Mod notice after Mr Bob did a lot of annoying work in moving days of posts out of here. As we are heading into offseason, this thread is for 2023 list management only. Getting upset on previous trades can be taken to the vent thread. Lets keep this thread on track in the part of the year it's actually relevant

be nuts to delist Sturt now. Corbett and Emmett have shown nothing that is in any way better than what he has to offer and we have no other medium forwards with talent on the list
They are just 2 of the 4-5 players contracted beyond 2023 that are just deadwood really in AFL terms. I can forgive Emmett as you take a chance on a late round draft pick and it doesn’t work out - that’s fine.
If Corbett however was OOC in 2023 it’s a racing certainty he would be delisted.
Kueks injury might allow us to get creative with list management to keep Sturt around and still get some decent draft selections in the door.
The issue with Sturt now is that if he has a strong end to the season and kicks say, 10 more goals, then there will be multiple clubs looking for his services beyond next season. We might not have a choice if he stays here or not..

I’m really starting to buy into the Kane Cornes/Xav Ellis theory about many players being contracted too long nowadays.
Only the top 10 players on the list should be contracted beyond 2 years.
There is countless mid-tier AFL players getting contracted for 3 years or so and immediately taking the foot off the gas. It’s probably a subconscious thing and everyone but the most driven individuals are guilty of. Many of us are the same in our daily lives.
Many people do not perform at their best unless the pressure is on. When there is a year left on their contract and they are playing for their livelihoods.
In our own club in recent years we have seen people like Brodie, Hughes, Blakely, Switta and several others have a form slump after the long term security of a contract is provided to them. The very edge that earned them the deal on the first place is gone. They probably don’t even realise it themselves but they are suddenly coasting along without any threat and it only takes a small dip to be exposed in this comp.
Jake Soligo was contacted to 2029 by Adelaide a month ago.
Six more years for Jake Soligo!!!
He’s spent the last couple of weeks in the SANFL. Was Adelaides list manager on magic mushrooms or something when that deal was offered?
Sturt has had the axe metaphorically hanging over his head for the last year and a half and it’s only now we are starting to see something of what he is capable of. Some urgency and desperation in his play as the real prospect of a $40 a hour job in a hi-vis jacket next November stated to come into view for him.

Stars are different and they are wired differently - people like Fyfe and Brayshaw and Serong were/are always going to strive to get the very best out of themselves as they want to create a legacy.

Cal Twomey has three Gold Coast Academy players in his top 11 rankings. Doesn’t mean they will go in those positions - but two are top 10 (2 and 7) and another at 11 but rated around the teens.

Gold Coast have the following in the second/third rounds
26, 29, 44, 56 (and then 3 picks in the 60’s)

Two picks before 26 (but after say 17) would be very enticing for them. There is no real point waiting until the draft to live trade pick 6 (5-7). Likely we will have pick 21 and need to target 19 (WC), 20 (Ade), 22, 23,24,25. F2 and another good pick would be where I would be heading.

Probably going to be difficult because the following two clubs already have two picks in that range:
Adelaide (20,25)
Sydney (22,24)

So our only hope is pick 19 (West Coast).

I’d say best we look at just trying to get two really good second round picks. If Henry is sold on going package him up with one of our thirds to get a good second:
38, Henry > 23; or
38, 47 > 28

Run with two good seconds.

Nothing wrong with $40

Someone will have to explain how they could even 'afford' that - surely they'd have to trade all of their futures for picks this draft? This will also make later draft picks more valuable in this draft than usual.

Yes it seems nuts at first glance but the 20% discount really comes into its own here. It’s not expected they will have any issues matching the bids. It will be interesting to see if they are able to keep hold of their F1 pick.
If they make finals (unlikely) they can only match 2 of the 3 in the top 20.

I doubt teams will bid so early on the ruckman and tiny midfielder. Walter will get a bid early, then watch as nobody cares about the other two until the teens or 20's. It's only Freo who get screwed with Henry. NGA picks that can be matched generally slide down before anyone bothers bidding.

Interesting that those last 3 are all WA kids.
Though WA were the weakest side in the champs this year.
Whoever gets Mckercher will have an absolute gun on their hands. My money is on Hawthorn snapping him up with the Launceston link there too 😫

I’m surprised no Ashton Moir or Jack Delean in top 30… would love one of them at freo pick

What about this Jack Callinan fella rated at 21? He fits as well. All sounds good to me, hopefully we land one with our first pick.

21. JACK CALLINAN

Position:
Medium forward

Size: 179cm

Clubs: Tasmania Devils/Clarence

A dynamic small forward who knows where the goals are and is dangerous both in the air and at ground level, while he can also pinch-hit in the midfield. After a disappointing first game for the Allies, Callinan — the son of former Crow Ian Callinan – was exciting across half-forward across the carnival, booting 5.3 and averaging 11 disposals to solidify his first-round chances. Callinan showed off impressive speed, footy nous and class, hence he finished with a competition-high eight score assists. It comes after his dominant start to his draft year in the Coates Talent League, booting 14.1 for Tassie from his first four games.

Sounds like the right type of player but the whole Tassie thing given 2028 makes me nervous.

I find the classification of a 5'11" forward as "medium forward" quite odd. I don't think a range of 179cm to 193cm is particularly clever. Medium forwards to me are guys big enough to play midfield, but play forward, which puts them at 183cm+
