Esava Ratugolea would be a perfect recruit IMO. OOC I believe? Nice size, recently gone down back and acquitted himself well. Would offer KPP and break-glass ruck coverage. Only 24 so development in him yet. Mobile but fairly accountable. Has flaws but anyone at his price will.

Could become something between Joel Patfull and Jason Roe for us.
Port bound most likely.

He's athletic yet so vanilla

Geelong's defence has been a lot better when he hasn't played and their other options have been fit - just too tall with him there and all he really does right now is go for intercept marks. Which is a great skill to have but given he hasn't played down back much yet he probably has scope to improve in terms of positioning etc.

It probably wouldn’t happen as we seem to be to loyal to Oscar, but with the ruck merry-go-round set to go round again this year, do we try for an upgrade?

I personally rate Oscar as a below average starting ruckman in the league, somewhere between say 11th and 14th. Can't see an obvious upgrade that wouldn't cost too much in the way of trade capital or salary cap.

Hayes from Port, Sweet from the Dogs and Flynn from GWS seem like potential options, though whether they'd come to be behind Oscar is a different conversation.

We're not playing Fort ahead of Oscar anyway.
What's the point in getting another one who is going to stay in reserves.

Yeah if we get another ruckman in, I hope it’s at the expense of Oscar in the seniors, as opposed to just taking Fort’s spot as a seat warmer.

I think because of where I personally rate Oscar in terms of starting rucks, I think any improvements would cost more trade capital and/or salary cap than I'd like to spend on a ruck.

The dream would be if one of Lane or Smith came on.

Yeah, fair. Although you can’t have your starting no.1 ruckman get dominated as convincingly as he was last night. I guess the argument to that would be is the other top teams don’t have a Gawn as their starting ruckman either, so Oscar shouldn’t be exposed as much.

Flynn played well against O earlier in the year IIRC

I know the Grundy pick up has been rightfully whacked a fair bit, but one thing it has meant is that Gawn is less beat up at this point in the season compared to previous ones. It would not surprise me to see him come home strong, especially against ruckman who haven't had the same chop out this season.

Of course I'm not excusing how poor Oscar was last night.

We should definitely try for a ruck but I wouldn’t be over paying for one. We can win it with Oscar he’s good enough without being sensational. I’d prioritise an intercept defender with good decision making and ball use. Payne can lockdown ok and intercept but his decision making with the ball is poor. Andrews takes an eternity to get rid of the ball so when he marks it there is no real transition threat.

I'd be retiring our 4 oldest players this season if possible ie. Zorko(OOC), Rich(OOC), Gunston(2024), Lyons(2024) + Adams unlikely to play again.

Then look at a couple of free agents in the 25-26 age bracket, there are a few out there eg. Tom Doedee, Jack Silvagni, Darcy Parish, Mason Redman, Harry Himmelberg(27 though), Matthew Flynn.

2-3 of our out of contract guys will probably be delisted as well, not sure how it works with list spaces so may not be able to move that many on in one go particularly as our draft hand this year is poor. Maybe we play next year a couple short of the maximum allowable list number.

Which makes me ask the question, why don't we give Oscar a rest?

We know he gets worn out at the end of the season, we have Fort who can do almost as good a job. So even if we think Oscar is our number 1 and will be for finals, when do we make sure he is fit for finals?
