wood.

I think his best is much better than Hill’s best. If they paid part of his salary he’d be worth a look. He was an elite HBF when GWS were flying. His potential is to be our best player by a fair margin. You could throw him into Sincs spot and release him into the mids. His kicking is elite. He’s not a match winner like DeGoey but he’s been the better player so far.

So the Whitfield/Haynes rumours resurface a month later. You'll recall pundits kicking this idea around on bigfooty in early September with many describing Whitfield as an injury prone hack well passed his prime. I disagreed with that assessment then and I still do. I posted details of Whitfield's injuries in Trade thread II (post 2793 if anyone's interested), making the point that they were not soft tissue hamstring/calf type injuries that would hamper his output forever going forward. He played this year with an ankle injury which limited his run and was headed for an op at the end of the season. He's an elite trainer, demands the best of himself and at 28 still has years of good football left. He's a point of difference for us in that he's an excellent kick and makes great decisions with ball in hand.
The talk in early September was that Hill would leave for North and we were a chance for DeGoey. Whitfield would've been the Hill replacement at half back. Now that neither of those options eventuated I still like the idea of Hill and Whitfield as half back flankers and I love Gringo's idea of playing Sinclair in the midfield. He's a ball magnet and he's not going to get any less of it playing as a mid. And that frees Steele up to play forward more often. He's a good set shot and can take a contested mark.
The Whitfield business only makes sense for us if GWS pay 300/350k of his salary for the duration of his contract. It would have to be a Pie's Treloar/Grundy type of deal. But I don't see it as a Bowes arrangement with a top 10 dp coming back. Bowes will never be a tenth of the player that Whitfield is even if he's not at his absolute best. So I'm all in on Whitfield, he'll make us a much better side next year. As for Haynes I have no idea what's happened with him. He was one of the best defenders in the comp in 2018-20, All Australian in 2020 iirc. His fall from the heights the past couple of years has made Icarus's look like he tripped over his shoelaces and stumbled down a few steps. And he's two years older than Whitfield which I think is significant.
Who the f*** knows what GWS are doing. They operate a bit like active fund managers continually trading players who were high draft picks for other draft picks in an endless cycle. I've read they're only willing to let Haynes and Whitfield go if they can't get a satisfactory deal for Hopper. Why would they get rid of Taranto and Hopper, that's the engine room of their midfield. Maybe they're tanking to take Reid as a number one pick next year. They'll hang onto him for a year or two then trade him for more high draft picks and on it goes.

Sorry, tried to include my post (details of Whitfield's injuries) from the defunct trade thread II to this thread but it didn't work. No genius I'm afraid.

What’s the effect of Hanners Gears Paddy and so on? Or is that largely just consumed by contracts (increases) signed this year?
We are in a position to take on a big contract as well renewing some players contracts next year like Gresham , Coffield , Clark , Milera - so anything can happen when you have the coin to get it done.

I expect a rush at the end of trade period with players like Whitfield , Crouch , Mitchell etc sold off to get them off the books.

Amazing we were on our third trade thread before the period even started. Imagine what we could've accomplished if we actually made some trades!! This has to be a record as far as post per trades... although you can't divide by zero...

And his Mum the babysitter
If you actually knew his mum and that side of the family you wouldn't say shit. His father is not a great person, but he has very little to do with Goddard's growing up. Brendan's mum is an absolute saint, pardon the pun.

Seems to me all you have done is read a news article about BJs dad and his half brother who had very very little to do with him as a kid. Having not seen BJ in a few years, I can't comment if he has anything to do with them now. But to generalise on his whole family is a shithouse call....
Which probably says more about you as a person than anything you have said about Goddard to be honest...

Honestly a media gig over a coaching gig in a heartbeat for me.

Coaching would suck. Every single one of them is waiting to get the ass.

Coaching everyday of the week for me. It’s like 3D chess with the smell of deep heat.

Culture discussions are so bullshit. Winning papers over every crack.
Richmond in their premiership years had tons of off field indiscretions.
Stack in jail, the two getting the souvas in gc, Hardwick raging at his kids footy game umpires etc but the media say their culture is good because they are winning.

Same with degoey this year. Gets in trouble multiple times but as soon as he's playing good footy and collinwood are winning, the media start saying that collingwood is the best place for him because of the culture (despite that culture being in place when he *ed up in the first place).

And at the other end of the scale is us. We have had next to no public bad news stories but we don't win so apparently we have a bad culture.

So bullshit

I get what you’re saying, but the consistently better clubs do have a culture of excellence. In almost everything they do. It’s real and undeniable.

That’s not to say that our boys can’t operate in that culture or aren’t striving towards success. It’s just that we’re not at that level, and somebody or something has to provide both the impetus and the pathway for the group to collectively transition to the next level.

Having a spiritual leader like Joel Selwood who operates intuitively at that level and who demands that his teammates do the same helps enormously.

Look's like you don't think much of our players - we dropped off after the bye shockingly for sure , but when you lose Steele and even Howard , Gresham for the last remaining games against top 4 teams it doesn't help.

People on here give it to Howard , but when he never played round 17 , 18 , 19 , 20 we were badly exposed - so the addition of Cordy should be a big upgrade on Joyce.

It also was not helped by players going missing , which has to be fixed but we have upside that people , don't rate.

Coffield , Jack Hayes , Hunter Clark - have not fired a shot due to bad injuries and just having these will give us added depth.

Guy's like Billings and Jones missed the best part of the year and will surely improve next season and then we look at the improvement in the young guys like Sharman , Windhager , Owens , Milera being another season bigger and stronger.

Higgins is a small forward who kicks goal's and the first one we have had since Milne , if he never copped the head knocks his season would of been very impressive.

Marshall goes back as the lone ruckman that he excels at.

Gresham get's his 2nd season under his belt which should or could take it to even a higher level.
Max King our 22yr old who just kicked 52 goals and 41 points , only has to convert a little bit better and we win more.

Apart from all this we only had really 4 players who gave a good account the whole season - Steele , Crouch , Sinclair and Wilkie , so we add another 2 or 3 players to that list and we will be on our way to where we want to be.

On top of all of this we go to the draft with all our picks a first for a while.

Let it be known DeGoey would of fast tracked us to top 4 , but we have the talent to lift far higher than were we currently are and we are far from last atm.
You forgot to mention we lost the D-Train for the last 2 months of the year as well. As soon as he went down we turned to shit.
