List Mgmt. 2022 Trade Thread - Part III

Fair.

But not having a readymade KPD to fill in the hole if Dougal cops a niggle would be incompetence. Cooper Sharman cannot fill that hole either.
I get that

But we have had this hole now for a few years and have had plenty of time to get list profile in a better spot then it is

There is a reason we have finished 10th & 10th we do a lot of things poorly

So Melican, Ratugolea, Hartigan, or Cordy, huh?

Be still my beating heart… 😏

Apart from the Essendon news today's reading has been horrific and darkly depressing

I doubt this trade thread could plumb to a lower depth

There is tomorrow I guess
It’s really not that bad so long as there’s a second part to this then the strategy is fine. Cordy is a decent if uninspiring defender who will do the job and Mitchell is a ball magnet. Add those 2 and a decent run with injuries and a spot in the 8 is realistic. The kicker is we need more early draft picks to move our development forward. Hell I’ll put it out there that Mitchell will have imo as much impact on our side as DeGoey would have. I think if we were adding 2 first rounders I’d be pretty happy.

We were always going to pick up a stop gap mature key back - Steven May was not available so Cordy it is - he may well win the Zebras B&F - Break Glass in case of emergency player.

For those saying we should take Ethan Phillips instead we can't just take him he will be in the draft with the other 17 clubs if we prioritised picking him we would probably need to use pick 28 to ensure we got him later than that and he is likely gone to someone else.

I don't rate Cordy but on the plus side the Doggies defensive game is a shambles Bevo places all his eggs into winning the midfield and if they don't their defense is totally exposed. Maybe Enright can use him better.

Also doesn't mean we should overlook Buslinger or Hayes or Phillips if they fall at the right spot in the draft we need a better long term solution than Cordy.

Have a vague memory we bid on Cordy in his draft year when he was Father Son?

So the alternative would be to keep taking players when every other club has stopped drafting in a draft that is not considered deep...

Most are saying that outside the top 30 the draft is considered very weak.
I don’t agree with that at all, let’s see where this draft rates in 5 years time. What it lacks is obvious superstars at the top end, Imo you’ll still be picking quality at 40+ and there will be plenty after that who will surprise as well.

Reading this thread is depressing as a poster said a while ago. And Saints fans on Twitter and Facebook seem ready to slash wrists.

We fans have been mostly saying that we need to draft the best we can in the next few years. Last year was a great start with the three main picks looking very promising. This after years of mostly botched attempts.

I am glad we aren’t chucking away our first two picks just to show ‘we are doing something’. If we did, come draft time we have nothing. Because we haven’t drafted well we have no trade capital. So no extra picks to play with. We all know that.

I don’t see why everyone is so frustrated. Who do you suggest we trade for, and what would we be giving away? That’s why Hill and Clark came into the frame. And Long of course, although last I heard he seemed to maybe backtrack.

I am quite comfortable waiting for the draft, getting some cheap positional needs, and waiting for something to fall out like Treloar did a couple of years ago. All we have done for years is chase our tail going for the quick fix and giving too much away.

I am all for growing our own. We mucked up so many years it is going to take a bit of time as frustrating as that is in the short term. Patience is hard but I frankly do not see another way.

Geelong for example are where they are because they have got more right than wrong and have been consistently doing it for years and years. Yes, they got F/S luck. But they are carefully managed. Our current guys are coming from a long way back…..sadly.

And you never know. Something may be cooking that we just don’t know about. Unlikely, but possible.

ST KILDA'S hunt for key-position depth has narrowed on Western Bulldogs defender Zaine Cordy, after previously enquiring about in-demand Cat Esava Ratugolea and delisted Hawk Kyle Hartigan.
While the Saints have Dougal Howard and Cal Wilkie in defence, aside from Josh Battle, Brett Ratten is light on for options in the event of injury and desperate for depth.
INDICATIVE DRAFT ORDER Every club's hand as it stands
AFL.com.au understands that the club showed interest in Ratugolea and Hartigan in the second half of the season, as well as contracted Swan Lewis Melican who didn't play a senior game in 2022 but has 52 games of AFL experience next to his name.
AFL.com.au's Inside Trading flagged St Kilda's interest in Cordy on Monday.
Ratugolea is contracted for next year and was initially expected to remain at Geelong and fight for a spot, but the swingman has attracted interested from multiple clubs and appears increasingly likely to land at a new home.

Hartigan wasn’t offered a new contract after two seasons at the Hawks, following 22 games at Waverley Park after 113 for Adelaide, and was considered an option but that interest is believed to have cooled.
The 25-year-old Cordy has a two-year deal on the table to remain at the Whitten Oval, but has been considering his options after the Bulldogs signed Liam Jones, with belief growing that St Kilda can land the 2016 premiership player.

You don't have to agree with it, but that's what recruiters and draft experts are saying about the draft

Mitchell is 29 years old and the exact same player that Crouch is.

We need elite mids and he is on the decline and lacks one thing that we lack and that is a point of difference when it comes to Steele/Crouch/Ross. We need to be getting as many games into Owens/Windhager and seeing if Bytel can make it or not.

I would rather we not take players like Mitchell/Cordy and give our players an opportunity and look to hit the draft. We aren't winning the flag next year let's face facts.

We need to see if players like Byrnes/Bytel are actually any good to compliment Mitch and Marcus.

Getting another 20 odd games as genuine mids next year for Mitch/Marcus/Nas could actually fast track us in 2023. If the mids are good enough they will come in and make an impact ala our 3 boys.

This Zaine Cordy business would be a major coup, if we get him in we could hopefully get him to convince his brother to come to us as well. Imagine an Ayce-Zaine combo, we would be unstoppable.

Depends who you talk to I guess but I’ve heard this quite a few times and it’s mostly been wrong. Anyway I’m suggesting we swap out next years for a top 10 at worst hopefully as low as 5, after that I wouldn’t do it.

We can take as many picks as we need in the National Draft.

If we delist Lienert and Bytel and trade Long, we will have 8 open spots. If we want we can take 8 picks, we would be allocated 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th round picks.

They just aren't talked about because after the 3rd round, picks have no value whatsoever.

Personally I’d keep Lienert and Bytel, (6 list spots). Sign Cordy, I would trade for Mitchell, just because I think there is value in him, but I would make it clear it’s pick 27 or you can go elsewhere. Sign Dow with a future 4th or a future 3rd with a future 4th fourth coming back. I’ve given up on Bowes sadly. Take our first to the draft, would consider splitting on draft night with GWS for 12 and 19 or Sydney with 14 and 17 if our players we like are gone. Take our third rounder and pick someone is slipping or a mature aged recruit, would consider not using this pick and taking Stocker and/or Ely Smith in the rookie draft or as DFAs.

If we spilt our pick or use 45 we might have to leave one of Stocker or Smith, (would delist Lienert in that case to take both.

If we spilt our pick AND use 45 then we would have to leave both or delist Lienert and take one of Stocker or Smith, I’d take Stocker, but if this is the plan it would have to be a real slider at 45.

I’D RESIGN BYTEL NOW. Lienert has to wait till after the draft.
