AFL draft buzz: Latest first-round whispers as Melbourne eyes Western Australian talent

A Victorian club has made an 8000km round trip to interview two of Western Australia’s best draft prospects in a move which could have huge implications for how the first round plays out.

Melbourne is circling key tall Daniel Curtin and made the 8000km round trip to interview his Western Australian livewire teammate Koltyn Tholstrup.
The Demons are in a strong position to land Curtin as a flexible key position player who could emerge as the long-term replacement for 31-year-old Steven May.

The Hawks will have the first call on the 195cm Curtin at pick four but could instead pick up exciting small forward Nick Watson, while the Bulldogs like midfielder Ryley Sanders at five.

It means the Demons could land Curtin at six and then take exciting forward-midfielder Koltyn Tholstrup at 11 after visiting him in Esperance in regional WA last week.
Gun recruiter Jason Taylor is believed to have flown to Perth and then taken a light plane to the southern tip of WA to meet the 188cm goal kicker and his parents. It is understood the Demons are the only club to have made the mega trip down to Tholstrup’s hometown to interview the popular and physical game winner.

urtin could also help compensate for the potential departure of Harry Petty if Adelaide is successful in bringing the South Australian tall home.

But several live trades on draft night could yet shake-up the order as rivals including Adelaide (pick 10) and Sydney (12) zero in on pick seven from GWS Giants.

Essendon (pick nine) has targeted key defender Connor O’Sullivan, but Adelaide and Sydney are plotting a move up the order to land O’Sullivan first and pip the Bombers if they can get seven.

Geelong is eyeing powerful forward Nate Caddy at pick eight to help secure a replacement for Tom Hawkins.

If GWS complete a deal with Adelaide to slide back to pick 10, the Giants could secure classy outside midfielder Caleb Windsor at 10.

The Demons also have Windsor in the mix to help bolster their transition game, but would be ecstatic to secure Tholstrup if Windsor is already gone. Versatile Tasmanian defender James Leake could also bolt into the top-10, while Geelong is also considering Murray midfielder Darcy Wilson and Essendon has kept tabs on WA defender Riley Hardeman if the Bombers slide back into the teens.
**** O’Sullivan would want to be good given are likely to get Petty

And we ignore the midfield at the top end when wilson is there
It does read as if we won't be getting Essendons pick for 14 and 20 and therefore COS and Wilson.
But that's a conflicting report to other news in past 24 hours so who knows.

It does look like the draft is moving towards..

1. Reid (WC)
2. Walter (GC)
3. McKercher (North)
4. Duursma (North)
5. Watson/Curtin (Hawks)
6. Sanders (Dogs)
7. Watson/Curtin/Leake (Demons)
8. Read (GC)
9. Windsor/Leake/Watson (GWS)
10. Caddy/Leake/Wilson (Cats)
11. OSullivan/Leake (Essendon)
12. Wilson/Leake (Adelaide)

So unless we can find a way to get Essendons pick 9 without giving up 10 we don't get both.

More guesswork from a journo trying to create a perception they are ‘in the know’

It will come back in after academy bids - maybe even into the late 20's (of the available players outside the academy and f/s kids) - and you'd think if we wanted a ruck, we will get one or maybe a risk on Moir?
The only risk with picking up Moir is if he has the motivation and desire to play at the top level?
Based on his skill set and talent he's all upside

I'm warming to Leake as we get closer, can play round 1, forward or back, could go into the mid as much as Dawson or Day did this year.

Yeah me too, the film on this kid is good. I can see him developing into an elite big bodied mid in time. We get him on a 3 year contract with time to stitch him up on a long term deal. I am not so worried as some about Tassie kids being a flight risk as Adelaide is really just a big country town so they fit in well. Worst case he turns into a star and he goes back to Tassie in which case he will be worth a good compo deal.

If he has been injured this year and he has alluded to that, then a fully fit Moir might be a very different proposition to what we saw this year and be more akin to the guy being spoken about as a top 5 pick last year

Yeah same

Spewing if we don’t get at least one of O’Sullivan , Wilson , Leake
I have a weird feeling Leake might be our pick if he makes it past GWS (and COS isn’t there)

I’d be sad if we passed up on Wilson for him, but on pure value for money I’d like the pick

Just would have to hope we’re not investing too heavily in medium defenders

A medium defender from Tasmania. Haggis won’t be able to control himself.

Don’t worry re the defender thing as he can play anywhere and likely will

Bit like peoples original thoughts on Will Day and even Dawson
