A good example also of someone that has struggled to finish off his work at times but appears to have put that behind him.
Yes, indeed. Look at his second year (2019) stats. Played all games, including finals, kicked 11.20 plus 25 goal assists (second in the comp). If that had been 20.11 (or better) he'd have had much more media!

Brent Stormy Daniels still our most underrated player, really missed him those 500 odd days he was out. Now he’s hitting the scoreboard more and this game plan along with Snooze suits him perfectly.
Good to see him getting the recognition he deserves. Sounds like a really great fella as well

Fox’s analysis and ratings at the halfway point of season 2023. States we depend too much on Toby; Toby, Tom Green and Buckley have been our standouts; the trade priority is a back with Riccardi a possible trade to achieve this; and we need to act quickly to secure Himmelberg with Sydney circling.

GWS GIANTS (4-7, 87.3%)

Three word analysis

Too Greene reliant

What’s gone right

Toby Greene was promoted to stand alone skipper for 2023 and he has gone from strength to strength for the Giants this season. Greene has proved the spark in all four of the club’s wins, including kicking the match winner in the Sydney derby. Tom Green continues to put his name in the top midfielders of the AFL while Jack Buckley has impressed down back under new coach Adam Kingsley. Off the field, the club is on track to break its membership record, as they’ve already hit the 30,000 mark – remarkably for the fifth straight year.

What’s gone wrong

The injury to Sam Taylor has hurt the Giants down back, and it’s a position they just haven’t been able to cover. A controversial free kick for dissent against Stephen Coniglio back in Round 3 changed the Giants’ momentum as they should have had the win over Carlton. The club was left ‘privately seething’ according to reports. The Giants remain the only side to have been beaten by West Coast this season – albeit that match came before the Eagles horror injury run.

Contract and trade priorities

With veteran Phil Davis likely to retire, after coming within a whisker of calling stumps last year, the Giants need a rock down back – and they’ll need to trade for one. Jake Riccardi is someone who could draw plenty of rival interest as he struggles for regular game time. The forward hasn’t been required each week since Jesse Hogan arrived at the club and could look for a new home in 2024. Harry Himmelberg looms as the big signature the club needs moving forward, as his ability to play both ends – and take a contested grab – gives the Giants a target. The whispers are Sydney is one of the clubs circling the out-of-contract key position talent so GWS will need to move quickly to lock him in.

What Fox Sports stated in their review of round 12, confirms the majority view of Briggs in this Board. He has had a breakout season and has established himself as our number 1 Ruck whilst Preuss has been injured and Flynn has been having a spell in the VFL. With the contract of both Preuss and Flynn expiring this year, our club might soon have to decide which one they decide to re-sign. I think Preuss is the one who may not be re-signed, but if risk averse the club could give him a one year extension.

Kieren Briggs might’ve just locked himself into the Giants’ No. 1 ruck role for the rest of the season. In just his 12th game – and third on the trot – Briggs was brilliant against triple premiership big man Toby Nankervis, conjuring two excellent forward 50 stoppage goals to go with 11 disposals, nine tackles, seven score involvements and six clearances, while 11 of his 30 hit-outs went to a teammate’s advantage

Hey Guys

Once again pardon the intrusion. I tried to find the appropriate thread but alas no luck. What's happening with Brayden Pruess? He's been listed as TBC for some time, but wasn't put on the long-term injury list for mid-season bye which suggests he should be back this year. However there's been no updates on him in the injury reports, does anybody have any indication of when he'll be back?

Cheers

I think it is his back.
Also, do you think there is any chance you try to trade for pick 1 this year? Or only if you guys and Brisbane don't do that well for the rest of the season and you have say picks 8,13 at end of the season.

Champion Data’s top 10 players of the year after Round 12. One Giant is in the list and that’s the unheralded (to the wider public, not us here!) Brent Daniels. Also Perryman, according to Champion Data, has been exceptionally strong during the last six weeks

7. Brent Daniels (GWS)
“He was flying, he was still the no.1 rated player on the ground at half-time before he came off (with a hamstring injury).

Pardon the intrusion. What role has Perryman been playing this year? Was hoping he'd come on as a midfielder, but his numbers are quite low.

Last 2 weeks he played defence.
Before that accountable mid field, not tagging, but pretty close to a run with role.

Cheers. Makes sense, love the way he goes about it.
I love him. Think much like Brent Daniels, outside of Giants fans they slide under the radar.

Callan who was to be a forward this year, is now seen by Kingsley as a midfielder given his superb performances during Kelly’s injury. Ward just gets better with age!

Also Kingsley states that whilst Sam Taylor will play before the bye, Kelly, Daniels and Cumming will return after the bye.

The midfield spot opened up for Ward due to a hamstring injury to Josh Kelly, but the former co-captain, who was dropped to the sub role for two games last month, has firmed as part of coach Adam Kingsley’s preferred on-ball mix for the remainder of the season.

Goals kicked so far this season by position - 70% of our goals have been kicked by forwards (68% is the average for the AFL), 21% by the midfield (24% is the average for the AFL) and 9% by our backs (8% is the average for the AFL). We have also scored the 6th most goals in the competition, despite currently being 15th.

Article saying that we will look to use HH in a defensive role for remainder of season.
I wonder if that's just speculation or something that's got legs

With Buckley, Taylor, Cumming, Haynes in the backline of our best 22. I'm not sure we really need Himmelberg back there, even though that's where he seems to perform his best.

Yes, I thought Kingsley was of the view HH should be in the forward, and that’s what they agreed on pre-season. HH is only playing back due to our backline injuries, and will be going to the forwards, when these injured backline players return?

Wouldn’t be surprised is he players forward and Cadman gets a rest. Not needed down back unless Keefe gets dropped.

What each club should fix in the second half of the season.

GWS

(4-8, 15th)
Best performance: 12.9 (81) def 10.14 (74) Geelong
Worst performance: 7.13 (55) def by 18.12 (120) Collingwood

Defensive output: Following the trends of previous seasons, the Giants have displayed another poor start to the year despite showing glimmers of hope. The Giants remain the only side to have been beaten by West Coast this season and have had some close calls with the likes of Hawthorn, Geelong and Sydney. They now are facing a defensive crisis, particularly after the loss of Sam Taylor. The Giants rank 15th for team-to-opponent points per game differential, as well as ranking 14th for team to opponent clearances per game differential. The Giants are currently playing with a lacklustre defensive unit, under an ineffective defensive strategy. Defenders such as Jack Buckley and Lachie Whitfield have played their role well, presenting a silver lining. The Giantsshould aim to use the weapons they have and restructure their defense to suit the evolving offensive game.

I wonder if he can spend some time on a wing? Richo style. It might be asking too much. He could also play more as a HFF than key position?

With Jesse being managed today, as we head into the bye only 5 Giants have played all 14 games this season: Coniglio, Ash, Callaghan, Idun and Buckley.

From very early in the season Kelly has had extra explosiveness in his running allowing him to get separation and utilise his kicking. He played mostly outside on the weekend with Finn taking his CBA. I wonder if that will continue give the game he had kicking 3 goals. We have struggle to have wingers that have that sort of impact before and Finn has slotted into the mid rotation nicely.
