Fort was rapt to be heading north back home. Unless he’s sick of home (as opposed to homesick) would be surprising to see him head to Radelaide, even for extra coin and more seniors game time (doesn’t come across as the type of player where that’s a high priority).

So for those who understand these things why are the Lions being so slow to sign up any of our uncontracted players this year - or is this just a normal time-line?

2023:
Harry Sharp
Marcus Adams
Rhys Mathieson (R)
Kai Lohmann
Callum Ah Chee (unconfirmed but likely)
Daniel Rich
Nakia Cockatoo (R)
James Madden
Deven Robertson
Dayne Zorko
Blake Coleman
Carter Michael (R)
Darryl McDowell-White jnr (R)
Ryan Lester (R)
Tom Fullarton
Conor McKenna (R)
Shadeau Brain (R)
Darragh Joyce (R)
2023:
Harry Sharp - This guy plus Fletcher has dedicated wings will be good - sign on
Marcus Adams - Delist
Rhys Mathieson (R) - Probably stays
Kai Lohmann - Only direct small replacement - sign on
Callum Ah Chee (unconfirmed but likely) - Plays all across the ground- sign on
Daniel Rich - Retires
Nakia Cockatoo (R) - Delist or re-rookie
James Madden - McKenna replacement?
Deven Robertson - Will sign on for 2 years as reported
Dayne Zorko - Retires
Blake Coleman - Not sure on this one, depends on others
Carter Michael (R) Refer to Blake
Darryl McDowell-White jnr (R) - probs on for another year
Ryan Lester (R) - gets another year
Tom Fullarton - depends on delists and draft
Conor McKenna (R) - Signs on
Shadeau Brain (R) - Signs on
Darragh Joyce (R) - Depends on trade period (multiple targets have been reported for KPD's)
Darcy Fort - Signs on

The club has done this before where they wait until the end of the season to choose who to sign on and who to delist, just not on this scale. I've got three delistings there due to retirement or injury, which will be for the mandatory draftee's, but I can see Lester, Joyce, Coleman, Mathieson, Cockatoo, Michael, Fullerton or Madden get cut as well depending on need.

Really depends on who is coming in and who the club sees as being long-term options, and who looks for a trade. Can't remember the last time anyone in the team (outside of McStay) looked elsewhere, but I could see Mathieson, Lester or Lyons move to another club.

FWIW, 9 News in Adelaide reported overnight that Port have inquired about Fort, who is also apparently off contract this year (not sure I saw his name on the OOC list).

If he moves on then we will need to bring in another back up ruck you'd think, or for ressie watches are the two younger guys (Lane/Smith) ready to go?

According to the link on the Roster Watch contract thread, Fort's contract length until 2024 was confirmed in a Danny Daly podcast...

fort has been a great acquisition as a back up ruck. if he felt like he had a shot at being the #1 ruck at another team during the tail end of his career i would not begrudge him leaving to pursue that oppurtunity.

wouldnt mind asking the question of sam hayes at port if fort were to head that way

Looking through the list of OOC rucks there are a few out there, age in brackets... Tom De Koning(23), Nick Bryan(21), Braydon Preuss(28), Matthew Flynn(25), Max Lynch(24), Sam Hayes(24), Scott Lycett(30), Toby Nankervis(28), Jordan Sweet(25).

I thought Nankervis was a lot older, seems to have been around for eons.

Jack Silvagni is a more than handy 2nd ruck, not sure he could fill in full time though, I am really warming to having a crack at him, Free Agent and only 25 years old and Vossy not a fan.

flynn definitely the best of that group as far as being a main ruck goes but i would imagine has a fair few suitors and would not move to sit behind big o

Obviously would rather keep Fort, but if he was to go, would it be worth inquiring about Moyle from the suns? Young but promising, and Suns are already getting the best ruck in the draft this year so he will be surplus.

Haven't seen much from White's son so far........experiment could be over.

Win the flag and Zorks probably retires, otherwise i suspect he will want one more year
Lester is bolted to the club, will get another year (Can he stay on Rookie list?).
Fullarton probably gets another year especially if Fort leaves and with our other two young rucks still developing.
Hope Dev stays.

After playing basketball for a while, we've only just started to see Fullerton see some form this season.
Wouldn't surprise me to see White take some time as well.

I can't see Zorko making it back into the team at the moment tbh.
  • McKenna, Coleman and Wilmott are better at the back
  • A midfield of Dunks, Bags, Neale, Ashcroft and Dev makes it too hard for him to get back in
  • Linc is playing the pressure role he would play in the midfield and up forward, then you've got Charlie as an unmovable. Maybe he can start up forward as the 3rd/4th small? There are no set players up there at the moment in those spots. Would prefer Bailey to stay up forward for whole games, but that isn't happening.

Fullerton needs to be seen as a forward if he is to ever make it into the current team.
As mentioned previously by another poster, Dev looks to be signing on to reach free agency. Will see what happens in two years.

IMO there is definitely room for a fully fit Dayne Zorko in our best 22, from the side that played against the Tigers he would come in for either Fletcher or Ah Chee... and while I would not be totally for it I could see the match committee deeming Robertson another possible out for Zorko.

This was last week's team. Zorko can take Ah Chee's spot in that line up.

People so quickly forget how valuable a healthy Zorko is to our side. IMO definitely best 22 if anywhere close to full health.
Don't think anyone doubts just how valuable he can be when he's fit. The problem is he hasn't been "properly fit" since about 2019 and at 35 years of age before the start of next season, I think the safer bet would be to assume that he will continue to battle these 'old man' injuries until the end of his career, whether that be this year or next.

Nothing we didn't already know but > from Fox Sports today.

BRISBANE LIONS

The Lions’ current list doesn’t have too many holes to fill after last year’s acquisitions at both the trade table and the draft. Interest has been expressed in Adelaide Crows defender Tom Doedee and there is also an eye being kept on Esava Ratugolea in a bid to bolster their key defensive stocks. It’s an area of focus for the Lions given Marcus Adams’ uncertain future as he continues to deal with the effects of concussion. A higher-priced option would be Harry Himmelberg, with the Giants swingman attracting interest from several clubs. Meanwhile West Australian Deven Robertson appears likely to snub a return to his home state and re-sign with Brisbane.

yep I believe he is our true barometer and when things get really tough and need a bit of aggro I believe Zorko is still the one, although Berry on occasions and to a lesser extent Cam have shown they don't mind a bit of argy bargy

Apparently Port have enquired about Darcy Fort, would be a shame if he leaves as I don’t think he really got a fair run
