I can think of numerous other positions we need to improve in other than the half back flank. If he arrives I'll wish him well...but won't be at all surprised when he decides he prefers his natural game and hops on a plane mid contract.
If his arrival means Hill never plays in the backline again then it's a success

I’m still bullish on Leo Connelly. Uses the ball well enough, has speed and takes the game on. Would love to see him off half back releasing Hill/Sincs into the middle.
Doubt he even gets a game next year bar lots of injuries

100%. Flawed logic from Bucks IMO.

Maybe more 98% flawed, there is planning and list management decisions made around taking a player who would be in the best 22. If he was to go home after a year or two, it upsets planning and structures. To me it's very low risk, I'd say if he's come back he's probably realised that there aren't too many opportunities to have a similar career back in Ireland. At 26 he's probably matured and more likely to be in for the long haul. You should be able to get a good gauge of his commitment from interviews.

I can see him becoming a regular.

It will help if we pull Hill and Sincs out of the back 6. Coffield looks certain to take up a back 6 spot. Clark is a hard one to know what to do with. Connolly isn't as talented but he's a more natural rebound defender with good kicking and run. Restructuring the side could get a really big increase in quality.

Connolly probably has to step past Webster to get a regular spot still. Jimmy has had a pretty bad run with injury over the years so Leo should be playing his arse off biding his time at Sandy. If he can get in he might be able to lock in his spot.

So?

He would cost us no picks.
If he leaves he will forego remainder of salary.
If he leaves we will regain a list spot.

Where’s the risk for us?
He's not a need. Better off using the spot on something we need. We've decried our over abundant half back flank stocks for years...and now we're getting excited on a flight risk that plays that very same position. You guys are ****ing mental...and I like that about the majority of you...but this shit is certifiable lunacy and I have to draw the line somewhere.

Why is he a flight risk more than just about any other player?

Nah pop in for wine at Adelaide, dinner in Brisbane but most importantly staying overnight at RSEA Park.

Ken: So what do you think of Adelaide, we think its a great Australian city.
Conor : I mostly only know Melbourne but i heard that Adelaide is nice, will you be taking me to see the City Centre.
Ken: We uh...that is... you know that mall we walked down at lunch time?

So can I, but at the moment how many quality mids and key forwards are available as DFA's?

None. That's why I think we should hold. Just because something is available doesn't mean we need to pick it up. Our strike rate with DFA's has been traumatizing. Get best available in the National draft, and then do a Rookie or Supplementary special with players that for the team dynamics. Surely there are guys knocking about the state and Bush leagues worth a shot. Diamonds in the rough are better and more valuable than want away emeralds.

He'd be a higher risk given he has already walked away once.

I think it's worth the risk given he would cost nothing but you'd be taking him on accepting that in 12 months time, he might do it again.

2020 was a funny time though. It wasn't just Irish guys who struggled.

We must remember he is not costing us anything than a list spot and the one way to fix his flight risk is to have incen tives in place for he to play out each entire season.

Could be a modern Jason Gram?

He literally has to take a flight...there are no buses, trains, or car pools to Ireland from Melbourne.

For a man who's made his life in the Emerald Isle you don't like the Irish boys much Tommy.

Huh? He can hold down the Sinclair or Hill spot, Sincs to the mids and Hill to the wing.
Lyon is looking for run across all lines, that is a solution to HB, wing and pace through the mids.
Can't see the issue here.

Might be less of a risk now that he has worked out what code he really wants to play and knows he isn't going to get rich at home
