Since when have they changed the weekly nom to volume of work instead of the best player for the week?
Hustwaite was clearly better then Johnson

Happens every year at this time of the year. I don't mind it and Hustwaite will get his chance next year, looks a player.

It’s written clearly in the criteria if you bother looking it up.
The AFLs main aim is to ensure the best performing 23 players eligible that season are nominated.
For us, Tom Emmett was much better than MJ but he was on debut too so he won’t be nominated.

Selection criteria:
  • A player must be under 21 years of age (1st January 2023) and played 10 or fewer games before the 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.
  • In general, a player judged to have played the best individual game of the round is to be the basis of the weekly nomination.
  • When several players are judged to have played at a reasonably similar level, previous rounds and year to date performances are then taken into account.
  • The priority is to have the best-performed 23 players nominated by the end of the season for consideration for the overall award. Therefore, in later rounds, year-to-date performances will be allocated increasing weight relative to performances in the round.
Weekly Selection Panel for 2023 AFL Rising Star:
Kevin Sheehan (Chairperson), Nathan Buckley, Jude Bolton, Kane Cornes, and Abbey Holmes.

Selectors will monitor all AFL matches noting 182 players across AFL lists are eligible for the award with one to be recognised each round.

2023 All Australian Selection Panel:
Laura Kane and Matthew Pavlich have joined the All Australian Selection Panel for the upcoming 2023 Toyota AFL Premiership Season.

The AFL would like to thank Nick Riewoldt and Brad Scott for their dedication and time as selectors over previous seasons.
All Australian Selection Panel:
Gillon McLachlan (Chairperson), Kevin Bartlett, Jude Bolton, Nathan Buckley, Kane Cornes, Andrew Dillon, Glen Jakovich, Chris Johnson, Laura Kane (new in 2023), Cameron Ling, Matthew Pavlich (new in 2023), and Kevin Sheehan (AFL Rising Star only).
At the conclusion of the home and away season, each selector shall nominate the five best-performed eligible players from the weekly nominees based on their performance during the home and away matches.

OK so given this weeks nominee will almost certainly certainly be based on output throughout the year, who can we expect to receive the nomination with a decent performance.

Long the front runner from West Coast, followed by Maric.
Erasmus from Freo (is he eligigble)?
Borlase from Crows? Probably hasn't played enough games.
Tsatas from Dons, would need a better than decent game though most likely.

Erasmus hasn’t done much to be honest (doesn’t help that he always sub). Long the most likely from that lot

Kenzie a chance if he kicks a few

To be fair, Johnson had two weeks through out the year that he had better games than the weekly winner, at least stat wise.

I considered him and then double checked and assumed he isn't eligible because he is in his third year, but I guess I have that wrong?

But yes him too then, although he is probably at the bottom of the pile.

Seems like Emmett isn't eligible smarty pants.

Sheezel should have been favourite long before Ashcroft went down, which is no slight on Ashcroft or the other extremely good nominations.

Statistically, he’s matched Daicos’ RS year (slightly exceeds in some key areas) playing in a team that’s lost 20 in a row. That is not even accounting for his smarts, ball use and little things that go unnoticed by most.

5 - Sheezel
4 - Ashcroft
3 - Amiss
2 - Owies
1 - who cares

Amiss should probably win but Vic bias 😆, not many key position players kick 40+ goals (assuming he gets 2 in the next 2 rounds. Especially coming off a kidney laceration last year robbing us of his first year and severely impairing his physical development.
Not that pesky Vic Bias again :drunk::drunk::drunk:

Honestly a little shocked Long didn't get it on the weekend for the body of work factor. For an 18 year old to play so many games in a dreadful side and keep grinding week in week out is a great job.

Menzie will be stiff if he misses out too.

Ford, Goater, Chesser, Lord will be others especially unlucky if they play out their eligibility without getting one. Erasmus victim of the sub rule really.

Anyone else who will be eligible next year probably has to play a blinder.

Robbo: "Sheezel should win the Rising Star"
Gerard: "I think Ashcroft should win it"

* off Gerard!

Not even a contest. Ashcroft rated elite in a total of zero categories

Was just weird the way you included a little dig at the end of your post at getting "easy" touches off half back, which was designed to downplay Sheezel's season.

The beauty of Sheezel is he's also played a number of different roles. He's been thrown into the middle and won clearances and even impacted games in the forward half (see Swans game and second WC game). He's just also been prolific behind the ball.
What's amazing is that he'd never played half back in his life, ever. Yet it's where he has predominantly played this year and been very good in a terrible side. Kid is a freak.

Ashcroft will get runner up in the rising star but winning goal of the year is a pretty good consolation prize

While I agree that Sheezel has performed better than Ashcroft, especially considering his unfortunate injury, the rating system is dumb. Sheezel’s 1.7 clearances is elite while Ashcrofts 3.6 is above average.

The position label accounts for so much when players move positions all the time.

Today in Tassie has officially coronated Sheezel as this year's rising star !

It's all over folks. Done and dusted.

And I am happy for him and long suffering North supporters. A shinging light and beacon of hope in one of the darkest periods in their history.
