Right when one considering we have a new coaching regime with a hunger for success. Who survives into 2024. all OOC at seasons end

  1. Hall
  2. Bonar
  3. Comben
  4. Howe
  5. Perez
  6. Free
  7. Greenwood
  8. Mahony
  9. Ziebell
  10. Archer
  11. Edwards
  12. Goater
  13. Turner
  14. Young
  15. Bergnan
  16. Spicer
  17. Goldy
Wow that's a lot but not much of a lot.

Also as we have 2 first rounders how do we get pick 1 if as a suspect we aint finishing last. We have some guys that have currency that while being good aren't necessarily important due to having others similar.

I want pick one we need to be aggressive.
  1. Hall - retire
  2. Bonar- delist
  3. Comben - 2 yr deal
  4. Howe- undecided
  5. Perez- 2 yr deal
  6. Free- unknown
  7. Greenwood - delist
  8. Mahony - delist
  9. Ziebell - retire
  10. Archer - 1 year deal
  11. Edwards - undecided
  12. Goater - 3 yr deal
  13. Turner - delist
  14. Young- 2 yr deal
  15. Bergnan- 2 yr deal
  16. Spicer- delist
  17. Goldy- 1 yr deal
That’s my take before the season
Will be interesting to see how it pans out

As good as Reid looks like being - it’d be pretty stupid to trade 2+ first rounders in this super draft. Where there’s potentially top line players with our needs in mind.

pretty similar with my opinion, just get a few bookends to add for mine, iam not as bullinsh on chom though and edwards would wanna show something sooner rather than later. i would have thought chom has got to the point where we just go year to year, getting vibes hes gonna be a long term 50 gamer like taylor garner was, in fact hes not even tracking on that trajectory!

22. Goldy

Ol’ man river keeps rolling along & whose to say 23 will be his last season. I don’t reckon he is ready to handover to X et al just yet.The tap work & ability to get round the ground remain his strengths although he dropped off in the last third of both the last two seasons. Will play an important role with the young mids. Hopefully the plan of playing him as a part time forward is over cos he ain’t a forward.

23. BMac

Our no 1 priority for re-signing this year. The recruitment of Griff should allow him to be more than just a lock down defender & develop his intercept & rebounding skills although he will still take the No 1 key forward. Has the courage to play in front & back himself. Criminally underrated across the competition he will lead a new look defensive structure & is now a young veteran down back at 25 and after only 52 games.

Not sure why this is relevant tbh. X player won’t be in their prime isn’t an answer IMO.

Dogs have just set their spine up for the next decade + despite their midfield being in their prime.
WB have just had an all-time run of f/s prospects. They could be competitive while adding young talent. I don't think thats a realistic comparison.

When we are on the verge on a competitive team then we need to fill gaps and get good.

They also added Naughton & Busslinger via first round picks.

Bontempelli was 23 when they added Naughton. Similar to LDU if we were to draft Archer Reid this year. Not to mention Macrae, Libba were all older, whilst Phillips, Powell, Wardlaw are all younger.

Bet they’re not regretting their decision.

Quite like the way our 1st round picks will have doubled up 3 times over 4 years. Default is bringing in 1x 1st round talent each year.

Bringing in 3x 1st round pairings - 2020, 2022, 2023 - is a great way to have a cluster of elite talent who can all peak together. Even if it was by circumstance more than design it could be an unintended gain anyway.

Whats your point? Its a different situation. They had won a premiership a year earlier.

If we are looking good this year, other than a big hole somewhere, then we should consider options to fill that hole.

My point is we aren’t in a position to not take best available. I’m not bothered about how long it takes for them to be able to perform at AFL level, just get me the best player long term.

I'd argue our demise after 1999 - along with many other successful reigns - was actually brought about by not continually reinvesting in our list.

We sold out quality young players plus heaps of picks in 1999 for experienced players and were never the same from 2000 onwards.

In a parallel world we hold on Mooney, take a 1st rounder for Welsh and draft in guys like Giansiracusa and Enright (taken with our picks) to keep the list ticking over.

What I'm talking about would still be adding to our young talent. We could have two top 10 picks next year. I'm not talking about trading them both for a 30 year old.

What if the best available is a 22 year old with some development already, rather than an 18 year old roll of the dice?

That's fair enough. Would have to be a case by case consideration.

As a rule it's a slippery slope when clubs (even successful ones) start flirting too much with trading out of 1st rounds.

Sydney were able to do so knowing they had COLA then academy free hits while Geelong did it while being able to execute some very odd side deals with the franchises to keep themselves in the game.

It’s a case by case basis. This year as an example, I’m not trading another first in a “super draft” for a player.

Gifting Port Butters once in my lifetime is enough.

Would be depend on which pick we were trading and the upside of the 22yo.
There would be a fair few factors. But we should be asking around. I obviously wouldn't want to do an overpay.

But if we are looking like we are on a really good trajectory, with a big hole at CHF, then we would be crazy to not be in Ben King's ear. Isn't he OOC in 2024?

We can offer him a move to Melbourne, with a great role in a good, young side, under Clarkson.

Yes, of course it would be case by case. It would depend on the player, the pick, the cost, how well we play, how the key forward prospects look...

You could say the same thing happened at the hawks, their list is putrid, they burnt through so much draft stock picking up speculative talent, trying to milk that last flag.

I wonder how Clarko reflects on this, I wonder if he’d do things differently this time around.

Had exactly the same thought. Although it was via FA it felt like Vickery was that Pagan-Calthorpe/Olarenshaw overreaching moment in their list lifecycle.

He's the natural option and apart from injury one of the few who would come with no other (character) queries.

Any player we could dislodge out of another Victorian club would be setting off alarm bells for mine.

If a player talented enough at 22yo to command a top 10 pick via trade wanted out of their club to move crosstown, I'd want to be doubly, triply sure they don't have other issues in play.

An example would be Bailey Smith. He demands a trade to North Melbourne, I'd be more wary than excited after taking in all the variables of the situation.

  1. Hall – Retire
  2. Bonar – Delist
  3. Comben – 2 Year Contract
  4. Howe – 1 Year Contract? Honestly don't know enough about this guy to say.
  5. Perez – 1 Year Contract
  6. Free – Delist
  7. Greenwood – Retire / Delist
  8. Mahony – Delist
  9. Ziebell – Retire
  10. Archer – 2 Year Contract
  11. Edwards – 1 Year Contract
  12. Goater – 2 Year Contract
  13. Turner – Retire / Delist / Leave / Whatever just go FFS
  14. Young – 2 Year Contract
  15. Bergman – 1 Year Contract
  16. Spicer – Delist
  17. Goldy – 1 Year Contract

4 X 2 Year Contracts
5 X 1 Year Contracts
4 X Delist
4 X Retire

So 9 out of 17 stay and 8 gone.

Those numbers feel about right for me.

24. Powelly

Like most of our mid group had a dose of second year blues last year, but what we saw in 21 should get us excited. Great vision & hands to match. A fit Cunners and addition of of Sheils provides experience & hard bodies that should fast track his development. Llike the other mids he will rotate thru the forward line & will need to improve his forward craft to make an impact there. A lot to look forward to.
