Quite sceptical about any running defenders averaging 11 disposals.
That was his averages for the U18 champs, not for the year.
He didn't have a great championship series, but averages around 23 disposals in the U18 league - and 102 ranking points.
Edit: also made the Coates U18 Team of the Year

I'm having visions of our recruiters having spasms, and turning into Charlie Curnow from Wickzki's avatar, when anyone doubts the efficacy of the 'half back' draft rumours.

While appreciating the "in jest" nature of this post, I do want to make it clear that

1. I've not followed the draft closely enough to really formulate an opinion other than on the GC academy.

2. It's not a rumor that I, myself, have heard. I haven't gone out of the way to follow the draft this year or the associated "whispers" about targets.

3. Opinions on list structure and management are purely my own and not to be associated with anyone involved in the club.

I can't suggest any legitimacy or otherwise to these rumors.

Does inexplicably now mean "found a way to meet a team half way to come to a recommended valuation"?

As in "I traded my car in with the dealer and inexplicably got the amount that I was hoping that it was worth,"

No, it means it should have been a straight 2nd round swap for Fisher and nothing more

Pies traded out their first round pick not thinking it would be so low for a handful of 2nd rounders and missed out on Finn Callahan. Better to trade the pick out when you know the lay of the land with regard to picks and where FS will fall.
We are in the worst position to be trading a future first.

If I was trading with Carlton I'd be assuming they finish similar next year or better. And valuing our F1 as 16-18.

There's basically no downside risk for the trading partner, but there is upside if we slip.

In contrast, if Nth put up its F1, teams would assume they were getting pick 1 or 2. Thats incredible, but teams would be paying a fortune for that best case scenario, but there is potential downside if North end up with say pick 5 or 6.

Basically top teams trading out a future first probably have the most to lose...

I like the post-champs Billy Wilson, there is a bit to work with and some versatility to play across all lines, reminds me a bit of Cottrell in that possibly an unfashionable pick but will give you everything....would not be upset with our second pick

We should be looking at players who can impact within the next 1-3 years to align with our window. Watson and Collard imo will both do that in an area we need filled, others I'm not as sold on but there's definitely talented prospects available.

If we pick up a half back or a mid theres little chance they'd even get a game for the next 2-3 years with the players we already have there.

Unless we're targeting a proven small/mid sized fwd via free agency in 2024 and we're confident we can get one imo we should be targeting one with our first pick this draft.
I think we should target 'best available' type players who have the ability to become 'best 18' players within 1 to 3 years, like you suggest. IMO the best depth in the draft just happens to be in that mid-small forward role. I don't believe that list managers should try to 'harness' the draft against the grain of its strengths as it's too tricky. I can just envisage a scenario where the players we get become handy players whilst a small number of others we overlook having a greater impact elswhere. We can't afford that kind of thing and I'm a firm believer that if you take a 'best available' approach things even out and the list balances itself. You might not get the desired results immediately but the added depth wins out in the long term.

There's no need to play silly b*****s and try to have 'a bob each way'. Hollands senior, Fantasia and our current crop of smaller forwards may never be world beaters. Conversely, one or both of our Irish recruit's and/or the Camporeale twins might end up playing half-back. Us wanting a half-back this year seems a bit reactive.

I think Brisbane, for example, are ahead of us for next year so let's not get carried away. However, if we do the right thing we might reverse that in a few years.

And if North hadn't agreed (which they wouldn't) we keep Fisher, and miss out on E. Hollands as we didn't have a list spot for him ?

The valuation was for about pick 30, they offered us about pick 40 which we declined and both sides worked to get a deal that they thought was about right. We downgraded our first rounder and got a better second rounder as a result.

You're not one of those that worship at the shrine of St. Adrian of Dodoro are you where every trade has to be a major kerfuffle? We've seen how that works out overall.

Starting to like ARIE Schoenmaker a lot, nice booming kick , reads the play well good rebounder decision making is good and is a great kick. And finds the football. Great height. Could turn into something special . Could be pick up between pick 25-40.
And I still like George stevens captained the afl academy
Strengths , character , consistency, contested game , strength, tackling and work rate. Huge kid at 18 played some really strong games for Geelong in the vfl against Collingwood VFL’S side
189cm 101kg. Big bodied mid that voss would love to work with

There's been a few red flags about Shoenmaker. Copped a lengthy club suspension for drinking early in U/18 season and reported that its still potentially an issue. Don't know him and it might be a storm in a tea cup. I'm comfortable that our recruiters would do due diligence and if they're happy so would I be.

I don't subscribe to our need for another defender, however the profile of Schoenmaker seems to have a lot to work with as a potential replacement for Kemp as a 2nd cog between Marchy and Weiters as Kemp grows into a midfielder (wishful thinking on my part). Looks like he doesn't mind floating forward to kick a big one from outside 50, either - not unlike a certain ex-Blue Irishman...

The Tassie/Cowan connection is a small factor, too. But that beautiful, effortless peg and massive frame is exciting. We are crying out for better users and he might be one of the best in the draft (certainly at our 2nd round range).

The fact he has some rough edges isn't a terrible thing (see: Charlie) and we've already shown this offseason that we're willing to take a chance on a kid like that (see: Hollands).

I know Saady is a beautiful kick but we have been missing a genuine 'Superboot' ala Hayden Young for forever (I don't count Watson or Shields who tried but didn't make it for us).

Wouldn't mind Arie at all.

It's a great position to be in.

Don't think Mirkov will make it, HOK is young but believe he will make it at the next level

Think we are okay for ruckmen/relief

But if there is a slider/undrafted kid, you would have to consider it
HOK is probaby a minimum 2 to 3 years away from playing any significant role.

We're talking about different things here.

Wings often have versatility and can play multiple positions.

No small or medium forward is going to have a year 1 impact greater than Durdin or Motlop.

And we just brought in mature talent (Hollands, Fantasia) in these positions .

I'm not against drafting a forward, but not necessarily with our first pick

Think Caddy could give that theory a run for its money.
Looked great when he was playing in the 2s for us - u did say medium forward.

Sellers and the Dominator can't see what the issue is ??

Good write up on him a few days ago.
Would love for us to target that type of player, sounds like his injury hasn’t been a big set back & has given him a greater appreciation & depth on his approach to being a footballer.

Think it’s the hardest thing to recruit for - attitude & desire.
