So then our dream scenario is Howard and Gresham leaving to Sydney and Essendon and us ending up with

Pick 11 (Sydney) Pick 12 (us) pick 13 (Gresham compo)

Then trade the lot to the Eagles for pick 1.
Then pick someone no one’s ever heard of 🤪

What I’m getting at, is that I imagine he would sustain that higher level of form should he re-sign, as he is no longer eyeing off leaving.
Don't know that I agree with that. I'd imagine he put more effort in, because of a lack of interest from other clubs. Once he gets that contract, he'll go back to the normal Gresham of the last few years.

Happens far too often that one of our players has a great year when they're coming out of contract, then it's right back to square one once they have their security blanket.

Not sure that narrative flies. Sure we have turned over a big chunk of the list but none of those delisted/traded players have done anything anywhere else (apart from Acres little purple patch).

You could argue we got to 2017 because we stayed the course with the 2010 list for too long. Fact is, had we done a Hawthorn type clean out in 12/13 we would likely be in a very good position now. We have been too stable and held on to players that clearly weren’t going to make us contenders for too long.

I think we have finally got a reasonable core but they have to be aggressive in pruning/recruiting because we don’t have a top 4 list.

Bruce and Hickey both played in GFs after leaving us too. Newnes had a decent run at Carlton as well. We turned a bunch of GOPs into more GOPs. If we'd gone back and drafted it might have made some sense. We still lack quality not depth.

We just drafted badly ...we turned over players. Impatentice has been our downfall for 20 years. Trying to cheat the system hasn't been our friend and knowing who to hold and who to move on is how good sides stay up and something that we've struggled with due to a lack of footy department spend.

This has been his worst year for years. Injury has messed his seasons up but form was good.

Agree on the drafting, it has been our single biggest failure. But I can’t think of any player that we have let go that I wish we didn’t. I don’t think Newnes or Bruce or Hickey made any difference to our trajectory. They can play support roles but none were going to become a Gawn or a Rozee.

Our poor drafting and recruiting resulted in the high turnover in the last 6 or 7 years. As they say, you can’t polish a …….

Last couple of years we seem to have got a few things right so the challenge in future is not to weed out GOPs it is to hold on to talent.

Letting them go didn't help us though.
Not in the slightest.

Goodness me. That would be extraordinary. Consecutive picks in the mid-first round.

Which the beggars the question, if that dream scenario played out, what would we do with those three picks? How do our guys rate this draft?

Some people would argue that we upgrade two of the picks for a top 5 pick. Or trade the 3 picks for a top 2 pick and a couple of late 1st/early 2nd rounders.

What about us allowing Toce/Roughead to use the three picks at the draft table? If they nail all three then in one stroke the remaining regeneration of the team has been fast tracked at the speed of light.

Yeah, complete fantasy I reckon. Would potentially be the AFL trading coup of the century.

If we could get just one first rounder for either Howard or Gresham we are making like bandits.

Well I’m not going to deconstruct the last 10 years to see the results of our various delistings but I have always advocated hard core rebuilds. I don’t see the point of maintaining an average list and if you are not in or headed to top 4 then you have an average list.

It all depends on what is available in the draft. Most of us have an idea that pick one is better than early teens picks. But who is available at those picks?
Given that we want to add talent to our list, would we better getting three mid first round picks or the number one in isolation?
In the above scenario we’d also be giving away two best 18 players and bringing in three 18 year old unknowns (or one unknown 18 year old).

If dogs and melb only offer picks that get chewed up anyway it does.

In my scenario they get their kids + Howard ( maybe we pay a certain amount of his contract)

Yep, our only hope is either we have something different that they want (a player) and/or the F1 is attractive to them (they already have quite a few picks this year, so they don’t need to turn absolutely all of pick 4 into picks this year).

Separately, wonder if Membrey would be useful to Melbourne? They probably need a taller tall to help Rooyen, but they definitely need another option up there. (And I know that Membrey still helps us ….)

Did you support getting rid of Goddard and Dal Santo?

Yes. I thought we should have gone further. List was clearly in decline in 2011 and we still had players with currency.

But as Gringo said, our drafting from 11-18 was so appalling that nothing seemed to pay off.

I really like the way Hawks are going about it. But I also get that some supporters get very attached to players and such hard core rebuilds are not always popular.

Then trade the lot to the Eagles for pick 1.
They wouldn’t bite.

But it beats melbournes and the dogs offers for the suns pick. So if you want a hypothetical dream to be sold……..

Saints grab pick 4 and keep 11.

12 + 13 to the suns.

At the Suns pick your taking a Duursma/Mckercher.

potentially looking at Sanders/Caddy/O’Sullivan at 11 - which are 3 very different options.

Christ gringo2011 would probably try and bed SOS if any of this eventuated.

I wanted McLean from the Swans.

I'll settle for Chol from the Suns.

Tell Hayes he needs to learn how to play in defence from here on. He can be the new Jason Blake 'Mr Fix it". Caminiti is 1st in for any injury to King/Chol/Sharman. Membrey pure depth/done.

On a fortune isn’t he?

The positive thing with Blake Acres performing so well is that other clubs will be looking at our list and wondering if there are any more gems in the rough.

This can only ramp up our trade options and their value which gives us options which we actually need ... that is a decent midfield.

We need to trade, we need to improve our deficiencies. We finally have decent development, coaching, management, facilities .. which has lacked for the last decade.

Don't see any our our past mistakes as a negative, see them as a opportunity.

RIP Ron Barassi. Saw him play at Carlton when I was a kid.

Signed a 4 year deal for about 500-600k.

Might have been backended but I'd take him and put another year or two in to smooth it out.

If he's on 600k a year that's a great deal IMO.
