If you include say 2 more quality kids from this draft, who thinks we have enough talent to eventually give us a shot at the big prize?

This season has really dented my confidence in the list even with the emergence of Sheez and Warlord.
I thought 70% of our problems were coaching related, but we are still not winning this year with coaching upgrades?

One of our biggest hurdles will be replacing/upgrading some of our talls.

A first-rounder if he leaves: How a deal for this Giant can impact the draft

Highly sought key-position free agent Harrison Himmelberg is all but certain to fetch a first-round draft pick in compensation – reshaping the draft and trading landscape for other clubs – if he opts to leave the club.

Himmelberg’s contract offer to stay with Greater Western Sydney – estimated by industry insiders to be more than $700,000 per season over five years – virtually ensures that he would earn his current club a first-round compensation pick if he departed as a restricted free agent.

Sydney is among a host of clubs who have shown interest in the 27-year-old, who has not met with rival clubs and is yet to decide on his future, according to a source familiar with Himmelberg’s intentions.

A GWS club source said that the Giants would also consider matching any contract offer if they felt they could gain a better deal than the compensation selection. GWS took this step when superstar free agent Jeremy Cameron was crossing to Geelong, earning the club three late first-rounders rather than one first-round choice.

Should Himmelberg leave – on a contract that earns a first-round pick, in the manner of Joe Daniher moving on from Essendon in 2020 – the Giants would very likely enter the trade period with three top-10 selections, allowing them to make a strong bid for prospective pick No.1 Harley Reid by striking a deal with West Coast, or to make another significant trade.

It would also push back other clubs’ selections in the opening round. On current ladder standings, GWS hold picks eight and 10 – the latter from Richmond (secured in the Jacob Hopper deal).

If Himmelberg left and earned a first-round compensation, they would have picks 8, 9 and 10 – similar to Essendon when Daniher and Adam Saad departed. The Tigers and Giants have their bye this weekend, so could lose ground to Gold Coast, Geelong, and Fremantle on the ladder and move up the draft pecking order.

As with Daniher and the Lions, a club bidding for Himmelberg would recognise that they would find it easier to pay him enough to earn the top level of free agent compensation – more than $800,000, list managers believe – than to hand over picks or a player in a trade.

While excellent compensation is assured if Himmelberg opted to leave, the Giants sorely want to retain him, recognising his value as a key-position player who can play at both ends. He is one of the best of a relatively weak field of free agents, headed by Essendon pair Darcy Parish and Mason Redman. The club says there has been no sign that Himmelberg wishes to leave.

GWS have less need for picks than for retaining their better players and building maturity in a list that regularly loses recruits who wish to either go home or to find better opportunities or a contract that the Giants cannot afford.

The club has indicated they would explore a trade for pick No.1 and the rights to Victorian country teenager Reid, whom West Coast would have the rights to if they remain 18th.
The Eagles opted to split pick No.2 into a pair of first-rounders (eight and 12) in 2022, drafting locals Reuben Ginbey and Elijah Hewett.

This deal was part of the overlapping trades that enabled Jason Horne-Francis to become a Port Adelaide player, North Melbourne to move from pick one to picks two and three (Harry Sheezel and George Wardlaw) and the Giants to move up to the first selection (Aaron Cadman).

Ahh yes... GWS get a band 1 for Himmelberg, whilst North get Band 3 for Mckay. Another day in the life of a North supporter...

I think we would be stupid if we didnt offer McKay at least $700K.

So then any offer from other clubs would have to be $750K to $800K, which would guarantee us Band 1.

If we have gone in with a $600K offer and McKay leaves for $650 to $700K, then we have shot ourselves in the foot.

For an extra $100K, we could have had pick 3

$100K is not going to break our salary cap long term, especially if we front end it.

I find it interesting over the last couple of days Cal Twomey has said multiple times we haven't put a contract offer forward to Mckay yet.

Is that because his management isn't talking to us or that he's put off talks for a while?

Hope we haven’t gone after Doodee, would’ve been a good recruit pre-knee, but missing most of next year wouldn’t be ideal from a list management perspective

Feels like the Swans to me. They'll be cashed up and going after every KPP in the FA market.

That's because Himmelberg is a proven gun who can play either end, has finals wins under his belt etc.

Let's be honest, if we spent Band 1 compo on an injury prone 25 year old who has played 55 games and is still playing on potential rather than results which is what Ben McKay actually is, people would storm Arden Street looking to hang Brady by his nostril hairs.

Hmm, tricky one. Even though yes, the father sons push your pick back, it's a player you didn't really have access to in the first place, so doesn't necessarily reduce the pool of available players to that club.
It does, though. If you have pick 10 and 3 F/S go in the top 10 then you are now drafting the 13th best player who is coming into the comp.

I'm happy for F/S to still exist but the payment to match the bid should hurt the club more. You shouldn't be able to get pick 1 with some picks in the 30s.

Its not that simple.
What if he goes to Port Adelaide and becomes a Premiership CHB, All Australian and plays the next 7 years there?
And all we got was a pick in the 20's for him as compensation.
Would you be happy then?

Because the McKay who played against the Bombers and Saints didnt look like a player playing on potential to me. He looked like a player who could be the missing piece to teams coming into the Premiership window.

Dont forget, he started the season injured.

Interesting. My immediate counter was going to be James Frawley but a head to head comparison was informative - Frawley was a significantly better performed player at the same age.

That said if the big galoot does up and go fingers crossed a seller's market emerges and drives compensation to Band 1. A club like Collingwood can just spread his wage into a future coterie manager role of such if things go south. (Daniel Wells likes this)

Doedee: does he make sense as an acquisition?

Victorian. Fills clear list need. Efficient user and good interceptor. Ex team mate Lynch could help facilitate the deal.

Would be 27 next season so fills our demographic need for older players too.

Current regime already shown it’s prepared to enlist talent when there’s no short term gain (see George). Might return to playing towards end of next year tho.

ACL would diminish likelihood of ridiculous rival offers. Can’t imagine managers phone has been running hot over past month.

Ticks North’s good character box. Was next in line as captain until Dawson came along.

RFA so possibly no draft capital required. But if McKay leaves, would mess with compo.

In that case, Would Crows accept a third rounder? given he’s just done a second ACL and he’s currently crowded out by Worrell and Michalanney et al, can’t imagine they’d be matching higher than band 3 compo? To say nothing of rumoured Redman trade.

Other uncertainty from a recruiting clubs perspective would be whether he can play at the same standard after a second ACL.
No more guys with injury issues

If gws and us both get Band 1 - do we trade pick 3 for picks 8 and 9

Then go to draft with picks 2,8,9 and 17
GWS can then trade 3 and 11 for pick 1 if they want

So I think we can all agree that’s exactly how Ben McKay is playing, as. 650k player. Similar to Ben Brown time…
So he obviously believes he is worth more. And quite possibly is if he was able to put consistent games together.

But that’s just not happening.

OR

North have settled on this number not phased if he stays or goes, full knowing they can match the bid and get a compo?

I don’t understand why not, we go in with the strategy all publicity is good publicity.
We could guarantee a whole lot of on-air time, he be in the thick of the action playing down back with us.

That's smart. We can also offer him a lot of inadvertent newspaper coverage because we feature in at least 1x major off-field story each year, usually unrelated to anything our football club actually did.
