In reading the various articles about Ron Barassi in the past couple of days, I found this quote quite interesting:

Barassi’s recipe for transforming clubs became clear in *The Coach too.

“Any club worth its salt will clean out its no-hopers ... you’ve got to weed out people who breed an atmosphere of non-professionalism. They’re there for the bloody joke, for the social life, for the prestige. They are not there to win,” Barassi said.

*The Coach, John Powers’ seminal book on North Melbourne’s march to a flag under Barassi in 1977

Think this recipe remains relevant.

Barassi learned from his coach the legendary Norm Smith, who learned from his coach the legendary coach Frank ‘Checker’ Hughes, who was a devotee of the legendary coach John ‘Jack’ Worrall.

All of them coached multiple Premierships and had golden eras. Hughes with two clubs (Richmond and Melbourne) and Worrall at two clubs (Carlton and Essendon). All of them were “super coaches” of their times. All of them handed down the principles that Barassi learned and espoused.

The principles of team sport have been the same forever, the differences over time being the learnings, data and application.

Barassi also said that the saying that “practice makes perfect” was crap. Rather, he said “perfect practice makes perfect”. Natural ability is nothing to be respected, rather uncompromising effort is the only thing to be respected. Basic stuff. Honesty and integrity.

In simple terms, Barassi believed teams won’t succeed until they ruthlessly implement exemplary standards for people, skills, expectations and culture.

Among all of the coaches in the AFL, the one with a similar ruthless mindset to Barassi is our coach, Ross Lyon. He may not have the talent or resources of other clubs, but there is no doubting his intent and his transparency. That’s why we are now in good hands.

Just remember if we take Jordan we lose any compo we get for Gresh
Just read an SEN article that Jordon is on $500k.
Sounds a little steep? Or not, these days?

Possibly we wait to see if we lose Gresh before we sign JJ up, if we are actually looking at him?

Edit: For anyone having heart failure over this, I miss read it. Apologies. 😝

James Harmes is on $500k not Jordon.

Harmes is contracted for another year.

You’re correct. Skim read and inaccurately at that.🙄
Seemed a bit much.

If we aren’t getting Tomlinson, I wonder who else we might pick up to replace Howard in the event he goes.

Darcy Gardiner was one we looked at last year and might be gettable. Would prefer someone taller and stronger.

Holding onto Howard might be the sensible choice.

I'm hoping he can be a bit more Stuv like. He has a PODwith our other mids who are all a bit one paced. We looked so slow against GWS. Need to get some run and pace on ball.
I don't think it's rocket surgury with Dow. Out of the center it's get ball and boot it forward. Otherwise it's get ball and handpass to a team mate.
He has a monster boot on him, it's just about when to use it.

I remember someone saying that Kingsley wouldn't have taken the job if offered. He knew exactly what we were.
He seems a smart enough operator. Stayed with St.Kilda to learn how NOT to do things in a shitty set up, and then went to Richmond, surrounded by good coaches and a great system. He's well rounded, also helps he has a team of high end talent to execute his gameplay.
He timed his run well did Kingsley.
Every time you'd watch a game on TV and they'd film our coaches box Kingsley would be arguing with Richo.
So he knew enough to know that he was sitting next to an idiot.
That would have been good enough for me.
But I'm happier ending up with Ross again.

Anyone should be taking that giants list deep into the finals.

I thought it was that no one of any real potential wanted it, which is why Richardson didn't even have to interview for it.

Nah we were so hung up on Richardson because of his work as a development coach.

He was touted as the best in the league and bringing kids into the AFL and getting them up to speed with the top tier.

The thinking was that if he was given the whole list then they would all grow and learn together and the rebuild would be accelerated.

Unfortunately his game day tactics left plenty to be desired and, combined with our iffy recruiting, it all went nowhere pretty fast.

Yeah, I thought that was the spin brought out by the club after the fact (I agree with you though, the general consensus was that his development skills were very good)
He'd interviewed for the job before though, when we took on Watters - which was obviously a disaster - that was why he refused to interview again.
In any case it turned out to be yet another disaster.

He did have a squad that was poor at best and during his period in charge we never picked up any top line players except for Max King - his picks before have all been very average - McCartin failed , Hunter and Coffield are uncontracted and have not set the world on fire and the development of Long , Billings and Gresham would not make him look as a good developer of talent.
Richardson could of slash and burned the list when he got in , however it took the last year of him being coach where Lethlean came in and turned over the list the best he could and it basically took all of Rattens term as coach to get the squad adjusted to were we are now.

Ratten may well be not a very good coach but under his command we now have Nas , Owens ,Windhager , Sharman , Heath , Phillipou , Keller , Hotton and he brought the best out of Mason Wood and Sinclair, plus picked up Crouch and Higgins.

In all now we have got the list to a stage where we are looking at moving on players that were automatic selections before - guys like Billings , Gresham and Clark so it just shows how much our list has improved - of course it is far from finished be we are in a far better position now that we have been for a hell of a long time.

I CBF scrolling through the whole thread but can someone give me like a system out of 10 how likely all this stuff is

Gresh going
Clark going
Billings going
Coff going

Jordon in
Tomlinson in
Henry in
Gold Coast pick 4 in

Anything else I’ve missed?

That's my 'super not paying much attention and guessing which is probably as good as anyone else tbh' thoughts.

The only thing certain atm is Henry is a very good chance of playing for us next year because he nominated us.

And I would fully expect there be a few more than the 4 names you said could be going if we can move our first round draft pick higher.

He got a lot out of guys like Curren, Newnes, Shenton, Weller, Minchington.
Cant help thinking he'd have done better if someone had recruited some real players for him.

Obviously Melbourne still rate him in a coaching role.

Those who are SOS knockers - as noted above, he was list manager for the Giants and then list manager for the Blues. Responsible for putting together the nucleus of two current preliminary finalists. Can argue the toss of some drafting but he had recruiters working for him who had drafting as their specialty (as he does now at the Saints).
sorry but im a realist dealing with facts

steele treloar adams boyd(all but a norm smith medalist)bruce(club leading goalkicker)whe(gf player) recruited elsewhere

plowman marchbank palmer bugg sumner phillips jaesch wiley kennedy(almost a pass mark)to blues

clearly sos cannot spot talent

but ok lets hope and for those who believe in that other stuff pray that sos will come through for us,but please dont distort the facts ive layed out above,in fact i hope someone is watching sos very carefully & pointing out that 16 other clubs exist with players we should look at,because frankly his recruiting of giants to carlton was sheer clusterfxxx, when you look at who went elsewhere
