OK, another Cat B surprise by Caruso, like Will Shaw a few years ago.

Anyone have any more info on Nathan Wardius, other than what's been stated in the media release?
Ive literally never heard of him until today. Same as the Perth kid we signed last night, first time I'd even hear the name was when we read it out.

Highlights package looks ok. Also played a couple of VFL games for us (not too many possessions but a couple of goals against the suns)

Pretty clear pattern in our selections - we've gone for outright speed and agility.
Trend in recent years is to go after the strong testers and great athletes but feels like it's been cranked up even more this year, gives us some high-upside guys to work with. They're not all going to work out but our development team typically does a good job getting a lot out of these guys. Our list is already pretty chock full of lots of young and emerging talent that it allows us to take more swings like this, interested to see who pans out.

Regarding the Crows trade it may have been that the Eagles were after both #7 + 1 of #16 this year or F1 (24) and the Club decided it was too much
Maybe we find out maybe we don't but hopefully both Gothard and Leake turn into 200game premiership players for the club

Surprised no genuine mids were picked but like others I think they may look to move Perryman to mid maybe not this year but next after Ward and it does give opportunities for speed (Daniels, Bedford + others) to have short bursts and another options is for XOH and Rowston are back up options

Looking at the picks it adds depth to the small forwards and expect a couple to shine (hopefully they all do) and see game time but see who is around in 4 years. Peatling I see as a reserves leader and playing mid predominantly although a big pre season and his smother in an early season game showed real effort. I could also see either Gruz or Derksen spending half the season in defence to learn some craft and again so much hypothetical here amd we will see come March how they line up

Just reading through the names you mentioned it shows we’ve really rebuilt our depth …. Let’s hope they come on as expected in the next 2 or 3 years

Hume league is not a great standard. Long shot but suppose that's what Cat B rookie list is for.
They played him in a couple VFL games presumably as a trial, hopefully he showed something they like

listening to Caruso and a couple of things from elsewhere - apparently WC were shopping next years first around to a number of clubs and nobody wanted to take it. It wasn’t just us that said no.

the reason Caruso gave was basically, we wanted these 2 players & we needed 2 picks to do that.

Given how the top end of next year's draft looks like being 6-8 mids who atm seem pretty even. Its not surprising that clubs choose to keep top 12 selections in a draft that had more variety.

Disappointed McCormack wasn't selected, he has some real talent. I wonder what the issue is?

Fox Sports analysis and grades for the draft. Think our assessment of C+ is a bit harsh - in the end we got two good players in the first round, albeit not in the pick order expected.

GWS GIANTS
Picks (at start of the draft):
7, 16, 43, 59, 77, 79

Selections: Phoenix Gothard (12), James Leake (17), Joe Fonti (44), Harvey Thomas (59)

An incredible first night of the draft for the Giants, who traded down and took a bolter then traded up to take a slider. After sending Pick 8 to Adelaide to shift a few spots down the order, the Giants pulled the biggest shock of the first round, taking Murray Bushrangers forward Phoenix Gothard at Pick 12. Then sensing St Kilda could take James Leake at Pick 17, the Giants swapped picks with the Saints and drafted the Tassie utility — the player they’d been most heavily linked to with their first selection. But as Saints champion Leigh Montagna noted on Fox Footy on Monday night: “What’s interesting about the Giants’ selections is they got Gothard at 12 and were lucky to get Leake – and had to give up a future second rounder to get him at 17. You wonder whether they would’ve been able to get Gothard anyway at 17.” The Giants were keen on defender Joe Fonti, who they were happy to pounce on late in the second round, while they didn’t have to match a bid on top academy prospect Harvey Thomas.
Grade: C+
