No one could foresee Carlton getting smashed with injuries and falling off a cliff.
I had Carlton missing the 8 at the start of the season. They're just such an unreliable club with very poor list depth.

GC traded us Liam Ryan, Oscar Allen, Jack Petruccelle and a future second round pick for our 2018 first rounder, then had to sit and watch us win the flag.

The fan would have been absolutely ropable.

Yeah I was thinking the same as well.

Ended up being Suns sent Picks 21, 26, 37 in 2017 and 2018 (second round pick; 20) for Eagles pick 50 in 2017 and 2018 (first round; 18).

In essence, we dropped 2 spots in the 2018 draft and swapped pick 50 for 21, 26 and 37...

Ouch, even without considering who was picked up that would have been one of the worst death rides ever.

Me too. In fact a lot of people 'round these parts found it unusual for the club to be backing in Carlton's improvement over Hawks before the start of the season.

Oh well, just another bad decision to add to the pile of bad decisions we've made over the years. Maybe one day we'll stop trying to be "too clever" and make the obvious choice when its presented to us.

Honestly I think I have a personality disorder or something, mates and family want me to get tested, they think I have ASPD or NPD

Nipple Pinching Disorder?

Classic sado-masochistic behaviour!

Hawks basically a lock for finals and who knows where they could end up with Mitchell at the helm and the umpires in their pockets?

Not having a god at you but a reminder there was like an 80/20 split on this board that wanted the Hawks pick over Carlton’s at the time, with the prevailing feeling they’d be very close but the Hawks had less wiggle room if they got dealt a rough injury hand.

Don’t know about too clever, when it was essentially line ball.

From memory it was a bit of a coin toss.

Hawks looked like they'd pulled one fluke season out of their ass and were going to struggle being "found out.." by everyone the following year and with a much harder draw..

Meanwhile Carlton looked like they were on the up somewhat and had been building a bit more steadily?

I think I wanted Carlton's because they have always been a much bigger disappointment for their fans constantly... So more likely to wet the bed.

Yes, we lost the coin toss.

Plenty on here (and other parts of BigFooty) thought the Hawks were lucky with a soft draw and charmed injury run in 2024.

In the end we should still derive satisfaction from Collingwood stumbling out of the top 4.

Man Collingwood were poor. Hawks were good but they were good last week and Adelaide responded. Collingwood offered nothing. Hard to fathom watching that game that Moore and Houston were both named on the AA half back line in 2023. They were awful.

I wanted the Blues picks, but the risk of Hawthorn was really them making a jump into the top 6 then falling into the bottom 6. As it stands they will probably be 7th at the end of the round which is about fair. Hopefully they are a losing Elimination Finalist and officially finish 7th or 8th.

I can't believe we chose Tim Kelly over Carlton's draft picks.

The games that matter :

Today:
GWS v North Melbourne (Canberra)
Melbourne v Bulldogs (MCG)

R23:
Fremantle v Brisbane (Optus)
Gold Coast v GWS (Gold Coast)
Bulldogs v West Coast (Marvel)

R24:
GWS v St Kilda (Showgrounds)
Bulldogs v Fremantle (Marvel)
Brisbane v Hawthorn (Gabba)

Assumes Hawthorn defeat Melbourne next week and if they do, there’s no margin for error- all those results have to be won by the bolded team for Hawthorn to finish 9th

Car’n the Dees

Results of the other matches don’t impact Hawthorn finishing 9th although Collingwood losing to both Adelaide and Melbourne could see them fall behind Hawthorn on %. Likewise the Suns could do the same if they lose to Port (in Adelaide) or Essendon at home but they need to win at least one of those games

I think GWS are the most important team now. Possibly the most likely to miss. If they can win all 3 of NM/GC(away)/SK, it will keep pressure on a lot of teams.

Hurts to think we could have had 3 top 10 picks (incl.OA compo) if we chose Carlton's picks.
Would've been a massive help to us during a rebuild.
Tougher draw for Hawthorn and random injuries makes no difference when you're pitting them vs a middling team like Carlton.
Was clearly a bad decision then and it's been easily proven to be one.
It's incredible for anyone to not see it and instead be wishing that last season was a one off for Hawthorn.

If Hawthorn were sure they'd finish above Carlton they wouldn't have offered us Carlton's picks as an option.

You're forgetting that we have no agency in this.

If we'd picked Carlton they would have won the flag. It's just the way things have been going for us.
