The reason they want to trade pick 4 is for points for their academy kids.
Not necessarily. They don’t want it to get eaten up by bids. They have enough points and can go into deficit next year

We need to move on from talking about our past players , we are all glad Acres has found a home where he is settled and playing good football but it must be remembered he was more or less moved on from Fremantle and only got picked up by Carlton on a low ball offer from Carlton which was said to of been around 300k.
Spot on. Good on him for making a career for himself at his 3rd club. Maybe that's exactly what he needed to revive his career.

We've also benefited a lot from players taking their careers to a new level after joining us from somewhere else. Thats just football - you get some that go each way.

I’m probably going to talk about it for a bit longer 😜

I’m still gutted about matty lappin.

How do you jnow this?

The Herald Sun's was reporting thr biggest earners, why would they leave a large part of his earned wage off?

600k obviously isn't enough as McStat early that, but if 750 gets you band one than 650k would be close to band 2. Especially with Gresham's age, he is as young as you can get for a FA
I'll leave it there actually. The last 5 pages have done it to death.

My takeaway is that Gresh isn't worth more than a band 3 worthy sum of money. And l think he's finding that out right about now.

And who said he didn’t put in other pre seasons?
He’s been plagued by injuries - back, broken leg etc.
He may not have become the player we all hoped for but who are we to decide that he doesn’t/hasn’t had pride in his performance thus far?

There’s never been an issue with JB’s work ethic.

You’re correct, he’s too critical of himself if anything.

I'm guessing this has already been covered somewhere but maybe someone can explain for the simpletons amongst the forum here like myself about the scenario below.

If we can get a benchmark of what band 1 compo is looking like with McKay, and the AFL seemingly committed to giving them that level of compo as an unofficial part of an assistance package (eg. Dees and Frawley) surely we just watch that space with Gresh and look to deal with whoever can offer the same?

I realise he may not be the same value on the market with a good KPD in demand, but could we not also organise another sort of arrangement with the club most interested where we take a salary dump type of player off their hands or even a favourable pick swap of second round picks or something to get them over the line to inflate Gresham's contract? The AFL has accepted salary dump type deals before.

Let's say it's Essendon, if we could get them to commit to a 5 year $850,000 a year deal and AFL agrees that is band 1, then couldn't we separately later in the trade period look to trade them say Hunter Clark with us paying part of his salary? Or us doing a favourable pick swap with them to essentially pay in draft upgrades rather than salary cap?

Agree. We just have to keep making good decisions now, and to keep drafting and trading well.

Toce seems to have a much better eye than his predecessors.

AND to keep the admin types like Lethlean and Bains the hell away from list management. Letting those two play out their boyhood dreams in our football department is a huge reason why we got to where we were with our list two years back.

Another 2 to 3 first rounder?

Hard to envisage how that can happen now.
Getting just one extra first round pick looks dependent on getting a good return for Howard. Not sure we can get two or three extra first round selections. That is unless you actually believe Steel would go, which would seem madness to me.

Hopefully. But so far the dream of getting in a bunch of extra second round draft picks, and say one first round selection looks to be fading.

I am happy with Henry, and Dow (both of whom will consume pics to acquire), but I just wish we can land more decent extra picks than now seems likely in order to give Toce some decent ammunition to work with.
I think you’re missing my point about this first rounders.

Jon Ralph this morning made the point that Greshams next contract is rising.

If we assume it was band 3. Band 2 is end of first round.

That’s 2 first round picks if we include our own.

Surely you’re only moving Howard for a first.

That’s your third

Thank you for clearing that up. I thought you meant another 2-3 as additional to the 1 we had. ie 3-4 in total.

Whereas you meant another year where we have 2-3 first rounders. ie 2-3 in total.
And yes I personally would only let Howard go for a first rounder.

It hinges then on Gresh, if he goes, generating end of first round compo. Though depending on how all the Academy and FS picks go, and any other FA Compo picks, that will somewhere in the low 20s.

ok i did a search and Toce is actually a guy named Toce,

St Kilda’s National Recruiting Manager = Chris Toce

can someone clear the other one up that is annoying me,probably for a 3rd straight year of reading this board, please

TROUT?
= Tony "Trout" Elshaugh

After retiring from playing AFL football, Elshaug was a premiership playing coach at Dandenong (VFA) in 1991, then moved straight into a role as regional manager for the Eastern Ranges, in the newly established TAC Cup, which had only just replaced the former VFL/AFL Under 19s competition. After two years at Eastern, Elshaug became an assistant coach to Denis Pagan at the North Melbourne Football Club.[1] He was an assistant under Pagan for thirteen years, at North Melbourne from 1994 until 2002, and then at Carlton Football Club from 2003 until 2006. In 2007, he moved to the St Kilda Football Club.[2] Throughout his coaching career, he has been involved in developmental, senior assistant, and reserves gameday coaching roles. He resigned from his coaching in the middle of the 2010 season for personal reasons,[1] then returned to St Kilda as the recruiting manager in 2011.[3] He stepped down as the List Manager on 15 June 2018.

And on the infamous Petracca over McCartin decision by Elshaugh, Bain and Richo:

"If we go for the best player and we think Petracca is in front, we’re going to have to pay a million plus to get the forward we need. The market is saying that now. So let's get one in now and get him to fall in love with our footy club.

So yes they knew Petracca was the better player, but panicked that they may have to buy a in a FF later at the Franklin/Boyd contract levels. That and that Trout thought that Petracca had too big an ego!

If they get a bid on Walter before pick 4, it WILL be eaten up by bids.

If they want to maximise their draft , they can trade pick 4 for a good player, then get all their academy picks.
If they don't want a player they can go shopping for points.

You are probably right. We'd need a big offer from a low struggling club like North or Hawks to get band 2 and that doesn't seem to be where the interest is coming from.

I think he's worth more to us than thr pick. Especially at his age we have very little quality between King and Steele.

His agent will know what bracket we will match.

It’s part of the dance.

Essendon won’t be wanting to pay picks. The lure is the fact the cost of the player is free.

So the salary component will have to work in those regards.

And plus, maybe it’s just me. But I can’t imagine Gresham leaving us for a band 3 compo type of salary.

He isn’t a bad footballer and we want to keep him.
