Salary dumps are here to stay IMO. Honestly, it makes a lot of sense in the AFL landscape.

Sure, it helps the teams that are already at the top, but they are essentially mortgaging off their future. It also helps the bottom teams build up quality playing lists faster.

Look back at the last 10 years, would you have rather that we pay guys like Billings $800k, guys like Bruce, Webster, Newnes $600k just to make sure we reached the minimum cap? I would have preferred we could have paid them their market rate and use our surplus cap space to bring in more draft picks.
Agree. But if nobody wants to come to a club in the current year they should be able to bank the savings so we can blow the 'destination clubs' out of the water in the next year.

St Kilda forward ended contracts on mediocre players because it had to, not because it wanted to.

Not against the salary dumps but you probably should be able to project your salary to be pretty close to what it should be not be projecting to be 1.5mil over like GC are
You shouldn't be able to make any signing that takes your projected salary over the cap IMO. If this isn't already the case it should be.

Surely that 1.5-2M number comes from uncontracted players that they want to sign but are currently unable.

You can do this to a degree already but I would like to see them scrap the minimum TPP requirement all together. The AFLPA won't like it, but surely the minimum individual payment requirements should be enough, why does it matter to an individual player what their teams collective salary is.

Imagine if we could have spent $1m per year on extra recruiting and development staff instead of overpaying duds.

We’re already seeing the same teams competing over and over again. If Cats pull off as above I can’t see us winning a cup for a long time.
NBA/MLB type sh*t.
Just coincidentally ties in with the AFL's biggest money spinning clubs. West Coast will get a hand up soon if their poor showing starts affecting revenue in the west.

Might need to bring back the cost of living allowance and apply it to Geelong.
Houses are cheaper in the country so they get less salary cap

Go back 15 years .... we were in exactly the same situation as the Cats. They were diabolical and in huge trouble.

They have gone one way and made alot of good decisions, we however have made more bad decisions than good.

TBH, we only have ourselves to blame.

15 years ago there was no free agency.

I agree however, it’s a double whammy.

Since 2015 every club has been in a preliminary final with the exception of Carlton, Essendon, Gold Coast and St Kilda.

Carlton and Essendon can offer as many under the table payments as any team in the league.

Players only want to go to good clubs, if you want to attract good players you need to become a good club.

Just protects the top clubs and gets a lot of average players very well paid. Norf paid pretty close to what Geelong did, yeah that makes sense.

Correct.
Obviously it’s harder when everyone of quality is only wanting to go to top 4 teams.
As always, we’ve timed it to perfection.

We lost more than the GF in 97, 04, 09/10. Has cost us very very dearly.
The lesson for me is that you can't mortgage your clubs future for a single shot at a flag like we did in the 2009 off-season.

You're better off having longer window with multiple opportunities, and this can only be done by continually returning to the draft table.

I would love to see it become a part of our ethos that we always maintain a rolling average of at least 3 top 30 selections over two years.

Now with Port getting compo for Amon, we're down to 12th on the list of draft points for this year.

Doesn't feel quite right considering we need a serious infusion of youth.

Improving this is the only thing that matters

We have missed out on all the top talent moving clubs. So it has to come from the draft this summer. Which means we need better and more picks

Jeez, while still being able to hold on to this year's first round pick.

They will have essentially had the sort of "mini rebuild" we've been hoping for... would be a great accomplishment for an undeniably brilliant club.

Makes it a hell of a lot easier when these brilliant clubs are able to use different avenues other than a salary cap...

We have a chance for Free agency if our team shows promise.

We have completely flatlined for three years, don't show up on the big stage, play an awful brand of football at times.

Players want to come to a successful club, if we had of made the finals last season... this trade season would have been completely different.

But NO ... we finished 3-8 for the last half of the year.

Unless players see us making decent/substantial changes to our club, then Free Agency will be a challenge.

Thank you for explaining my point back to me in a less succinct, unnecessary way xoxo

They are picking up a bunch of kids that have not been able to get games at other clubs , is not any way a mini rebuild - pick 7 would be handy - there next pick would be in late teens at best - and then you have to look at how many players will be finishing in the next 3 0r 4 years - half of there best 22.
Suppose we will see if any of there kids they pick up will be still at the club.

Everything has been mighty fine but the Selwoods , Hawkins , Dangerfields , Smiths , Bilcav's have made it that way - the thing is now they have to find players with the same ability to stay there , even Cameron is about to hit 30 and picking reject kids from other clubs will not get replacements for there stars.

We have the ability to really push in the next few years having replenished our list and having most of our best players yet to turn 27 and with King , Higgins , Owens , Windhager , Milera , Sharman , Coffield.

The DeGoey trade would of fast tracked our flag push , knowing currently we are on the cusp of finals with a team with massive upside.
Maybe Kevin Sheedy can take over our list management
I would say no , After what they where given at GWS and could never win a flag.
