So?

He would cost us no picks.
If he leaves he will forego remainder of salary.
If he leaves we will regain a list spot.

Where’s the risk for us?
Probably on minimum coin anyway.

He was 4th in the BnF in 2019 and has 3 clubs chasing him and relocating from Ireland.
If it was me i wouldn't choose the club who offered me minimum coin.

Might be less of a risk now that he has worked out what code he really wants to play and knows he isn't going to get rich at home
Think you're spot on about the money being the enticing factor to stay with AFL this time. As long as you don't front load the contract, there isn't much to lose by offering him one.

That was 3 years ago. And he hasn't played recently.
OK maybe not minumum, but doubt he's going to cost a fortune.

I think he'd expect a fair bit of money to entice him over. He would have been on decent money at Essendon.

For a left field idea. We could pick up Jared Polec or Seedsman while North and Adelaide are trying to put them on the rookie list. Go the Mancad on them just to teach them a lesson.

I look away for a few weeks and the trade thread has been revived and we want to pickup Polec? Dear god

I think Polec is gone gone and North are planning on eating his salary.

They are doing the rookie list spill. I was just being silly, we aren't going to chase either but clubs take the piss delisting and rookie listing players. Someone should Mancad a player at some point. It would stop it quickly.

North did it with Greenwood last year, and clubs don't seem to be turned off. Seems to be a regulatory failure.

I'd say we're a pretty good shot at landing the Irishman. One of the first things rtb said was that he wanted speed as a weapon. We can make a good pitch to McKenna that there's a spot there for him on the back flank allowing us to free up Sinclair into the middle. He'd be valued straight away, and you'd think be able to play to his strengths. Throw in the bj connection and I reckon tomjoad might have something to worry about.

Doesn't it work as designed? They don't want players to be able to be demoted to a rookie list without having the option of going somewhere better. If you see a player get delisted with the intention of being re-rookied, you can get in his ear and convince him he'd be better off with you. It doesn't happen much because most players in that situation are shit.

we'll know within a week or so

I reckon Greenwood, Polec and Seedsman are good players. If they came for free they would be pretty handy depth at a minimum. Probably get a Zac Jones level player for zero capital.

None. That's why I think we should hold. Just because something is available doesn't mean we need to pick it up. Our strike rate with DFA's has been traumatizing. Get best available in the National draft, and then do a Rookie or Supplementary special with players that for the team dynamics. Surely there are guys knocking about the state and Bush leagues worth a shot. Diamonds in the rough are better and more valuable than want away emeralds.
I doubt there are many state league players out there with the talent he has.

Even if there was, there's nothing stopping us from taking them as we have 6 open list spots, not one.

As for the traumatizing DFA's, I was pretty happy with Roberton until he got struck down and Membrey is ticking along alright.

Even Wood has turned out alright

Had a fair few Irish temps at my work over the past few months, finally asked one the other day why. Apparently inflation and cost of living is absolutely out of control, enough so that flying to the other side of the world is a preferable option to many. Might help us hang onto McKenna.

Connor Blakely any good?

Huh? He can hold down the Sinclair or Hill spot, Sincs to the mids and Hill to the wing.
Lyon is looking for run across all lines, that is a solution to HB, wing and pace through the mids.
Can't see the issue here.
It's not really an issue. I just don't think it's a need either. If we need run, then I think we can find better elsewhere. Z.Jones could be an okay half back.

The GAA guys are usually well looked after. They don't get "paid" but they all seem to do quite well. Ireland and Europe in general is going through the motions. Tough couple of years ahead....again 🙄

I guess I'm just not as sold on his talent as others. As for trades, I was thinking more recent history...the McKernan, Frawley types along with some of the other guys we've had. Roberton was a sad situation could've/ should've been AA. Wood admittedly has been a genuine surprise, and Membrey I don't count, as he was like a new recruit that we managed to snare from a good system.
If McKenna gets to us, plays well and proves that he can see out a contract, then I'll concede...until then I intend to yell madly from my mountain at the passing clouds.

Yep, there’s some of the usual over inflating of Essendon players going on. I still think we could use the pace, I’m just not going to expect a huge amount.

McKenna is completely different to the Frawley/McKernan types.

He's not an aging player past his peak.

It's also worth noting he was never actually delisted. He left on his own accord after being top 3 in Essendons best and fairest.

Sounds unlikely we land him but if we did he clearly improves our list immediately
