Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

Everything a manager says prior to signing the paper is PR and spin. Everything the club says before signing the paper is PR and spin. Everything the player says before signing the paper is PR and spin.

Fyfe can sign his last contract in football this year, he should be making it as big as possible. It will be bigger outside of Fremantle.

Freo can offer him about $120,000 more than another club and have the same salary cap impact, that's our advantage.
I agree - but the amount of unsourced poo that piled on a champion of our club is disgraceful and should be called out everytime.

My thoughts keep going to: "Who would take Fyfe?"
"Why would they take Fyfe?"
"What would they expect from Fyfe?"
and "Does it really affect us if we don't have Fyfe?"

Can't really answer any of those definitively, but IMHO, the last one is a No.

There's still the chance (admittedly small) he turns into a pretty good forward for a couple of years. I'd hold out on that one.

I mean when your one and three and Fyfe was your best fwd in the pre season, well yeah i guess it does effect us if Fyfe isn’t available.

I would hazard we'd be 1 and 3 even if he was playing. But that's just speculation.

No, I'm sorry, 2 and 2 more like. We might have beaten the Roos. But we still get done by the crows. I'd hate to think we are solely reliant on Nat Fyfe playing or not.

Agreed but if he truly wants to leave for a flag those clubs are not going to have the cap space to give him a big deal so he is gong to have to go to a struggler like GC if he wants the money.

There is a section of our fan base that actively enjoys it when we are shit because they get to complain. On twitter there is a Freo fan who is actively calling for the club to be deregistered. They are worse than Eagles fans trolling and really need to get called out more

The difference between a two year deal on $400,000 a year and a three year deal on $265,000 a year is $0.

There's a subtext to this post.

I think any club prepared to pay Fyfe more than an average salary on a 1 or 2 year contract is taking a massive risk. Seems fair for someone who has barely had much influence for 3 or so years.

Nat has been a great Freo player and if he wants to stay those should be the terms. If he has had enough of Freo and wants to go elsewhere I’d be happy to take the FA compensation and move on.

I'm hoping the cull last year is a blessing in disguise. Yes Lobb, Tucker, Logue and Acres would make us more competitive now but I'm not convinced they would have brought us closer to a premiership. They were flaky as f*%k. And apart from Logue, were all at the back ends of their career.

This year we need to test our depth and young players and see whether Sturt, Henry, Worner, Erasmus, Johnson, Treacy etc are good enough. They may not have got that opportunity otherwise.

Although the start to the season is a complete clusterfu*^, there is opportunity to turn it into a positive. We have glaring issues with our ball movement and forward line. If finals are out of contention, I hope we change things up and start looking to the future. We've still got a very young and quality list. I'm hoping we can launch in 2024 if it doesn't click this year.

Collingwood fans probably thought it was the end of the world in 2021 when they traded out a future first (pick 2) and got rid of Trealor, Stephenson and Phillips for peanuts. Yes, they got Daicos but their success is pretty much driven by the same list.
I'm not having a dig at you personally @haypenny, but these posts drive me up the wall. We've been rebuilding for 6 YEARS, yet so many supporters want to look to the future, play the kids etc. etc. without ever wanting to be successful now. To me it seems so many supporters love to hope. After 6 years of rebuilding we have people who now want to rebuild, after experiencing the most miniscule amount of success. One final win. Woopdy f'en doo. It sucks so much to perennially crap. I want the club and its supporters to stop constantly looking to the future and start to think that this is our year. We'll blink and Brayshaw and others will be 30. Then it will be 'we hope we can win a flag for him, Pearce and Serong before their careers are over. Let's play the youth and really push for a flag in a year or two before they retire. I can tell you what the outcome of that strategy will be. Exactly the same as we've seen for the past 30 years.

I’ve got a bridge to sell you…

???? I literally said I don’t believe it in my next post. Get your s**t together and reload.
Not sure doubling down is the way to go champ.

Yeah I get it. We need to have higher expectations and demanding success now.

However the posts that drive me up the wall are the whinging posts reflecting on previous trading or drafting errors (Hogan, Jackson etc). It's done. We can't change it and also ignores the wins we've had.

My post is about trying to make the best out of our sh*ty position now. If we're not going to make finals this year, we must be getting games into our future, test the untried, and play a more attacking game style. Hopefully so we can launch in 2024.

I am ready for the dislikes, but do we look at Tarryn Thomas?
Surely one of the troubled souls we bring in comes good.
A midfield with him, Johnson & Erasmus suddenly goes from the shrimp brigade to the monster mash
Ok, come at me :)

He needs 12 months in a 2nd tier league, and staying clean.

He makes Stengle look like a boy scout.

But then a team will pick him after that as a delisted free agent, he will play like a star and posters here will suggest Freo could have gotten him for cheap prior to his proving of value season.

Viscous cycle.

He might be good for us but I doubt we'd be good for him. Our history of 'turning players around' isn't that great. Plus he'd be a long way from anything close to a support network here.

I understand where you are coming from and wish we were good now as well. But it ignores the harsh reality of the situation. People don't want to rebuild again. They just want to see it through. It has never been finished properly, and been continually delayed by the likes of Neale/Hogan, Langdon, Weller, Hill, Logue, Cerra, etc.

We have actually tried to stop looking constantly to the future by bringing in Wilson, Lobb, McCarthy, Hogan, Bennell, Sylvia, Acres, Aish, O'Meara, etc. And where has that got us? It's not hard for people to see drafting and developing the kids as what works best for Freo.

Since we arrived in 1995, the Hawks were terrible to average for the most part of a decade and nearly folded. They hit the draft and jagged a flag in 2008 when Geelong were dominant over the year and Crawford was hanging on like Mundy. That was our 2022, only we faded and fell short. Then as reigning premiers they started 1-3 in 2009 (GF rematch and 3 sides that would finish 9-13, 8-14, 7-13) and finished 9-13 and missed the finals.

They started climbing 2010 (sneaked into 8, but we knocked them off) and 2011 (top 4), which would be 2024 and 2025 for us. The sweet spot (which coincided with our own and we should have shared the flags) in 2012-2015 came 8 years after drafting Franklin, Roughead, Lewis. For us that would be 2026-2029.

It's a long time to wait, but that's just where I think we are. We need to keep hitting the draft (or if we must trade, then Jackson/Clark type ages, not JOM) and focusing on developing young players. This year might blow by, but we can get back into finals next year and start a proper sustained ascent.

Those two were the keys but also add, Hodge and Mitchell from 2001

We don't have a Franklin and Roughhead, nor a rioli
