This idea of getting Shiel as a salary dump is all well and good. But he won't be moving unless we offer up a contract more than the year he has left on his current contract.
We really want to be giving him 3 years?
Surely he would be happy taking an extra year at a discount? Currently 1 year at 750k, maybe 2 years at 1.2 million? Only 450k for the 2nd year

SOS and Gubby would have been involved with getting him at GWS, he's the type of mid Lyon would like. Quick with poor kicking but can still win his own ball. Dow and him are really similar types too. Would give us a unique game style.
That was donkey’s years ago.

He’s now aging and injury prone. You’d hope they’ve moved on, except, as I said, as a means to an end.

As much as Essendon fans say they have no cap pressure they've just signed Parish to a mega deal, Redman contract would be huge too and they're getting McKay. There'll be cap pressure.
List managers look 3, 4, 5 years down the road.
They might want to target a FA next year and are banking the Shiel salary.

They might have cap space now but we don't know what is backhanded going down the track.

No, Finnis is gone.

Bassat is the puppeteer now.

Blindly believe whatever you want.

Toce has runs on the board. SOS & Gubby are good operators. Satan is more focused on ridding the club of debt than ridding the club of underperforming players.
Hope you’re right. Bassett has his fingerprints on everything that’s happened over the last 10 years. Him, and the rest of the board, should have fallen on their swords when they sacked Ratten. Their incompetence is why we’ve done bugger all for 10 years.

Lyon was a shrewd move. Doesn’t make up for all their bad ones. Not yet, anyway.

That's "center" clearances, which begs the question, "was he attending ballups"?
He attended plenty of centre bounces this year.

The "above average" and "elite" rankings take into account the percentage of cba (centre bounce attendences) he had this year vs the amount of centre clearances he won.

Therefore him dropping from 'elite' to 'above average' means his ratio of cbas to centre clearance wins dropped substantially this year compared with the last 3 years

Proving my point Kernal

“In late 2009 Ball was offered a contract described in the book as "much reduced", but by then Lyon had lost faith in him.”

It was about the $. He was at Collingwood touring the facility in June 09.

How was he wasn’t sacked when he was offered a contract?

He walked.

Sounds very Herald Sunnish to me

This is what I think - the Bombers have someone in mind next year or 2025 and are getting their cap organised. Some will say Shiels salary is only next year, but it allows them to organise themselves better.

Can't really work out who they would go for though, English is the big rfa next year but I'm sure they aren't into him. Marshall (Todd) and Zurhaar as well but they're not the kind of players requiring a godfather offer I would have thought.

Bassat has been on the board since 2016.

Sacking an entire board when all they did was accept the CEO’s recommendation would be pretty drastic you’d think.

We’d probably be led by GTs dentist now [emoji33]

Pretty insulting to offer one of your better players a "much reduced" contract. Clearly Lyon got it wrong but it was too late to pull the reigns.

Probably pointless arguing the toss about whether he was a mercenary or the club did him wrong... the wash up was another good player gone for nought.

Post our loss to GWS I was struck by the comments Ross made about aiming for the long term. He even quoted Gill in giving him that advice.

They can’t look to the long term just trundling along with the draft picks we have, and missing out again on Free Agents and good trades.

I am not advocating it but moving out top players who may not be there in 3/4 years when we really might contend may not be out of the question. Depends what we get back. That’s why I wouldn’t discount Steele going.

Would have to be good. But if it was? I would do it. Bad short term, but I don’t think that is what is in mind. Who else? Gresham, Howard, Clark?

I would be surprised if we do nothing left field.

Ball’s $ vastly exceeded his output by 09.

GT’s fault imo.

Put all his boys on mega contracts that hamstrung us in being able to recruit the final few key players to put us over the top.

Andrew Lovett or Shaun Burgoyne anyone?

Even Lyon so far has been a huge win because standards had dropped so far but only time will tell if it's a proper win. That said I think he's more the Paul Roos fixer than the next premiership coach so not overly concerned.

Looking at Mcrae and Kingsley types there is a real energy and vibrancy coming from the coaches box though. Lyon is playing it well but I'm not sure we see the same Lyon that the players do. So far he's ben an excellent fit and seems to have a knack for getting buy in to his system.

Hopefully we aren't training a group of steam train engineers at the start of the modern age. I guess we needed to get the baseline up to standard before we even thought about a new coach or it would have been Lethlean, Gags and Rath building the list and just a change of head coaches. Lyon seems very ground up.

All boards have a life span though. They have overseen one of our worst periods since the AFL era and made mistake after mistake. Even getting some fresh eyes and ideas over the place would have been good. If this rebuild ends in tears they'll have to go surely or everyone else has given up. I don't care if the guy is a dentist or lawyer or what. If someone is throwing their hat in the ring, at least they're prepared to have skin in the game.

I'm not sure Bassett has done that much wrong aside from not taking a firm stance earlier than he did. As a board member there's only so much you can control and you're not there to direct the show anyway.
All our current problems stem from who was in charge during the immediate post Lyon era. Waldron l think it was.

Salary cap stuffed
Dicked Ross around with his next contract
Moved us to Seaford
Appointed the Dwarf
Appointed the Pelican
Appointed Richo
Destroyed the club in total.

Finnis comes in.
Keeps Richo for ever and a day
Turns footy dpt into a social justice experiment
Extends Ratts

Finnis extended Ratts. Finnis.
Not Bassett

Lets see how they go now without Finnis.

They have loads of room in their SC
And they will be going all out for Ben King an offer he can’t refuse
