This thread is becoming increasingly popular, and to keep some sort of order, we will have some….

Rules of engagement:

1. Bring valid news or links to Twitter posts from notable sources. Don’t post screenshots or “some bloke just said on SEN” or what some “trade whisperer” has posted on a Facebook page.

2. Ignore what other team boards are putting up as trade offers. Don’t quote or bring them here either.

3. Don’t post “buckle up” for the lols.

4. If you can’t say anything nice about Worpel or CJ, don’t say anything at all. The continued slaps and backhanders are just going to be deleted.

They actually want 3 first rounders.
That will be their ambit claim. Melbourne will probably want the same for Petracca. Both clubs will play hardball. Probably something around 2 first round picks and some side deals should get it done. I don't think we get or need both. IMO I'd prefer Petracca. I'd back the Hawthorn coaching and conditioning staff to get him playing his best football which is dynamic.

Honestly a pretty shitty attitude towards the one bloke who actually tried for them all these years. He held his end of the collective bargain.

Worpel leaving will hopefully get us an end of first round compensation pick.

If we did go after Merrett & Petracca I think Cam Mackenzie will push for a move to StKilda which will net us pick 7.

So we could have picks 7, 8, 26 and end of first round compensation for losing Worpel.

With those picks we could potentially get both of Merrett & Petracca without moving next years first.

Pick 7 + Worpel pick for Merrett
Pick 8 and 26 for Petracca
Bombers will want picks next year & most likely players as they do have interest in Hust, Reeves & Serong

Dangerfield for one, and Cameron?
I don't think a free agency deal was even submitted for Dangerfield. Geelong chose to trade so they could get away with paying Danger less (and giving him half of Mogg's Creek on the side). Cameron was probably similar although I don't know the details.

But Geelong make these conscious decisions to manage their salary cap. Adelaide and GWS still got near enough to what they would have received through compensation.

A free agency probably wasn’t submitted, because they knew it would be matched, so a trade was done.
Either way semantics.

No one has matched a RFA offer yet have they?
I guarantee Port will, and don’t blame them. I wouldn’t be accepting one first round pick for him, which could end up around 20. We got screwed with the compo for Buddy and it still shits me. That’s why they won’t let him go this year, as they know they are going to match any offer next year, and it gives them time to convince him to stay.

Love to see us grab Petracca and hold onto our 1st rd pick given his huge contract…

Feel Petracca helps in the short term but holding the 1st allows us to grab a player like Grlj or Greaves to ensure the midfield issues are addressed into the future

Merrett, Butters, Walsh end up staying put + the asking price will be way too high IMO…

If we want Merrett or Petracca we will have to accept that the level of humiliation for those two pathetic clubs is such that they will not let them leave while contracted unless they can sell themselves as having had a ‘win’ in the trade. They are each obsessed with those players and the idea of them leaving for Hawthorn will be very hard for them and their fans to process. Expect irrational and unreasonable approaches

It is not really semantics.

Free Agency usually requires that clubs make stupid offers. TDK is a good example - Carlton would not even consider matching that. Buddy offer was the same. Hawthorn will be reluctant to match Worpel because of the length of deal or whatever. Carlton would not match Slivangi because it is a stupid offer.

Geelong do it differently. They want the free agent, but they don't want to pay big money and mess up their salary cap. So Geelong choose to trade.

They used the whole loot they got from West Coast (Tim Kelly) to trade for Cameron. Geelong gave up a player, pick 9 and pick 28 for Danger. Adelaide would not have got that much in free agency compensation - Adelaide finished 7th that year. Geelong gave GWS three first round picks for Cameron.

So Geelong manufacture it so that the club they are trading with get more, and the impact on Geelong's salary cap is much less. It is a win win and by-passes free agency.

Pill, been thinking about this post.

Is Bodie an understudy for Hardwick? With Seamus and McDonald, makes me think Bodie is more like Sicily on the list. But so is Serong, but surely he goes…? Seamus might want to go as well. Maybe list changes slightly go in Bodie’s favour?

Not trying to convince you otherwise, just interested if the club sees him as as a third tall or small? What did they originally hope…? Am I reading it right?

It’s good they are giving him a go elsewhere but not everyone is versatile. The first goal he kicked was right in front of me, self assured from the get go, tight angle, windy.

Didn’t he beat Harley, that got him drafted.

Not sure I don’t know the in’s and outs of what the Hawks liked I am only hearing what I heard about a month ago no update’s since sorry.
Hopefully he has had some good news!

I think it may depend on what happens with Seamus, Serong,Huss, Blanck,Noodle and Co?

I just hope we do not give up too much for players that are turning 30 years old and I hope we have learned from our passed mistakes with Mitchell, O’Meara (I loved him as a bloke but we gave up a lot together him) Patton, Vickery and Scully.
I hope we are more keeping an eye on The Geelong model more even though I hate mentioning that club!

Agree on that point with Merrett given he is captain and just about their only gun player…

I believe the situation is different with Petracca - a few Melbourne people I’ve spoken to believe he has checked out and he and/or Oliver need to be traded as part of a mini rebuild… feel we could get a bargain if we handle the scenario the right way and especially if we take on his full contract at 1m+ over 4 seasons…

I’m thinking that Trac will get done first. We have a current top 10 pick, which should help Melbourne seeing they don’t have a first this year.

A Petracca and Merrett in the hand is worth more than a Butters in the bush.

Plus a Butters in the hand might melt.

I don't know a trac in the bush has some merit for sure...

but the rich smooth consistency of Butters in our midfield just imagine the melts

I'll see myself out

I need to clarify, it was Peter Griffin with the mystery box.

I think I posted on this a while ago...went searching Google for "Homer Simpson mystery box"...found nothing, funnily enough. I think the Monty Burns mystery box hing conflated a few of our memories...

If we get Merrett and Petracca hard to see Worpel and Mackenzie staying. Day Newk Nash Merrett Ward Petracca with Butler Moore Watson CMac chopping out, it’s hard to see him figuring.
Merrett to me is likely to take a first, second and a player for them to let him go. Petracca if we take on his salary is just a first. If we could get saints pick 7 for Mackenzie, then something like

Merrett and f3 for pick 8, f2 and Reeves.
Petracca on full salary for pick 7.

If Worpel compo is band 2, trade that end of first and 26 for suns first pick 14 and draft someone like Philippou or Barker.

Out Worpel Mackenzie Reeves picks 8/26/f2
In Merrett Petracca pick 14 scum f3

Still take a first rounder and essentially hold our 2026 picks subbing our f2 for scum f3.

How many years contract wise are we going to have to give a 30 year old Merrett in order to entice him to make a move?
I would think at least a 4 year deal would be sufficient but the way clubs have been dishing out long term contracts lately I wouldn't be suprised to see a five or six year deal offered.

I'd like to think our medical and fitness folk will have input into that decision.

Q. Do players have medicals before or after the length of contract has been agreed with the club seeking to trade them in?
