Goodness me. That would be extraordinary. Consecutive picks in the mid-first round.

Which the beggars the question, if that dream scenario played out, what would we do with those three picks? How do our guys rate this draft?

Some people would argue that we upgrade two of the picks for a top 5 pick. Or trade the 3 picks for a top 2 pick and a couple of late 1st/early 2nd rounders.

What about us allowing Toce/Roughead to use the three picks at the draft table? If they nail all three then in one stroke the remaining regeneration of the team has been fast tracked at the speed of light.

If you want a good inside mid, you'd be disappointed.
Probably end up with a ruckman, a defender and a hb flanker.

I've been thinking he's gone at the end of the year, all year long, but this is the most comfortable position to be in really. The market sets his contract price and/or level of compensation and we get to make a binary decision - he's either good value and we keep him or he provides resources that helps work towards a bigger opportunity.

Either way, it's a good position to be in, he's like having an old cow - you can use him to plough the field or eat him, depending on what you value the most.
That’s an interesting analogy!!

Yep, our only hope is either we have something different that they want (a player) and/or the F1 is attractive to them (they already have quite a few picks this year, so they don’t need to turn absolutely all of pick 4 into picks this year).

Separately, wonder if Membrey would be useful to Melbourne? They probably need a taller tall to help Rooyen, but they definitely need another option up there. (And I know that Membrey still helps us ….)
As we found out with Stuv, players who have mental health breaks lose all trade value.
I was in the trade Membrey camp three months ago but i the few games he's played this year he was very different to under Ratts and much better for it.

We don't know if Hayes will ever get himself right and Hammer needs more development. With 1 more year on his contract we should keep Timmy and wrap our arms around him.
After that he'll retire or stay on for substantially less money.

What do you reckon was the problem with Adams- seems to me like a player who just needed more time for development. Maybe the club is falling back into the quick fix mentality?
I've got suspicions, I think there's a step change in player expectations, the young group being led by our academy boys plus Phillipou and NWM are the ones pushing standards.

We've had talk of a drinking culture at the club, Seb Ross saying how he's been motivated by the training standards of the younger players certainly worried me. Mason Wood the only senior player being cited as an example to follow by the younger players. What was it? 30 players getting PBs in the time trials! Something very wrong with training standards in previous years. The perception that the Saints like the Bombers, Doggies and Carlton have been very comfortable places to play football. Things are arse about.

Oscar Adams being convicted of drink driving after a car accident in Feb 22 and falling asleep in team meetings wouldn't fill the coaches with confidence, all sorts of excuses and allowances will be made for a flagrant talent but if he's not a flagrant talent and you've got contemporaries spending every available in the gym and succeeding, doing everything they can to get the most out of their talent on one hand and something to compare with, maybe Oscar is just dragging the chain too much.

Maybe, just maybe the names of players being put up for trade Gresh, Howard and Clark are senior players that are part of the problem and not seen to be the answer, we'll never know because we can only see from the outside.

The positive thing with Blake Acres performing so well is that other clubs will be looking at our list and wondering if there are any more gems in the rough.

This can only ramp up our trade options and their value which gives us options which we actually need ... that is a decent midfield.

We need to trade, we need to improve our deficiencies. We finally have decent development, coaching, management, facilities .. which has lacked for the last decade.

Don't see any our our past mistakes as a negative, see them as a opportunity.
Top marks for positivity. Premium would be very proud. 👏

Interesting to see how Acres has been going- seems to play the same kind of game he always had, except for us, he had sh%t midfields to feed off, and if he was playing for us now it would be the same. We need a drastic midfield rebuild, otherwise we will just plod along I the foreseeable future.
Acres also had to start applying himself at an elite level consistently and I'm not talking about game day

Acres play a lot of footy on the wing for us. He was a very average footballer at our club. Maybe that was the coaching or maybe he's just one of those players that had to go to another club and get a kick in the arse for it to finally click for him?

