Thought it was time to get this thread rolling for the year, especially as we can kick it off with this news

Congrats to Dempsey - I know this is fan voted, but still great recognition for his season

As we get more info about nominations, squads, winners etc, we'll flood this thread

Congrats to Dempsey

I also see they use players in the incorrect positions like AA selections
And no love for Humphries or COS ☹️

And rightly so
Everyone of those players in the backline is superior to our boys

The 22-Under-22 is purely a fan vote - so it's not necessarily about who's had the better season as it is about who's more popular

Just like we see with the AA team, they'll slot midfielders into roles they don't normally play, will ignore those who genuinely play on the wing but at least the AA select 2 KPD options for team - here it's Mac Andrews surrounded by medium & small defenders

I’m just happy it’s a team of star players who would make it if it was legit.
The fan have spoken and I agree and commend them

I only see one player.
JHF.

Darcy does ruck and none others were selected so that's by default.
All the rest are in reasonable positions.

It is, but I have to say, the inclusion of a number of players at poorly-supported (i.e. expansion) clubs infers to me that it's reasonably serious.

Award Season -

All Australian Selections - I think we will see 3 Cats in the team. Cameron, Smith and Holmes.

Cameron is the one certainty, Smith and Holmes should both be in their also. Both are top 10 in the Coaches votes and most likely the Brownlow voting as well.

Dempsey should be in discussions for the top 40 selections, but his form has tailed off a bit in the second have of the year..

I can see both Smith and Holmes getting mid 20 brownlow votes each. I cant see too many others taking votes off them. Cameron will get his fair share, mid to high teens, and Danger will grab some early. But besides that, no one else really stands out.. Miers will probably be our 5th highest vote getter.

Absolutely agree with you. If one of the Dash Brothers misses out, it'll probably be Holmes.

I think Miers might be ever so slightly in front of Dempsey for selection, Ollie doesn't quite win enough footy to win a blazer yet.

Miers name 'should' be thrown up for top 40 selection. I don't think he will get in there, but he has been super.
As a forward, he doesn't kick enough goals (lower assists this year also) and as a mid, doesn't get as much of the ball as others.
Damage per possession - I doubt there are too many better than him though.

Actually, a couple of other names that should be discussed in top 40 talks -

Z Guthrie - Another great year.
Mannagh - Gets a lot of the footy for a forward, kicks plenty of goals and is a tackling machine. Some of his vision and kicking off the outside of the boot is sublime.

I don't think they will make the list, but should be in discussions.

Yeah, I was thinking Zuthrie as well. He reminds me a bit of Ben Hart.

Stranger selections have happened.
Shane Edwards very similar player in 2018 made the team on the bench
This is how his 2018 season compares to Miers current one
Add in the fact Miers is rated the #1 general forward in the AFL

Shane Edwards

24 Games includes 2 finals though

462 disposals

14 goals 8

68 tackles

85 I50

31 goal assists

Gryan Miers

20 games

446 disposals

13 goals 12

64 tackles

72 I50

15 goal assists

It's a decent comparison and Miers positional role is quite similar to Edwards, albeit he is a more silky version, whereas Edwards had a lot of grunt. To be a chance he'd need goal assist numbers to be closer to 2018 Edwards though I'd say.

Unfortunately the wider public still see Miers as a forward only, then look at his stats sheet and see goal/goal assist numbers more like a midfielder, so effectively rule him out on that basis. In reality he actually is used more like an attacking midfielder/wingman - you could almost say like peak Mitch Duncan. I can see him being similarly unlucky All Australian-wise, despite being a top 4 side's best ball user and one of their best players for a very long time.

Has Bailey just about wrapped up the Coaches award? Would think he'd poll 18-20 votes over the past two games.

Rowell and Anderson had the advantage of a game in hand, but Gold Coast losing the past two heavily negates that. Also don't see Dawson and Daicos polling as much the past fortnight.

Also reckon he's a red hot chance to win the Brownlow, despite missing a few games. Votes won't go Miers, Atkins and the like, and I think he'll pip Daicos. First time since 2017 I'll have a keen interest in the count.

Agree on all fronts. As I posted on the main board:

"Smith finished the season with a strong last 5 games.

NM: 43 disposals, 13 clearances, 8 score involvements, 1 goal
PA: 30 disposals, 8 clearances, 10 score involvements, 1 goal assist
Essendon: 31 disposals, 9 clearances, 8 score involvements, 3 goal assists
Sydney: 30 disposals, 5 clearances, 9 score involvements
Richmond: 34 disposals, 7 clearances, 10 score involvements, 2 goal assists

There's a reasonable chance he's on 36-41 coaches votes from that run. If the umpires are on the same page, it could be 12 Brownlow votes or so."

We know that Dangerfield's early hot streak and Jezzas's big bags in the back half of the year will take some attention away. Holmes will regularly steal votes in midfield, while Miers likely starts popping up once he enters the midfield rotations.

Really the main thing favouring Daicos is his lack of competition for votes, especially in midfield. Old veterans just never poll that well, even when their performance levels remain high. We saw it with Dangerfield, Selwood and other veterans in their last midfield years. So really Daicos shouldn't have to worry about Pendlebury, Sidebottom or Crisp taking too many - even if Sidey did start the year unbelievably well.

I honestly do not think Daicos has been a top 5 player in the league this season as far as consistent impact and hurt factor with disposal. Reputation alone will give him 20% more votes than he deserves. And that will probably be enough to seal it.

Agree with you about the Coaches Award. I reckon he's going to either win or finish second behind Anderson (who was Gold Coast's best against GWS and could sneak a few votes).

Completely disagree about the Brownlow though, I don't think he's any chance. Naicos is going to win the Brownlow by a mile, probably with an absurdly high vote tally too. I'm talking 35+. It's a joke becauseis Naicos hasn't been anywhere near the best player in the comp this year, but it is what it is. I just find it annoying that he's going to get such a big accolade before he actually deserves it.

The only glimmer of hope we have with Daicos is that he's been better when Collingwood have been worse i.e getting less votes overall. That hurts his run home more than if they'd finished with a 10 game winning streak.

Still, I agree that he will probably win it. Sidebottom steals votes for the first 7 or so games, and then it's really only forwards and defenders who never poll that well in the Brownlow. Meaning all attention goes to Daicos, and Collingwood still won many games.

First portion of the season Pies 3 votes for a fair few games should go to Sidebottom and Pendles they were amazing but Naicos will get them.

The he had a period of games in which he was tagged pretty well including by us but will somehow still get lots of votes.

The he started to have really good form but Pies were losing will still get lots of votes somehow.

I will be pleasantly surprised if anyone is within 5 votes of him at the end.

Smith polling coaches votes 15 times gives us a sliver of hope, given a number of them were clear BOG performances. I also have a feeling the umpires will be harsh on Holmes, while they always ignore Atkins.
