The 2nd half of the drawn GF we lined up with Gilbert forward, Kosi in the ruck, Roo on the wing, Milne out of the square, Goddard on ball...

But over the years we saw Blake play ruck and KPD, Goddard all three zones, Dal and Joey played wing, half forward and half back week to week, Schneider got some on ball minutes, Dempster would play a defensive forward role some weeks.

Yes, most players had a set role but that's because they were really good at it.

I'd expect much the same next year.

There will be 15 blokes who are just set and forget but there will also be a few guys that could line up in different roles depending on form and the opposition.

CMac has traditionally been a hbf option, but I could see Ross throwing him on ball now and then for a different look. Probably not at a centre bounce, but around the ground he could charge through the pack with the aim of grabbing the ball and taking off.

Risky play but if it only happens once or twice a game it keeps the opposition on their toes every time he's near the ball.

I think that Ratts' biggest failing was that, outside of trying to get Brad Hill up to 30 touches a game, we didn't seem to change anything based on the opposition or the momentum of the game.

Members to CHB isn't game breaking and it's not going to have the opposition scrambling to work out what to do.

I think Ross is going to get pretty aggressive on game day and we will be much better for it.

Membrey to the backline used to drive me nuts because whenever he did it it worked pretty well…..so why in gods name wouldn’t you just START with an extra in the backline instead of using our second best goal kicker down there when the game was almost lost. Defence was just something Ratten could never figure out.

Surely McKenzie stays on the wing ( and by that I mean the modern wing role where they have to run all day to support the backs and forwards), a role he has excelled in recently and for which he has all the tools .

Whereas I have seen little to suggest that he can suddenly become an inside mid.

Plus Lyon has stated that we need the outside run and pace, and Dmac ticks both boxes.

IMO the first thing ross would stop selection wise would be Hill to the HBF, i think he gets Hill back to his best on the wing.

i also think sinclair spending a pre-season in the middle is a no brainer.

ross needs to find two more options for HBF. he needs a genuine hard noses lock down defender and an attacking half back flanker. patton will get the gig in the pocket. wilkie the third tall. howard/cordy the FB/CHB. i think someone like howard could go much better under ross.

it will be interesting where he sees mckenzie who i do believe is perfect fit for ross as a coach. i think we will see McKenzie on one wing and hill on the other. sinclair into the middle.

hunter clarke will get the whip, not sure what way that one will go.

Looks like we are bit way back in the Connor McKenna race, shame
this is one of things we've sucked at. we always seem to be coming to the party VERY late. like they catch wind its happening in the media then try and get in on the act.

forgive me if i have missed it, but what about trying someone like Zac Jones in either a lock down role or i think a more realistic scenario would be returning him to the HBF. he has some good speed and a good attack on the ball. his kicking is an issue but i feel that could be better coached than when he is in the guts. most of his issues tend to be when he doesnt have space or when he isnt seeing the play downfield coming at him.

so it could be sinclair and jones simply swap positions

The thing is that RTB has a demonstrated history of using blokes for what they're good at and getting the best out of them. IDGAF now about who makes the cut because l have faith in selection and standards.
I also think our list is alright in that there are no real spuds or deadwood types still there.

for me i think we need to move away from this "it is what it is" mantra. there literally has been no accountability and we've been far too casual in accepting what ever was presented and then proceeded to extend any deadlines or expectation.

im hoping even though i dont think ross will work and its a desperate hail mary attempt, that he can instill some standard and an environment where there is accountability.

we dont need 5 years to make calls on coaches like we did richo. 3 should be ample time.

hopefully if ross doesn't work out, he can atleast instill some kind of professionalism in the group.

Several Irish over here agree with me too by the way...so it has nothing to do with me being anti-Irish like I was accused of the last time for voicing my opinion on Gaelic players crossing codes (my views on THAT topic remain unchanged) For what it's worth one of the guys I was talking to claims to have some sort of link with McKenna's mob (but they always say that sort of thing, so take it with a big pinch of salt)

Totally agree. He played well there at the Swans and I think his kicking is overblown.

I suspect all of that is exactly why he was hired. Though from a supporters position we can do little else than accept it or vote with our wallets.

As a free agent I can't see why it wouldn't be worth the risk
I can think of numerous other positions we need to improve in other than the half back flank. If he arrives I'll wish him well...but won't be at all surprised when he decides he prefers his natural game and hops on a plane mid contract.

So?

He would cost us no picks.
If he leaves he will forego remainder of salary.
If he leaves we will regain a list spot.

Where’s the risk for us?
