Mitch Szybkowski is training with the Bombers...From what I heard there were some big ????'s on his endurance for midffield at AFL level.

I'd much sooner have given a tryout to a couple of SA KPP lads Shaun Bennier or Brodie Tuck.
I’m sorry, didn’t you just say that Hudson O’Keefe would be good for us, who is also training with Essendon?

I know there where questions on Sybkowskys endurance, however we have a D grade midfield at the moment. It seems a no brainer to me that we desperately need to throw as many darts at the midfield board as we can in this rebuild, if we want it to succeed.
Soligo, Berry and maybe Zac Taylor look like they could be OK, however Sloane, Crouch and Seedsman are done and Hately, Jones and McHenry are looking like complete busts as midfielders. Pedlar looks like a forward at best and Cooke similar. I just don’t see us being successful in the next few years unless we unearth 1 or 2 A grade mids from somewhere.

Yeah he'd be my pick of who was available but most of those 18/19 year olds will be available in the mid season draft unless we had wanted one of them desperately and it appears we had no interest or we would have gone early with the doubts about McAsey and Seedsman?

I think you're underselling Pedlar big time too and Hamish said when we drafted Nankervis he thought he had all the tools to play midfield eventually. Let's wait and see if as has been stated both Rankine and Rachele get midfield minutes. Berry and Soligo have both looked like they are already better than just OK IMO.

You not wrong about the need for 1-2 A grade mids, the question is can we get it from organic growth? Or to re-phrase, are they already on our list?

One is very likely to be on our list after our offseason in Rankine.

Pedlar and Rachele are probably the most likely to be that other at this point in terms of their game, seeing both have that x-factor needed to get to the absolute top. That said, it might be a couple of years until we're in a position to be able to use both as full-time midfielders (and we may never use Rachele as one, seeing how he more likely to end being the Shai Bolton mid/half forward hybrid).

I agree that somewhere in those 3, all top 10 picks, is the key to our future.

There is also class down from there, with Dawson and Soligo potentially very good, while Berry, and Schoenberg promise to be solid.

How is this midfield any different from the Richmond premiership midfield? They had Cotchin who is clearly serviceable, and Martin who could be comparable to Rankine one day if everything works out.

Of course, it's unfashionable to be bullish about our midfield, but it is more promising than you'd be let on here.

Rankine will be quality, but that’s getting way too excited

Martin was averaging 24 touches and a goal a game in his fourth year

Cotchin was a bit better than serviceable in his prime.

We might not like him but he was an absolute gun.

If we can get 2 players to take the next step like Berry did last year our midfield looks a whole lot better than people think

Schoenberg , Rankine , Pedlar , Taylor are prob the ones I’d nominate … if 2 of them come off in midfield and Dawson is able to play across the centreline I don’t think it looks too bad at all

Throw in Rachele and Soligo …. Hopefully Dowling in time . Even Nankervis has hope

Taylor is my dark horse..

When he finally overcame injury and got a bit of a run on in the sanfl at the end of last year he looked very exciting.

Channel 7 reporting Brown will likely sign, joining the team next week. So much for an audition.

Is Brown a Seedsman replacement?

An big introvert (McAsey) out and an even bigger introvert (Brown) in.

A 10 possession KPP out, a 10 possession mid in.

A list clogger out, a list cloggers in?

I’d rather we’d chased someone who had been overlooked who might prove capable at the top level rather than someone who has been dumped. Collingwood have proved good judges of fringe players lately.

Feels like we're reaching for the treetops with picks like Turner and Brown. Solid depth players if they work out.

Whereas with someone like Parnell the ceiling is a Caleb Daniel type who could make a genuine difference to our fortunes OR he'll be too small to make it and disappear.

There's a risk the Parnells will amount to nothing but there's also a chance they'll be impactful. I'd prefer we rolled the dice on possible upside players with these top up picks, mid season draft picks etc.

Richmond had a lot of quality and guys that played their roles but really Martin won them the flags. I doubt they win any without him. As good as Rankine might be, he is not going to be that good.

Yeah, I’m surprised there isn’t more excitement about Nank.

I watched most SANFL games this year and his progress was fantastic.

I definitely think he could be a midfielder..moves really well and is evasive.

SANFL wins = rebuild on track. We're at least inventive.

Young squad SANFL wins = rebuild progressing. Success breeds success and with the hurdles in place to minimise our chances to win the Sanfl overall it would be a great achievement for the Taylor’s, Nankervis Mewchurch type players. Gives them a taste of success - and works in build culture

Is it possible that T Brown is being picked up to be a “run-with” player?

I ask because we do tend to get ripped apart more regularly than most teams by the big-bodied mids such as Cripps and Bont and there is absolutely no logical matchup for those guys on our list at present. I’d love to see the numbers on Brownlow votes per game against us for Cripps in particular. Dude absolutely destroys us. Which makes sense when his opponents have not been in the same realm as him in terms of strength and particularly height.

Maybe Brown could pinch-hit as a run-with player against the sides with a gun mid over about 190cm and just focus on shutting those players down above all else?

If that’s his role, and he does ok at it, I’m fine with this acquisition. If that’s not his role, then I don’t understand picking him up at all. Seems like a Ronin O’Connor type to me, and we ditched him without giving him much of a go at it.

Yeah, I posted that on Thursday. Brown is only an inch shorter than Seeds who turns 31 in just over a week away. Brown played on the wing or in defence in his VFL games and appears to be a reasonable kick.

Feels like we're back to being set with our group and want honest foot soldiers to be available to back them up if injury occurs.

We have Hinge, Dawson, Sholl, Sloane, Cook, Milera and Jones who could play or be developed to play wing. We don’t need a reject to play that position.

If Dawson isn’t a lock for one wing position then Nicks is an idiot, if Dawson plays defence with our defensive options then Nicks is a ****wot

Could the lack of key position defender be that we have someone lined up in 2024?

We're not in a phase that requires us to have a backup key defender. We played 1 KPD last year by choice anyway, so I don't think they're worried enough to use a list spot on some slug just so we've got another 195cm body on the list. We shouldn't be blowing list spots on known fringe/mediocre players, regardless of where they play. That said, it apears that we're doing exactly that with Brown, as we did with Turner. But worrying about depth in any position is premature as far as I'm concerned.

Left field options would be EH and maybe even Strachan to ruck with ROB having a crack. Plus we might as well expose Borlase before he's cut loose if injuries were to hit. It's not like it's going to cost us a flag or even a finals win this year.
