He's the only high pick outside McKercher that looks like what we need. If we trade up and don't get him I'm not sure there is much else of interest that we couldn't have picked up in the teens.

Shoemaker can play mid and we have a realistic chance of him being available?

No you keep drafting well instead. Pick up some outside talent on the cheap. Carlton traded in a level of players around the good players that they drafted and built okay.

Yes there's a risk he'll go to the Hawks but that will be weighed at the time.
I think the plan would be to get p4 and keep our current 1st, hence all the talk of salary dumps. If they can pull that off then well done on principle and take who you can get.

Not sure how we'd get that done but we'll see I guess.

This is the equivalent of grabbing Jack Martin for free.

Well it's absolutely not. It's like absorbing a huge amount of cap space to get some picks and bringing in two older guys for their retirements. More like Hanners but we get something out of it. Shiel has struggled to get on the park and coming with a foot issue.

Essendon get Gresham, a second round pick, Sheils salary off their books for a 4 pick down grade.

Not really reamed. However I do concede probably none of these scenarios will eventuate, especially Sheil for 13, that one is hilarious.

They are also having to pay more for Gresham than what he's worth to get us the first rounder in the first place.

That's not really worth moving your high first rounder down 4 spots.

I think if we could somehow manage to get that pick 13 we've done extremely well. No chance after that that Essendon would also downgrade their pick.

What have they done since the Lyon reset to erode trust?
Made the finals with the second worst injury list brought in Stocker and Caminiti who have been great pickups, played the kids all year, Pou will have 50 games before he is 20, Sharman our best forward in a final.
All positive.
SoS has not had one trading and draft period but some on here just continually s.hit on the club for all the eff ups from the last 15 years.
At least give them a chance this trade and draft period before crapping all over the club.
If they eff up, go for your life, everyone will be on the same page, but give them a chance please.

True, but they save at least 500k over 2 years being the difference between Sheil and what they pay Gres.

Really, Shiel is borderline untradeable. There is no sugar coating it, or talking it up.. Borderline untradeable.

Injured. No preseason until January at best. Pace is gone. Has an ongoing foot problem

Averages 13 games per year over the past three. (best run in 2021 of 19 games).

31 years old in March.

Two to three seasons left at best.

And the clincher.... Seven figure deal, or close to it with one year to run.

Stretch that out and really that's not even a third rounder. Unless he had four flags under his belt and had serious coaching aspirations.

He's cooked. Extremely limited value in adding this player to your list.

Is trading up five picks, from 13 to 8 worth a million dollars? Absolutely not.

Unless, a bigger picture comes into play.

Essington unquestionably trigger Band 1 compensation for Gresham, bringing in pick 13.

Pick 31 back for Shiel and Pick 8. We are buying that pick, and a speculative player, with known history however, for that seven figure salary. As awful as it sounds.

But I'll be arsed if trading a top 20 pick on an injured guy on the wrong side of the hill for a million dollars.

Leaves us with 8, 12 & 13 before further free agency compensation.

Surely, you would probably offer an extra year for Shiel, potentially with triggers for a third and smooth that money out. You never know. But it is still horrendous. At least Hannas had the decency to lower his coin.

That's pretty much the scenario right? I read through the last 80 pages to get here.
