A big game, we need to win to be able to finish 2nd or 3rd. Lose and we can still finish 4th even if losing one more game.
That aside, it won't be long before some dead rubber games start. 9 games is arguably a little too long in my view.

It's a world cup it only happens every 4 years, nine games is not nearly enough. It's not that T20 garbage where 1 game is too many. It's the bridge between selling your soul and actual cricket.

This format is shocking.

You shouldn’t be able to lose your first two and still be in the running as we did.

Losing to the Dutch should pretty much be a knockout blow, instead all South Africa have to do from here is win one more game and they’re in basically.

There’s going to be so many dead rubbers. England, Bangladesh and Afghanistan are all pretty much out now. What does that do for the integrity of the competition when they each have to play four more games without any context to them?

That, of course, makes absolutely no sense.

The third best team could easily play the two best in the comp in their first two games and beat everyone else. Change the format and they don't play those two until finals it is exactly the same thing.

It's not the format it's your capacity to think about it.

Not to mention, we were a dropped catch away from beating India.
It would have been a long way back from 4/20.

Agreed.

I don't have a problem with "everyone plays everyone" itself - but if you are going to do that you need to expand the finals to reduce the number of dead rubbers and create a real incentive for finishing top as opposed to 3rd or 4th etc

Perhaps a final 6:

Elim final: 3 v 6
Elim final: 4 v 5
Semi : 1 v lowest ranked Elim winner
Semi: 2 v highest ranked Elim winner
Final: Winner of 2 semis.

Only problem with that is letting 6 through rewards mediocrity a bit - but it will keep the tournament alive.

Could also try a final 5 and base it on the old footy final 5.

That only proves it’s a bad format.

A World Cup tournament should be designed as such that the games get progressively harder as you move through the tournament.

The number four ranked team shouldn’t play the 1st and 3rd ranked team in the group stages.

So the afl season is a bad format then. OKAY. Thanks for your input, it's been most helpful.

Name me one other sport with a World Cup format where each team plays every other team.

This format also is limited to ten teams, meaning we don’t get to see the West Indies, Zimbabwe or Ireland, nor do countries like Scotland or Namibia get to participate when it’s important for their development.

It will be interesting to see the picked side.
With Maxwell bowling well and Marsh bowling again Stoinis and/or Green are not essential when Head comes back. They have done nothing to deserve a spot over Labuschagne.

The pacing of the tournament would help if it's a few more double headers.

Id even go back to 8 teams in a league format, and play a 2nd division along side it with the other nations. Top 4 play semis and avoid qualification next time around.

With Head coming in, we don't need Labs and Smith in the side.
I'd drop Smith but it won't happen.

Stoinis and Green both bowl.
Doubt they will drop an all rounder.

Feels like the top 4 is pretty much set tbh, although avoiding India in a semi is key, gonna be a heap of dead rubbers to come you'd think, too many teams have shat the bed.

Not sure what it is but Australia always rattle the black caps.

It's the only real time I see this Kiwis side flustered is mostly against us.

Starc seems to have good record against them as well.

A beautiful backdrop of Dharamshala let's hope for a great game of cricket and an Aussie victory.

It's going back to the old 14 team format for the next edition...2 stages of group play (including super sixes), then semi's & final.
