So much for the big announcement from the club later this week 🤣

Welcome on board to Matt Duffy and Rob Monahan. And of course they'll look even better in navy blue.

Love that we are getting creative in List Management. Draft is compromised, exacerbated further by Tassie inclusion. Rising fortunes means lower picks.

The Irish pool hadn’t been tapped significantly in a while, let’s see what’s there…

Well done team.

DeMattia might be one for us?
Thought he looked okay at times in the U18 Champs. He's got a burst of speed out of stoppages, but doesn't seem to be an accumulator.

Personally I'd prefer a Delean or Sanchez, or even Tholstrup if he's still on the board. I guess it depends what type of player Austin and his crew are looking for.

Tholstrup if he actually keeps drifting in the draft has some appeal at our pick. He has plenty of talent and he has a mature body and robust game plan. He could certainly become a great Fogarty styled replacement, with midfielder potential moving forward.

What happened to Moir? Was highly rated at one stage...

If we got a mid to late second rounder would he slide that far?

Don't pay too much attention to his rankings, he has way too many rucks and talls in that list. Someone like Moir is every chance to be drafted higher on the day.

Historically, tall draftee's would have to be the highest risk of disappointing, Austin's team are proving themselves to be fairly uncanny with their selections.
Happy to go with 1 draft pick and the Irish, then try and hold on to most of our present list.

Yup, sounds like a good year to try a different approach

Saw the game he played with the U/18s v our 2s. Looked like he didn't want the footy. Similar story coming out of the champs.

I think that covers the ā€œpossiblesā€ if we are looking at the forward/mid hybrid type at our pick.

DeMattia is untidy and super raw game wise, but is recognised as a leader. He looks to be the one if the group with the greatest potential to elevate his game. Has a good deal of dash and could end up in any third of the ground or even inside ultimately.

Delean has the best highlight reel and is a goal kicker. I very much question his defensive intent and how he would fit within our team. Bit of a risk reward pick. If he gets the defensive aspect could be a superstar, if he doesn’t will fade in to oblivion as a purely offensive type without the pressure required in the modern game.

Tholstrup is the most physically ready. Very robust type, but his pace and movement belie his size. His tank has been questioned, will be interesting to see his testing. Genuine footballer who could be a great pick. Forward, wing or inside credentials at this stage.

Sanchez falls in to the small forward/ midfielder category. Certainly capable as a mid, but excels up forward, which is likely to be his role. Pretty much missed 2022 with injury was was somewhat underdone at the championship, but still good enough for All Australian honours. Would be happy if we called him out.

Still believe we need to acquire a key defensive option in the draft. While a bean pole, Ollie Murphy may make our pick and be an option. I am still thinking we are a fair chance of trading in another late first or early second rounder although there may be options later in the draft we could develop.

Our list isn’t missing much despite the bleating of many in recent times. We have debatable depth and developing down back, so I see a KPD kid developing for a couple of years while we retain one or both of Young and Durdin as short term coverage as a priority. Then it is the hybrid forward type who can become a bit of a leader as alluded to in the posts I quote. The other requirement is for an ongoing progression of midfield prospects, we are likely to be thinner when the dust settles on this year’s trade/draft period and maybe worse after next year’s.

Adding the Irish is a great move, Duffy at 194cm and the best athlete at their testing is a fine prospect who will be interesting to see positionally. Could he be a key position prospect? Monahan at 189cm is going to be flanker or perhaps mid down the track. We have the time, and now the team to develop them. Wondering if we have pre conceived plans, or will be happy just to see how they develop.

Still waiting to see the delistings and trades. Anyone moved from the list is going to be very hard done by. Looking at Plowman, Honey and Philp as most likely to be gone is harsh, but a pure numbers game largely driven by contracts. How many are traded out? I am certain we are going to lowball the likes of Jack SOS and McGovern, and then there is the rumoured Dow contract and some trade rumours around Fisher and to a lesser degree Young. There almost has to be multiple rookie upgrades as well. So much to play out.

All I know is that I don't want us overthinking the pick amongst a small sample of 'possibles' on a consensus chart. I don't think it's the right draft to be doing that. Either back ourselves in on a surprise selection or pick the outright 'best' still available. I'd still have a preference to trade next year's 2nd, and slightly downgrade our first, for a 'highish' 2nd rounder this year.
