Do you have a link to the article? I can't find anything on Google or the AFL website. Not doubting you, just trying to find the article you referenced.
From the article below:

"For instance, it would have allowed Adelaide to list one of Rory Sloane or Taylor Walker as a veteran for 2024 and opened up another spot on their primary list. The idea was designed to keep veterans in the game without sacrificing a list spot that a youngster may have taken, with the veteran’s full payments still counted in the salary cap."

It does seem by all reports Elliott Himmelberg is finally going to be given a serious tryout in defence something some of us have been keen to see for several seasons now. Surely his manager David Trotter would be getting that feedback from Justin Reid and Elliott himself? And that appears to have been the Giants plans for the Berg if they'd landed him.

I was at West Adelaide when the Berg was first played as a key defender. The experiment didn’t last too long. Despite our Twos having a solid win, the journeyman playing on Elliot absolutely pansed him. I have rarely seen a player look so clueless as a key defender. He made Big Billy look like SOS Silvagni.

I am an optimist, I hope a full pre-season with the defenders will enable him to improve dramatically.

Now the trade experts on here can give us their expert opinions on watching 3 x 2 minute videos to tell us who we should be taking.

A few years back so many people wanted to trade our future first for Hollands and Gold Coast basically just gave him away. Before that Caldwell was going to be the best player from his draft year and you couldn’t disagree.

I love this time of the year

I like the look of Sydney. The players they gained are older but they kept their decent first round pick

Melbourne did good business swapping Grundy for McAdam and their draft hand is great for a finalist while Oliver and Petracca are still in their prime
Agree with this except....Oliver in his prime is a little debatable right now

Do we win the unspent cap award?
Its actually likely to become a problem, albeit a 'quality problem'. Too much spare cap. We wanted Day and Redman (1.5m) and had probably allowed for Mc Adam and Dude (1m or so). I cant see how we dont have AT LEAST 2m (possibly MUCH more) already spare before the upcoming big lift in TPP (which clubs normally bank at least a portion of the increase).

We have likely already pre-paid/front loaded many longer term contracts (Dawson, Rachele, Soli) and still be operating at/near the minimum 95% level. Not sure besides offering silly money for big money trade recruits or FA (eg we could offer McCluggage 1.25m / year x 5 without blinking but still likely miss out) what the other options are. Perhaps if we are 100% convinced with TT, Fog, Hinge, Murray, Rankine etc we also extend out to 5-6 years total contracted and start front loading these contracts also to get to the 95% level.

Reid on 5aa this arvo, Borlase will be on the list, just working out how. Next year will be free agents/trade focused.

Everyone hear that, that’s their objective. Now we can measure them again.

The one that concern's me right now is Brayden Cook.

After 3 years I just haven't seen it with him. Even after losing McAdam and Doedee, and with Schoenberg and Murray out, if i'm picking my best 22 for round 1, he's not in it. TBH he's not particularly close either, probably would struggle to make my emergencies list.

Gonna need the mother of all offseasons IMO. I hope for his sake he proves me really really wrong!
Next year Cook needs to make an impact.

Great opportunity with McAdam traded.

Had a good game this year, but unfortunately wasn't given an extended run.

Clean skills.

Billy will never look like SOS under any circumstances!

We have never given Berg a decent run in defence to properly judge him there.

Is this a "Break Glass" decision on Himmelberg .....seems like an act of desperation

Defenders have to be urgent and somewhat aggressive - Berg is the least likely big man I have seen that I would play back. Would play Strachan back before Berg

Well it was also GWS's plan according to his manager David Trotter so there's that as well.

He was a genuine swingman in his junior career playing plenty in defence so he's not totally new to it.

Why not? Costs nothing to try him in the SANFL for starters, could be like his ruckwork which has improved considerably over the years.
Because in my humble opinion, like Borlaise, Himmelberg is too easy to turn inside out ....he's fine running straight at the ball, the oppo will turn him though

Not all clubs though ....a Hawkins matchup will suit him

You're not gonna believe this but plans can change you know.

What if, total contrary to current expectations, say 10 South Australian midfield draftee options show up evenly across a range from pick 1 to 30 next year.

Do you think theyre gonna go, well Reidy said on 5aa on the 19th of October 2023 that we were gonna be free agent and trade focussed and so there's no way we can draft any of those?

I think it would be fair for the club to say “turns out there are some gun mids so we will go to the draft”. Is that what they said this year as to why we’ve gone to the draft?

Well the only uncontracted ones worth looking at. The rest of the uncontracted players will likely be delisted.

We could always have a crack at a contracted player I suppose…..

Players get contracted during the year, clearly we couldn’t convince any of those uncontracted players to not re-sign and instead come to us.

There's also this...

Reid said Burgess’s versatility would be important while defender Nick Murray recovered from a knee reconstruction that could sideline him for up to three quarters of next season.

He also flagged a potential backline switch for key forward Elliott Himmelberg.

The list boss said Adelaide needed to bring a replacement in for Himmelberg to grant him his wish of joining his younger brother, Harry, at GWS.

Reid said the club, which now had selections 10, 14 and 20 this year, was keen to climb the order before next month’s draft.

It had been in conversations with Geelong, which held pick 8.

“We’ll certainly look to get up … whether that’s between now and the draft or on draft night itself,” Reid said.
Who do you think the Crows are targeting ?

Ouch, not a good sign. not only has displayed 0.00% at the highest level this just helps solidify that we haven’t missed out on much

Do they need to say anything now?

Do we need to have them say officially that they tried to sign a couple of good players but weren't able to land any. So we go to the draft.

I can figure that out without them saying it.

There has to be a limit to how much you offer people or you stuff your salary cap ala Collingwood with Grundy and others. If we breach the salary cap do you think the AFL will do for us what it did for them and just say fix it now and sweep it all under the carpet? Lol. Increases the chance of a trade next year, which might make little George happy. Lol, who am i kidding.

Its not like we're bottom 8 at drafting. We're comfortably amongst the top few. I'm cool going to the draft. We'll plan for two and if a absolute gun is available we'll take a third, otherwise we'll probably trade 20 into next year.

Who should we have spent it on? Anyone traded in this period you really wished we had of got

I liked all the guys we missed out on and the guys that are leaving
