Everyone I like magically goes from within our pick range to 5-10 spots too high on Twomey's power rankings of doom

I WILL REMEMBER U MCKERCHER COLLARD AND LEAKE 💔
If it's any consolation, at this rate, by November they will have only been available to draft last year.

With the rumoured changes to bench/sub rules next year to allow 5 on the bench with no sub, reckon I'd be pretty wrapped with this line up going forward

Williams Weitering Marchbank/Kemp
Saad Mcgovern Newman
Acres Cripps O.Hollands
Durdin Mckay E.Hollands
Collard
Curnow Martin
Dekoning Cerra Walsh

Silvagni Docherty Cuningham Cottrell Leake/Edwards

I just don’t understand this.

At 5 on the bench, you will get the same whinging we got when there wasn’t a sub, clubs will complain if they get an injury that they are down a rotation.

Unless it’s paired with further reducing interchange numbers I don’t get it.

I think clubs realise that the cap in rotations dramatically decreases the disadvantage of injuries with more players on the bench.

What’s peoples thoughts on the Stevens kid?

Missed most of 2022 and 2023

But his second half of 23 looks big, captain of the AIS side.

Any U/18 kid who can play VFL and get 29 touched s has plenty of upside.

Always felt the same. Find the whole argument odd.

Also, I suspect the more you have on the bench the more it helps the best sides. Top teams will have a pretty good player in that 23rd position, meaning they can rotate all their players more. Bottom teams won't have that luxury. Their 23rd player will be someone they want to use as little as possible.

I prefer 5 on bench to sub but only because I play supercoach and the sub rule is a nightmare for that.

Any chance the club wants to try and address our lack of scoring from turnover by selecting a running defender or back half players?

Or would this improve mostly with game plan?
I would argue our back half players are mostly fine and that it's actually our forward half players and midfielders that are to blame for our poor turnover game.

Most of our best users are in our back half but imo we play a fairly straight line brand of football due to our poor running power across half forward.

Through the midfield too?

This draft will be interesting, I think Austin really targeted a need last rather than trying to fix everything.

I wonder if he will do similar this year.

I still think there will be a few curve balls come draft night, I hope we take 3 players.

I think Zac back for start of the season and the games into Boyd in finals pushes the need back a little. Marchbank did well in the last couple of games but he's a bit of a handbrake on the speed of our ball movement.

Looks like the epitome of "too strong for the other kids, not athletic enough for the big time". I reckon he'll be another Will Brodie or Charlie Constable. Put up good numbers at VFL level for a few years, rarely get the opportunity at senior level because his club/coach can't fit in a slow, one-dimensional mid.

If he lands at the right club, he might get some game time. But I reckon it's more likely he's on-traded for peanuts in 2-4 years to a club who just need a budget on-baller while they rebuild.

If we're looking at a midfielder, I like this guy:

A few of the more pertinent snippets:

Playing most of his best junior football in midfield, Simpson is an on-baller with points of difference. His turn of speed gets him out of tight spots and is a weapon through the centre corridor, or even when stepping clear for shots on goal. Scoreboard impact is another string to Simpson's bow, as he averaged nearly one goal per game across two Coates Talent League seasons.

He boasts clean and quick hands on the inside, often collecting with one touch and dishing the ball off in a flash. He works hard on his skills and prides himself on such traits.

I think he could bring a bit of what we liked to see from Dow, with a better level of defensive intent. Not the finished product yet, and certainly some things to work on, but for a pick around 30 he could be worth selecting with a view to having him ready in a few years time.

In terms of how they play they couldn't be further apart unfortunately. Pretty ordinary user of the footy and more of a junkyard dog type. Think James Worpel with a bit better speed.
I get more John Noble vibes. I rate him highly. He's kicking is average, not terrible. Also Doc just turned 30, Saad and Williams are 29. Wouldn't hurt to plan ahead.

Cal has him at 21 now in his power rankings also. Clubs rate him just outside the first round it seems.

Looks slow to me. Very slow. Would be interesting to see how he tested at the combine.

Think we have plenty of runners, Boyd, Saad, Williams, Doc, Cotts, Hollands x 2, Walsh, Acres if they stay on the park

I'd still focus on forward half/mids impact players in the draft

Mostly gameplan

I like Simpson, might last to the back end of the draft
