Play Nice 2024 AFL and State League Attendance

Time for the Tassie govt to stop wasting money on these not wanted games and put it towards the new Tasmanian team.

100 per cent. With the better stadium returns and a much larger Hawthorn floor (yesterday would have drawn 32k to 35k at Docklands), it doesn't do Tasmania or Hawthorn members any good.

The only winners are the Hawthorn club admin (who don't need to chase another major partner) and the AFL, which dangles the carrot for a better stadium.

It will be interesting to see what Hawthorn vs. Brisbane draws at Docklands, given the club will probably get a 6-5 MCG / Docklands agreement post-Tasmania (assuming Essendon and Carlton take an extra MCG game).

If not for Kennett railroading the AFL and North (in 2010) and coming back (in 2018) when there were rumours the Hawks would leave, Hawthorn would have already gone over a decade ago.

There has been no fan or member development in the Apple Isle since at least 2010 - if anything, crowds and proportion of total membership have gone backward at a rate of knots.

Ultimately the club squandering a golden opportunity to secure a much better stadium deal in Melbourne back in 2009/10. Now, when the current deal ends they will be in a dog fight to keep the 6 games…can anyone realistically seeing the Hawks getting the 7th game back?

Hawthorn seem to be stuck at about 8-9,000 supporters for their games in Launceston. There's been a big decline in neutral attendance so that requires opposition supporters. St Kilda probably brought along 5,000 supporters so that's why it was 15,000. GWS and Fremantle will bring no supporters so we will see crowds of < 10,000 again. And North Melbourne has very poor support in Launceston for a Victorian club and won't bring any neutrals being as terrible as they are, so this game will be about 10-11,000.

Peak Launceston crowds were in 2007-11. Since then there has been a rapid decline - ‘membership’ last year was actually lower than 2009 despite the club boasting 30,000 more total members.

At least Hawthorn has given up on the facade that the Tasmanian sponsorship is about fan development - which was always extremely flimsy

I agree with you. If only you had Ian Dicker hang around a bit longer to ensure his big club strategy was maintained.

Dicker saw Essendon’s 1990’s 2000’s success and wanted the same for the reborn Hawks. Big club, national following, big crowds, big membership. That means MCG…. Then, it did Tassie and imo stuffed it. Yes, it’s a financial powerhouse but it would’ve been at the G with capitalising on 3 flags.

What an opportunity squandered. I know Bkues / Bombers expect one extra homer at the G from next year. Essendon want a further two homers in the subsequent years, assuming linked to Hawks and Roos Tassie exit. It will be worth a seat of admission to see the ‘fight’ unfold.

A reawakening Essendon joining a resurgent Carlton timing wise not ideal for the Hawks. But as you say, I’m sure they will land in a good place.

37,433 at Marvel today. Good Mothers Day crowd.
Pies got around 38k last year on Mothers Day against the Giants at the G in Su day twilight. Might be worthwhile using them in one of the mothers day games going forward.

Interesting they put Collingwood on a lot, you'd think they'd chuck a Bulldogs - Eagles or Saints - Freo on.

North will be returning games to Marvel. That will cover any ESS/Carl games that move to the MCG. No need for Hawks to play five games there. Even though we play better there.

Next week looks like it should be a good week for crowds, probably besides St Kilda vs Freo.
Suns vs Cats in Darwin is selling much better than the North game this week.
SCG should sell out Friday.
After getting 65k against them last year I'm interested to see what Collingwood draw vs Adelaide on the Saturday arvo.
Essendon should sell their game at Marvel out.
GWS vs WB is an interesting one. The wind has come out of the Giants' sails the last couple weeks, but their first Sydney home game since March so really hoping for an okay showing.

Pies V Crows is in that early Sat Arvo slot which generally isnt as friendly as the 4:35 slot.

The pies v crows game will draw between 67-70,000 people. Collingwood will draw there 65,000 supporters just depends on how many crows fans make the trip
These type of MCG games, in terrific time slots are now drawing in significant numbers of neutral footy fans wanting to see good games. The MCC and AFL members are becoming increasingly filled with these fans. The recent Cats / Blues game was a case in point. It probably had 8-10k of neutrals wanting to see a top 4 possible GF rehearsal at a time when footy is trending really strongly and the quality of games (tight margins) is as good as ever.

The Saturday 4.20 and Sunday 3.20 slots are also the best for a neutral, too.

It's a lot of dedication to get home at 11.30pm after a day of work on Thursday, Friday and the earlier bouncedowns mean you have to be out the house before lunchtime. you're willing to do those things if it's your own team but bugger doing it regularly for neutral matches that could potentially blowout.

It's already been sorted but wonder how the broadcast deal would have worked with these two timeslots becoming so popular. obviously 3.20 is built for 7 running a game into the news, but you now have about five preferred 'blockbuster' slots now.