Ones things for sure, he looks to work a hell of a lot harder now than he did in our clours. Busts his arse every week. He constantly just looked like he was cruising with us.
This is [emoji817] on the money. I don't think it clicked for him entirely at freo either.

I don’t think supporters still realize what an absolute farcical appointment Richo was. Refused to interview for the position, we gave him the job anyway, paid Port $50K for the privilege and then let “the development coach” deliver the worst development of young players that i have ever seen.
We will be still paying for the Richo cluster* for at least another 5 years.
There's alot of truth in this

Is it true Tim Membrey was forced to address the players prior to the Giants game by the afl? I heard yes and I heard it was terrible for all involved.
The afl making that a condition for saints picking Caminity?

St Kilda’s National Recruiting Manager = Chris Toce

= Tony "Trout" Elshaugh

After retiring from playing AFL football, Elshaug was a premiership playing coach at Dandenong (VFA) in 1991, then moved straight into a role as regional manager for the Eastern Ranges, in the newly established TAC Cup, which had only just replaced the former VFL/AFL Under 19s competition. After two years at Eastern, Elshaug became an assistant coach to Denis Pagan at the North Melbourne Football Club.[1] He was an assistant under Pagan for thirteen years, at North Melbourne from 1994 until 2002, and then at Carlton Football Club from 2003 until 2006. In 2007, he moved to the St Kilda Football Club.[2] Throughout his coaching career, he has been involved in developmental, senior assistant, and reserves gameday coaching roles. He resigned from his coaching in the middle of the 2010 season for personal reasons,[1] then returned to St Kilda as the recruiting manager in 2011.[3] He stepped down as the List Manager on 15 June 2018.

And on the infamous Petracca over McCartin decision by Elshaugh, Bain and Richo:

"If we go for the best player and we think Petracca is in front, we’re going to have to pay a million plus to get the forward we need. The market is saying that now. So let's get one in now and get him to fall in love with our footy club.

So yes they knew Petracca was the better player, but panicked that they may have to buy a in a FF later at the Franklin/Boyd contract levels. That and that Trout thought that Petracca had too big an ego!

That's not true he further elaborates and he says mccartin is the best player in the draft. They genuinely believed mccartin was the better prospect.

The list committee that handed down that decision consisted of Trout, Libba (his successor who was also shit), Finnis and Richardson.

It's quite clear none of them had a ****in clue when it came to football matters.

I don't think that's accurate he's been subbed off and subbed in.

How's his season gone? I'd say it's been very poor.

I think Ross is desperate to find guys who can play in the center and right now Clark is an option he's forced to take but ideally he wouldn't.

100% rolled gold BS I would say.

Acres took a long time to mature. I would watch him at training at Seaford and would dream during match sim. More than once I heard the coaches yell at him to wake up and get in position.
He would have that happen then a minute later would take a contested mark in the goal square.
I dare say if he was at the Saints he would be doing the Wood role just as well.

From what I've been told he was part of a core group at freo who started to do extras. Sought out their own fitness guy. Doing things like 100 x 100m ok Christmas morning.

I think it started to click for him on the work that's required.

Been told he took the trade out from us personally. But really took the freo offer as a kick in the guts. Was told they offered him a contract renewal of 150k per year.

So he left determined to prove everyone wrong.

That's a very different mentality to his time at the saints where he was handed 600k a year to build his craft in the VFL.

He played 19 games, was in the best 23 19 times, not too hard to see.
You asked why Lyon didn't have a spot for him. He did 19 times.
Season was only just. Like Steele compromised by injury. Not the point, Lyon saw value where many, including me on occasions, couldn't.

There is no way that's true. The AFL wouldn't pull a stunt like that when the mental health card is used.

The 95% TPP has a lot to answer for. Reckon kids get overpaid and take it a bit for granted.
We won on Wood, lost on Acres, good to see him going well.
