Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

Not sure Mckercher is our guy. Id love to find out his kicking efficiency for the game on the weekend. Just seems like he misses targets too often and his handballs are a bit loopy if that makes sense.

Watson is top of my list for now. He's useless if the ball is in the air but if he gets an opportunity at ground level watch out. It's always either a goal, a free kick for or a clean pick up.

Also a great set shot kick.
Watson's very good in the air. Takes speccies and his contested marking is a renowned strength. At AFL level will obviously struggle with that more than U18s but its by no means a weakness of his. Freakish vertical leap.

Really? Haven't seen much of that. If you have time please link a few vids. If that's true it would solidify him in my mind a lot.

Eh theres a couple in here

Theres others out there, but most would be digging through stuff from last year or videos from School footy. This year he's been playing more midfield and half back to show recruiters his flexibility.

But he is very much a Tom Papley type in that he's more like a marking full forward whos 170cm tall than a Kozi Pickett. Most of his goals are from leads where he's simply too quick for his defender. Another draft watcher mentioned that he tested a 93cm vert this year which would be classified elite by most standards in the AFL

Taking risks shouldn’t be the answer. And if it is, we’re asking the wrong question.

A massive no to trading any of our top echelon.
Not being willing to take risks is not being able to come to terms with the fact that our list is not up to the standard.

The facts are this:
  • We have a lack of young talent coming through other than Hollands, Cowan and possibly Motlop (Please don't say blokes like Honey and Carroll, they're not up to it)
  • We have a lack of depth beyond our starting 22.
  • The 22 that we do have is not an even mix/spread in comparison to other AFL teams. We lack a mix of speed and skill.
  • Slowest midfield in the AFL, constantly caught out on the outside. Was glaringly obvious on the weekend V Essendon.
We have to trade out someone with value in a position we have excess in which would be one of our "big bodied, slow midfielders"

Sitting on our hands will get us no where but another year of pain and suffering.

Durdin, Binns, Lemmey?

There is a big difference between taking an unnecessary risk and "sitting on our hands". You're going from one extreme to the other here.

If the fresh reports in the media that we're quite likely to land Gresham are true, then Mckercher looks a more likely pick as someone to fix our speed and spread deficiencies in the midfield.

Walsh Cerra Mckercher Cripps Kennedy... I'd still like a more Xfactor type who could push through there such as Duursma, but Gresham can play through there better than someone like Fisher.

If we went down that route I'd still be in favour of Wilson as a secondary pick to play on a half forward line or Philactides down back/wing.

We are getting Gresham?

Kemp Weitering Cowan
Philactides Young Saad
Acres Cripps Hollands
Gresham Mckay Wilson
Durdin Curnow Motlop
Pittonet Walsh Cerra

Mckercher Boyd Docherty Silvagni

Those are 3 names I expect we'd look at if we were to get 3 top 20ish picks. Mckercher top 5, Wilson 10-15 and Philactides 15-20.

Don't feel like that would shift the needle significantly enough for us to all of the sudden look a top 4 team but it would certainly help within a few years of development. Add a Watson or Duursma to that mix too and things look very different but would require two top 5 picks for Mckercher and one of them, pretty unlikely barring a major star leaving.

Perhaps someone like Cumberland too given his age and speed to replace an Owies or Motlop and require closer attention from opposition. Could get him for a 2nd rounder I reckon.

Not certain our environment is suited for a player like Gresham, talented , but CFC a little dysfunctional, haphazard at present.
One would have concerns re his durability too has missed quite a bit of footy, in recent past.
Could it be Ross & Stephen plotting to pull wool over our eyes? If the rumor is spot on surely Austin would apply correct due diligence?

You lost me at young if he gets a game we are never playing finals

KPD duos take time to adjust to playing with each other. Jones was an absolute liability in I think 2019 if my memories correct. Was so far off his man trying to intercept that you could have mistaken him for playing in the forward line some games.

Weiters and he worked it out in the end and ended up a great partnership. If Young and Weiters can't salvage things and work together then Ben Mckay is always an option for Austin.

Regardless, draft thread is more to do with the kids coming through and players we might be into that would change what kids we pick. I'd be extremely surprised if we're even considering a KPP prospect outside of maybe Nate Caddy this draft.

Think we'd have to look at an intercept defender given the likely departure of Gov and Marchy.

Curtin is the best at that but he'll be top 6-7. Next best would be Patton whos a SA boy, think he's 191 or 192cm and has a booming kick on rebound, more like Cowan.

193cm.

Connor O’Sullivan 198cm Defensive leaning swingman rising up the charts is probably the realistic option in the tall defensive sphere. Love Curtin, but should go at the pointy end and is a bit like Weitering in that he would be better as an interceptor. More athletic than Weiters if he did get to our range.

TBF, we are currently at the pointy end.

It'll be interesting to see where we end up finishing, there should be some genuine difference makers available at our pick the way we're going - just please, no more hbf unless we clear the decks first.
