Only got home to watch the last few minutes of that half, had a look at the stats.

17 disposals for Ah Chee, has he been playing midfield?

4 goals for Fullarton, on the lead/overhead marks/out the back?

How has Gardiner looked?
Ah Chee in defense. His goal came from a 50-meter penalty.
Fullarton can't recall but 1 was from a free.
Gardiner just working out the cobwebs. Looks fine so far but under no real pressure from the Bombers forwards.
A good game for him to start gaining some match fitness.

Haven't been watching but stats seem to suggest Arnold has been very good again?

Has been very good, wouldn't look out of place at AFL level. Defended well, taken some nice intercept marks (one grabbing them in slippery conditions) and been clean with his disposal. Reminds me of Harris Andrews, he rarely looks flustered.

Arnold has some really great dash too which is a bit of a point of difference for him. Is probably showing a little more than Joyce I think.

Remember when we wondered about how the standard of the NEAFL compared to the VFL? It has become evident that many of the VFL clubs are very, very average.
Brisbane and Southport were always going to be strong like they were in the NEAFL. Gold Coast has been assisted by a healthy list and extra list positions to have them on some week's name 22 AFL-listed player. Their AFL team also clearly focuses on the future and has some very experienced players running around in the seconds.

Let's not forget that Aspley were shithouse in their one season while Sydney and GWS have struggled. The swans especially are struggling hardcore. Most of the VFL's stand-alone teams have been shit for a long time while Williamstown continues to be pretty competitive.

So yes, the bottom teams of the VFL are very, very average but so are the bottom teams that came/would have come from the NEAFL. Both competitions did their job, develop AFL talent and it continues to do so.

Watching Arnold, Buzza and Joyce today, you would probably pick Arnold as your third tall for the firsts, if he was available of course. Mobile and does plenty of work in contested situations.

you would think Ah Chee would get a run as the sub (at least) in the firsts this week.
So Arnold in for Lester and Fullerton in for Gunstan?

State league affiliate: Brisbane (VFL)
This weekend: Brisbane v Essendon at Brighton Homes Arena, Sunday May 14, 12.05pm AEST

MATCH CENTRE Check out all the stats from Brisbane's clash

Key forward Tom Fullarton kicked six goals in the Lions’ 68-point thrashing of Essendon on Sunday.

Veteran on-baller Jarryd Lyons also hit the scoreboard with two goals among game-high numbers of disposals (34), tackles (six) and clearances (eight).

Still yet to sign a contract extension, Kai Lohmann kicked three goals.

Callum Ah Chee and Rhys Mathieson mirrored each other’s stats with 28 disposals and one goal, with Deven Robertson (27 disposals, one goal) just short of making it a threesome.

With an incredibly healthy AFL side, Brisbane had 20 senior or rookie-listed players in action.

Father-son draftee Jaspa Fletcher was strong with 18 touches, while fellow son of a gun rookie Darryl McDowell-White got the ball 14 times.

Jaxon Prior (22 disposals, seven marks), Nakia Cockatoo (16, five) and Darragh Joyce (13, 10) were busy, as were James Madden (19 touches), James Tunstill (15) and Noah Answerth (14).

Darcy Fort (16 disposals) didn't dominate the hitouts but made up for it with seven clearances.

Darcy Gardiner found the ball 17 times, Blake Coleman and rookie Shadeau Brain each kicked a goal, while Henry Smith (nine disposals) and rookie ruckman Kalin Lane (seven) were relatively quiet.

So Arnold in for Lester and Fullerton in for Gunstan?
Fullerton for Gunston. Give the guy an AFL game when his confidence is sky high in a position he has made his own in the VFL. Could really make something out of it and the downside (dropping/resting) Gunston is not a great risk.

I am not touching the other suggestion. Even though it it is purely theoretical.

Thanks for the reply. I suppose the AFL teams are also just some key injuries away from being uncompetitive. Sydney used to very competitive in the NEAFL but I suppose there is not enough talent to share with the Giants.

I was just surprised how well the Lions have gone and on the average I think the games have been more competitive. Especially compared to our last year in the NEAFL when we won nearly every game including the GF by over 10 goals.

Tom Fullarton will attract some attention from clubs who need a second/third tall with a bit of athleticism. He is young enough to have more development ahead, seems to be getting some good strength and bulk about him and gets better at reading the play. He might fit very well into the Gunston/Hipwood role if needed. He also can pinch hit in the ruck adequately enough up forward I think.

I agree, I think the alignment has been fantastic for the Lions, and the other AFL-aligned clubs. Even if some matches lack competitiveness the advanced interstate travel that the 'new era' VFL has bought in is invaluable experience, especially for the Victorian-based clubs where the only way to give players interstate experience was to list unready players as emergencies for interstate games. A full range of competitiveness, introduced by a full range of teams in different circumstances, also assists in getting AFL players ready for all scenarios whether it be smashing teams by 68 (vs Essendon) or close matches (vs Werribee)
