Analysis 2023 Draft Watch

🥰 Love BigFooty? Join now for free.

Look im a big fan of Collard and have been for months. I'm just going off what I've heard from a relative who's a recruiter over in WA and hearsay on Bigfooty/Cal Twomey etc.

Personally would consider trading up for him if he fell past 25 using future picks. I think he's the most talented small in the draft outside of Watson.

I know your rating of Collard and there is nothing personal in my previous post intended. It is just a reply in case people think there is only one correct theory about him.

I think the fact that he is here at the Combine, and doing very well, is at least a counter argument to the narrative that he is so troubled and introverted that he is incapable of playing outside WA.

I enjoy your posts in this thread particularly.

Could it be a pre hypnotic suggestion to ward off others, then Eagles swoop with a token pick. A lot of mind games in this business, just a matter of working out the BS from the truth.

Don't think so but that could be part of it. There was definitely something reported re a family matter regarding his lacklustre champs campaign and that recruiters/coaches had been told he was having a tough time away from them at the time.

As plenty have mentioned though, you get one of these players right in terms of surrounding them with good support to thrive and they can make a selection in the 30s look like the biggest steal of all time. Plenty of examples of it going the other way though and they end up requesting trades home or out of the AFL system quite quickly.

Pick 7 sounds to me like we want Watson
Certainly in the mix around there, may be a little late in some projections. My bet would be O’Sullivan, he and Curtin are both likely to be “generational” KPD.

Do we think two first rounders would get us to #7?

WCE - Harley Reid
GCS - Jed Walter
Norf - Daniel Curtin
Norf - Colby Mckercher
Hawks - Zane Duursma
WB - Nick Watson
Melbourne - Ryley Sanders/O'Sullivan
GWS - Nate Caddy
Cats - Ryley Sanders/O'Sullivan

So you may be right re O'Sullivan. Talk on Dogs forums is the clubs after Watson at their pick too.

I have a feeling the Suns will have to match Read somewhere in there. Rogers should last a little longer, but Read is both athlete and footballer as well as being two metres tall. Ruck and/or key position swingman, he has flown under the radar with projections. Almost certainly someone buds high, hoping GC won’t match two in (say) top 5. Surely a more certain bet than often lacklustre Caddy.

Id have some money on their Read going before Walter.

If that was to eventuate I'd be pretty stoked with these 3. No idea how we'd get Collard in too though while also getting Hollands over the line without destroying our draft hand next season and risk not being able to match the Campo boys.

7 - O'Sullivan
16 - Leake
28 - Collard

Leake has massive upside imo. He's my favourite at our current pick if we aren't able to make any moves up the order.

Add the Camporeale twins next year and we'd have a seriously strong underbelly of youth.

We're not getting 7 and keeping 16

Spot on there is some very good talent in the 1st 10- 12 picks, our only chance is to trade this year's & next years 1st have a chance to get to this position, be interesting as to who we rate to consider this.

That post was referring to a previous one which included a hypothetical trade of Young and Fisher for Norths pick 19. As it stands theres no way we'd be able to get to 7 without giving up 16, I agree on that. If a last minute trade of a Kennedy or Young type it opens up other possibilities.

I only say it because the msging out of the club has been that we'll be looking to add 3-4 more quality kids this off season and if we're trading up for 7 we'd really only have the 1 decent pick. Makes me think we have some other things in the works potentially.

I can't even see how we'd be getting 7 if we're looking at trading our future 2nd for Hollands.....unless we're looking at somehow getting a future 2nd for Fish.

As another poster stated, North will be having picks flying all over the place over the next week, so if we somehow can jag a future 2nd from them, we may try to package up our 2023 and 2024 1st rounders to move up the board. Although I can't really see Geelong accepting a 2023 pick possibly around pick 20-22 and something similar next year for pick 7.

If Austin can somehow get Hollands, pick 7, and a couple of 2024 2nd rounders, we need to start thinking of a statue outside if Princes Park.

Who knows?
Twomey had him at 26 in his September rankings, but described him as "a late-season bolter".

I liked the look of his highlights, he moves very well for 190cms, some interesting write ups in the form guide, every player sounds a winner.

Without having watched any of them, Jiath sounds like he would be great for us, but to be honest I’m just picturing his brother running off half back and assuming he will be similar.

Im also intrigued by Stevens at 28, having missed his junior year maybe he has taken some time to get back in to the swing of things, but any kid who steps up from U/18 footy to Geelongs VFL and has 29 touches is doing well.

Delean seems a perfect fit too,

Why trade up, going off Twomeys September draft guide, everyone sounds awesome, lets just take 2-s in the 16-30 range.

Not entirely serious but all the write ups make most of the players sound perfect for us.

So the Suns have another potential academy player who is testing strongly at the combine, Graham, haven’t seen him mentioned anywhere.
Graham was very solid off HBF for the Allies in the championships. Was plenty of quality out of his natural position, Had a few midfield minutes and looked awesome when got his chance. I would not be surprised if he is bid on in first round and ends up as good as any in the draft class. Athletic profile, I wasn’t aware of, is phenomenal.

It is partly why they are happy to offload the likes of Hollands…

Of note is that this year seemingly has a very strong top 10, and then after that the next 20 or so are very even, or at least will have very different ratings across the board, so their write-ups probably sound at a similar level.
